Andrew Carpenter’s days in the Phillies system have come to an end, as he was claimed today by the San Diego Padres. Carpenter, 26, was the Phillies 2nd round draft choice in 2006 out of Long Beach State. After rising through the Minors as a starter, and often a successful one, Carpenter was converted to the bullpen this year in Lehigh Valley and had a very good year, going 5-1 with a 1.79 ERA in 34 games, to go along with a WHIP below 1 (0.98). In 60.1 innings, he walked just 11 and struck out 65.
Carpenter spent time with the Phils during parts of the last four seasons and was very inconsistent on each occasion he was brought up.
New scenery, maybe new beginnings. Good luck to him with the Padres.

I didn’t even see an article that he was DFA’d. I can’t find a story about how they plan on using his spot on the 40 man roster… I suppose they will announce a corresponding move soon? Such as Erik Kratz called up?

I wouldnt expect anything until the IronPigs season finishes up. Obviously no pressing need in Philly….unless an injury

They also need to clear a spot for Blanton who they are going to activate from the 60 DL, He will pitch a few warm ups and start a game on the 15th. Besides have to waste someone to add Moss as a pitch hitter. Mathieson or Mr. Z. Or maybe both if they to add Aumoute now as opposed to later.

I liked him but he was probably never going to have a good career in Philadelphia. Good luck to him in San Diego. Hopefully now he actually gets a chance to pitch in the majors for good.

Yeah, no spot or plan for him here. Good luck, Drew, against all but us. Would not surprise me to see him as a middle reliever in majors for a few years with moderate success. Many guys of his type will do that if given enough opportunity to get comfortable. Most don’t get the time to do that.

Good. Good for Carpenter to get a chance in a low pressure environment, and good for the Phillies to clear another spot on the 40 man roster, that was not going to help them.

He was claimed off of waivers but I don’t see anywhere that says what type of waivers he was on. If it was revokable waivers, the Phillies can pull him back, otherwise, I wish him the best of luck in SD.

Wasn’t going to be used if he was called up, wasn’t going to get innings in AAA the last with so many pen arms, wasn’t going to have a fighting chance at the bullpen in PHI in 2011. Good luck to him.

I don’t really like this move at all. Even if he was nothing more than Clay Condrey 2.0, there’s still value in a 7/8th bullpen guy.

Well, the bright side of this move is that the Phils still have players in the minor league system that other teams think is more value than their own 40 man roster. Our system can’t be that depleted if that’s the case.

That can’t get any outs?

There is value in a 7th/8th inning guy, but Carpenter wasn’t a 7th/8th inning guy. He was a mop up guy at best.

No loss there. He wasn’t very good.

And even if he was, there’s no room for and there’s not going to be room for him at any time in the foreseeable future.

I never want someone to leave Philly and do good but I think Drew has a chance to be a solid bullpen arm. Maybe even an 8th inning type guy.

He’s a California guy, and his parents live out there. Sounds like a win for him on multiple levels. Good luck Drew!!

Speculation is that Carpenter was DFA to open a spot for Aaron Rowand.

I think he can be a Chad Durbinesque reliever. Pitching in that enormous park should help him too if he gets a shot in the majors. Good luck to him.

I’m hoping with the ball park and the situation out there, he can just throw strikes and let them hit his stuff. It seemed to me that every time he got called up he would pitch away from the bat.

Drew had said that pitching nearly every day helped him be more effective. That wasn’t going to happen here . Maybe he can find a spot out west. Good luck

Drew was a Ed Wade draft pick so I’m surprised too but I wish him success in the majors.

I remember the days when no one claimed any of our pitchers. Good luck Drew.

I wish him well. This probably isn’t his last stop. Padres have room to add to 40 man roster now. He is probably a Minor League free agent next year. Lots of guys like him can catch on if he develops. Great 2007…good 2009…great 2011….in no pressure. Either he is a AAAA guy or he is a number 4 next year on a bad team. Not a reliever. Kendrick with better stuff but not as much desire.

Not as much deisre? And you know this how?

Well since there’s 5 spots in a rotation, he doesn’t have to be a number 4 or a AAAA guy. But why would you expect him to go back to starting when he’s been so much better as a reliever?

Kendrick without as much luck.

It’s not being unlucky when you fall behind every hitter and throw pitches right down the middle every time. He’s Kyle Kendrick without the good sinker and about the same level of a change up.

There is no chance of him having any real success in the majors. He has AAA stuff and always will. He has no out pitch and just doesn’t locate well enough.

Putting my poke in here: Carpenter’s being drafted so high was an error by the scouting/coaching guys. My fear is that Buchanen fits the Carpenter mold. Hope he’s better than that.

Buchanan wasn’t drafted that high. Whatever you get from a guy like that is a bonus.

You make it sound like every Phillies high draft pick will pan out. Teams make mistakes all the time. The MLB draft is a massive crap shoot. You win some, you lose some.

Carpenter had his chances, the Phillies have better options in the minors like Schwimer, De Fratus, and Aumont. He needed a change of scenery, and there’s no better place than Petco for a pitcher.

I wonder why Carpenter was waived and Drew Naylor is still on the 40-man roster?I agree with the Padres that he may be able to pitch well in the major leagues. I count 39 on the roster now, which makes room for Blanton, should he recover enough to pitch in September, or for Edell, Feierabend, or Savery if they decide they want another lefty in the bullpen instead of Zagurski or Perez. Naylor could be added to the 60-day DL list at any time, but I guess the Phillies are waiting to give them roster flexibility to add somebody during the playoffs.
The only pitcher I want called up in September is Schwimer. I could see Schwimer being more useful in the bullpen in the playoffs than Lidge, if he doesn’t show he can control his fastball, or than Blanton, if cannot show he is healthy, or than Worley, who has said he is more comfortable as a starter than as a reliever. I see Oswalt as the obvious 4th starter in the playoffs and optimistically expect Blanton to be good in the bullpen. I think the long-man will and should remain Kendrick, but I could see Blanton, Schwimer, or Worley in that role. I’d prefer to keep Worley strictly a starter. I’d keep him off the playoff roster, stretched out, I guess in Clearwater, and ready to start in case of an injury to a starter. I think Aumont or DeFratus might replace Schwimer in his scenario, but although I wouldn’t mind seeing them called up, I’d wait until next year before giving them important innings.

Naylor is on the roster because of his status as a 60 day DL candidate. His presence on the 40 man gives the Phillies more flexibility for the playoff rosters. He can be replaced by anyone. Carpenter could not be replaced by anyone.

I don’t think he can go on the DL without being called up to the majors. Same with Garcia. Naylor probably would not be claimed now, so I assume he can be outrighted if needed.

I don’t think either one of them can be outrighted if they are injured. My guess (and it is only a guess) is that this would violate some sort of labor law somewhere.

Schwimer was called up today with KK on paternity leave. The Naylor thing is purely to open up a spot for the playoffs, I think he is gone in the off season to make room for Rule V guys.

I love how certain people can’t let others speak well of a player without sh*tting all over that player in response. Who says you’re an expert?
I always though Carpenter was one of those guys who didn’t get much of a chance. Bad timing, not-so-great performance in the very few and far between times he did get called up and even fewer times he actually got a chance to pitch. I wish him all the luck in the world in San Diego.
