BA’s Top 20’s: FSL and Eastern League

Sorry, I’ve been kind of tied up with other things (and the Phillies), so I didn’t get a chance to update this in real time. BA posted its FSL Top 20 and EL Top 20’s this week. The Phillies on the list:

FSL

9. Trevor May, RHP

EL

1. Domonic Brown, OF

So far, to date

GCL (2): Biddle and Altherr
NYPL (3): Hernandez, Santana, Altherr
SAL (5): Singleton, Colvin, Cosart, May, Valle
FSL (1): May
EL (1): Brown

I expect Brown will make the International League Top 20 as well. That’s probably it. Not a bad run. Per usual, the bulk of the Phillies best guys are in the lower levels. Discuss.

  1. So the list above pretty much contains ten (10) of the top 20 prospects. It will be interesting to see who the readers think make up the other 10 players in the top 20.

    My list:

    James
    De Fratus
    Dugan
    Alvarez
    Garcia
    Aumont
    Ramirez
    Gillies
    Castro
    Worley
    … in some order.

  2. DeFratus came up big today to pick up a save against Venezuela in the second round of the the Pam Am Qualifier. He came in with the bases loaded and no one out in the bottom of the 12th to face the tying run at the plate and protecting a 6-2 lead. He pitched out by keeping the ball in the infield. He retired all the three batters he faced. He allowed only one inherited run to score on a fielders choice for a 6-3 win. Team USA remains undefeated 7-0 in the tournament. Earlier Aumont helped keep Team Canada alive in the tournament with a win against Panama by pitching 5 shutout innings. He has pitched ten innings giving up one run to go with 11 strikeouts in two starts.

  3. The Aumont performances in this tourny definitely give some hope for 2011. Julio Rodriguez is probably either pitching today(against Cuba) or tomorrow(against Canada) for Puerto Rico. He’s Puerto Rico’s #1 pitcher and has already thrown 2 very good games in the tournament.
    11 IP, 5H, 1BB, 1R, 1ER, 13K (2 starts, 2 wins)

  4. Kissock is also playing for Canada. He’s given up 6 hits and 2 ER in his 2 appearances. Aumont, JRod and DeFratus have been very, very good. I’m a little concerned that Justin doesn’t have a K yet. He could have used 1 (or 3) yesterday getting out of the bases loaded jam.

  5. Just checked and De Fratus has 3 k’s in 4.1 innings so far. The stats are hard to follow because they aren’t lined up right. Just thought of something. How was JDF left off the FSL Top 20?

  6. Scooterman, I think DeFratus was simply squeezed out by better candidates. It’s hard for a pure reliever to make a top prospect list. Looking at the FSL list I see Diego Moreno and Jhan Marinez who both had ridiculous numbers. How on earth do you argue DeFratus over the guy who struck out 15 per nine! What I’m saying is that DeFratus is good, but it’s a big world.

  7. That gives us ten top prospects to work with on these lists. Using only these ten, how does that stack up?

    1. Domonic Brown
    2. Jon Singleton
    3. Brody Colvin
    4. Jarred Cosart
    5. Trevor May
    6. Sebastian Valle
    7. Cesar Hernandez
    8. Jesse Biddle
    9. Domingo Santana
    10. Aaron Altherr

Mike77 asked about the second ten. I’ll just place these ones in alphabetical order.

    Phillippe Aumont
    Leandro Castro
    Justin DeFratus
    Kelly Dugan
    Harold Garcia
    Tyson Gillies
    Jiwan James
    J.C. Ramirez
    Jesus Sanchez
    Vance Worley

    Something like that seems reasonable.

  8. Don’t know why, but I always seem to forget about Jesus Sanchez and Julio Rodriguez when making these lists. At least one of those two should be top 20.

  9. Hyatt missing from the FSL top 20, even though he was chosen the FSL best pitcher…plus outtasight numbers. Hmmmm. Is it possible BA considered him a reliever despite his starting most games after being in the pen to start.?

Disappointing. Hope he shows up those choosers with a fine season at Reading/Lehigh Valley in ’11.

  10. Top 20 is for prospects. Hard to see Hyatt being voted top 20 as a prospect in the FSL, when he may not be a top 20 Phillies’ prospect.

  11. For Hyatt’s sake, I rate him at #12 of the Phils’ prospects. I too am interested in what BA has to say about him and where they place him on the list.

I like the guy and his numbers did not harry that opinion.

  12. Where is Mike Rizzotti?????? It’s funny that none of the gaggle of Mike Rizzotti zealots have commented on the fact that he is not a Top 20 prospect in the Eastern League. How could that be when many of his ardent supporters have the Phillies trading Howard to make room for him or even had him as a LH bat on the playoff roster, or even funnier, trading him to the AL where he could DH????? Funny….I guess maybe all these people were going a little over board?

  14. I don’t know where Mike Rizzotti is, but Matt Rizzotti the Philly minor leaguer is not on the list either. Don’t recall anyone saying Howard should be traded If they did I believe Howard is the better guy and that is wrong. Rizzotti could still perform those other roles , if he was needed for playoffs they could have decided to add him if they plan on adding him to next season’s 40 man and added him now, but they wanted to add Dobbs and Dobbs can play 3rd plus they had Dominic Brown and the roster guys Gload and Schneider , so he was not up to that level, so not needed. Whether someone is on a BA top 40 list or not does not have much to do with making the majors, as someone of Rizzotti’s age is not going to make a BA list given their predelictions. There are only 20 spots to be spread among 14 organizations including Yankees, Red Sox, Phillies, etc. Also BA is not perfect in their foresight, and a look back on their top prospects lists over the years will reveal alot of gushing prose over players most have never heard of , and overlooked standouts if it is checked into.

  15. Haha my mistake….matt rizzotti of course. do you really truly think he was in the mix for a playoff roster spot? Please say no, please say no, please say no. If you say yes, then you’re not even worth responding to.

I agree BA lists are not perfect, and that his age plays a part in his ranking. And yes, he could possibly be a decent bench player down the road for a lower division team, but even to predict that at this point is a stretch. More likely a AAAA player like Mayberry, although Mayberry at least brings a defensive position and some wheels to the table…

  16. BA always goes with the sure bet, they will never give publicity to a 24 year old much less name him a top player. They are a money making publication and seem to always stick with the high draft prospects. As for Rizzotti, let’s see how he does in the AFL before we doom him to life as a minor leauger.

  17. Someone asked in the chat about Rizzotti. The answer was that if it wasn’t for his defense he would be a legit prospect and that Rizzotti got way more support from scouts when he was making the list then he thought. Maybe he is becoming a legitimate prospect, I’m starting to change my opinion on him…

  20. Yeah, I’m a Rizzotti fan, but I’m OK with him not making the list. Sure he was up there on the statistical leaderboards, but he’s also up there in age – and as someone else pointed out, he his defense is so poor he got stuck DHing a lot of the time.

I think Rizzotti has a real career, probably more of a career than some of the guys that made the lists, but his upside is lower and these lists aren’t ‘probability of making the majors’ type lists, there more about ‘who could end up being a ten time All-Star type of guy’. That’s not who Rizzotti is. He’s a grinder who’s going to contribute for a number of years at a decent, but not All-Star level of play.

  21. Valle may play in the Mexican Pacific League every season because it is his hometown team Caneros de Los Mochis.
