‘Pigs Weekend Game Report

4/24/09– The ‘Pigs opened their homestand in a big way on Friday evening with a 13-3 drubbing of the visiting Red Sox.  After the Sox took an early 2-0 lead off starter Justin Lehr (3-0), a seven run third inning put the game away early for Lehigh Valley.  Mike Cervenak started it all with a long two run homer (2), which was followed later in the inning by a two run double by John Mayberry.  Jason Donald and Paul Hoover added RBI doubles in the inning as well.  Andy Tracy added a solo homer in the fourth (3).  A second RBI Double by John Mayberry scored two in the sixth, making it 11-3, and the ‘Pigs added yet another two runs in the seventh to give them their thirteen run total.  In a game where many broke out offensively, Donald (3-5, 2 doubles, 2 runs, RBI), Mayberry (3-4, 2 doubles, run, 4 RBI’s), and Pablo Ozuna (3-5, run, double) were the most notable.  Lehr put in a workmanlike effort on the hill, getting a quality start, going 6 innings, giving up 3 runs on 8 hits.  He walked 2 and struck out 2.

4/25/09– Kyle Kendrick got the start and struggled Saturday night, with the Sox getting four runs  before his sixth inning departure.  His line on the evening was five innings, 7 hits, 4 runs (all earned), 2 walks and 3 strikeouts.  He was pitching with runners on base all evening. He left with the ‘Pigs down 4-0.  The ‘Pigs struggled with knuckleballer Charlie Zink all night, finally getting their first hit in the 7th on a homer by John Mayberry(3).  Lehigh Valley continued making their way back, finally climbing to a 4-4 tie in the ninth on the first AAA homer for Jason Donald, which came off of Red Sox prospect, flame thrower Daniel Bard.  Unfortunately, a catchers interference call in the 10th on Paul Hoover led to the winning run scoring on a sac fly with Gary Majewski (0-1), taking the tough loss. Mayberry had two hits in the losing effort for the ‘Pigs.

4/26/09–Carlos Carrasco (0-2) was hit early and often by Pawtucket, lasting only 2.2 innings, giving up 6 runs on 8 hits, while ealking two and striking out 3.  The ‘Pigs made the final score a more respectable 7-4, behind 2 RBI doubles by Pablo Ozuna and a two run homer by Andy Tracy (4). Mike Cervenak added two hits as well for the ‘Pigs who are at 6-10 after the weekend.

Notes: The team tied a club record with their 18 hits on Friday night, and broke the club record with 13 runs.

Carlos Ruiz was the designated hitter and hit 7th on Saturday night.  He was 0-3 with two walks. On Sunday, He caught and went 1-3, with a walk.

Jeremy Slayden was given the night off on Saturday after struggling the last couple of days.

  1. yea the weird the thing about donald is he usually draws his fair share of walks, but only has 2 walks on the whole season so far and both of them were in one game

  2. That’s a bad sign…a very bad sign usually. Either he’s swing happy or pitchers simply aren’t afraid of him. Either way, its not a good development. Hopefully its simply a fluke of a small sample size.

  3. Is winter ball and the 5th starter competition catching up with Carlos after yesterday’s outing:

”I didn’t feel very good today,” said Carrasco, showing a blister on the inside of his right thumb and adding that his right elbow ”is sore a little bit.”
The blister, Carrasco said, flattened out his curve and affected his change-up, allowing Pawtucket (10-6) to tee off on both pitches during a five-run third that featured two walks and five hits.

  4. The sore elbow is certainly a concern but what Carrasco still needs to learn is that he will not have his best stuff every start.

Good pitchers learn how to battle through outings with sub-par stuff.
