Reading Phillies Weekly Report (04/20 – 04/26)

Hello everyone.  Here is the deal.  My 6 year old computer’s health has sadly taken a turn for the worst.  Lets just call it critical condition.  Anyway, this means that I am not going to be able to publish the Reading Phillies weekly report for this week (I might write something up in a few days time when I get my hands on a working computer).  So, I am very sorry for missing a week, but, like I said, hopefully I will be back up and running shortly.  Feel free to talk about all of the awesome Reading news this week like their 4-2 record, Stutes’ 6 innings of 2 hit ball, the return of the hefty lefty, Mike Zagirthski (yes, that can be taken out of context, but lets not), the continued domination of the buzzsaw, Matt German, Bastardo’s conversion to the starting rotation, and much, much more.  Quite a week, actually, I am sorry I missed the  report.  Thanks for your understanding and go Phils.

  4. Saw Tuffy touch em all when he hit one into the Tiki Bar area in a B game against the Blue Jays in ST.

What was most impressive last week in the Stutes 2-1 win, Gosewisch was 2-for-4 offensively with what turned out to be the game winning home run in the 4th and threw out three runners at second base, two to end innings on strikeout-throwout double plays.

The Front Office must think something of him because he was sent to the Arizona Fall League the last two seasons.

That being said he is one of the more smallish catchers I have seen at the AA level.

  5. I was wondering the same thing about Tuffy. From what I heard, he is a great defensive catcher, but prior to this year, couldn’t hit. At the very least, he should be a AAAA guy who can fill in if a catcher goes down.

It was nice to see Taylor start to turn it on this week. Hopefully he catches fire.

My thoughts and prayer go out to you and your dau… computer Zac.

  6. Tuffy ought to be able to develop into a major league backup. He’s got the D. He has hit better at Reading than his prior minor league record would suggest.

  7. a mixed result from savery last night. only 1 run given up is good, but his peripherals were not good. high whip and low k rate. anyone see the game?

  8. Worley, matching his career high with seven innings, was in total control the first six, at one point retiring 15 straight batters in a 2-0 victory over the Altoona Curve. He allowed three hits, walked one and struck out a season-high seven.

Worley (2-0) likely really impressed the trio — scouting director Chuck LaMar, senior adviser Dallas Green and farm director Steve Nororyta — in the seventh, when Altoona’s first two batters reached on singles. Worley recorded a strikeout, catcher Tuffy Gosewisch picked the runner off first, and Worley ended his best stint of the season with another punchout.

Displaying a crackling 93 mph fastball and a curveball he commanded almost at will, the second-year pro from Long Beach State threw 86 pitches, 59 for strikes. He also lowered his ERA to 2.22 in four starts. It is easy to see why the organization jumped him two spots to Double-A.

  9. What about the “beast who hits baseball”. Is Taylor fully awake now. Hitting .317 Hopefully next week will be hell for the eastern league pitchers
Nice work Worley and nice work Ruben last year these guys would probably be in Clearwater at best

    1. good to see the double jump with worley and stutes and their response!
    2. taylor looks like he is catching fire. 3 hits last night. batting .378 in his last 10 games. nice ob%, pop and speed (5-0 in steals). looks like he is handling AA nicely.

  12. So it seems like Taylor simply started slow like he did in Lakewood and Clearwater. Hope he continues his progression and crushes the ball in Reading.

  14. Nepp It amazing each level he seems to start slow and then adjust and kill the ball, This kid could be ready soon, but where do they put him. It’s a nice problem to have.

  15. It’s still something of a small sample size, but Taylor’s numbers so far this year…

    71 PAs — .338/.389/.569 — 3 HR — 8.5% BB — 15.4% K — .400 SecA

He had a bit of an adjustment period moving from Low A to High A, but the adjustment period in his move to Double A has been very minimal. It’s still early, but Taylor seems to be succeeding despite making the most difficult jump in the majors, which is great news for the Phillies.

  16. Spent a cold, damp day sitting near enough to see the R-Phils speed gun at the Reading-Harrisburg game today. Joe Savery is still struggling on the mound. Was hit hard again. He made it through 5 innings to get the win but was not impressive. His fast ball topped out at 91 and sat at 87-89 most of his outing. His change up was at 75-76 and his breaking balls were in the low 80s. Just have not seen the command, movement of his pitches or velocity in the two games I have seen him start to indicate that he can be considered a top prospect to be a major league starting pitcher someday.
