Lehigh Valley Report

An abridged version of the weekly Lehigh Valley report with only the opener, to report on. The ‘Pigs got off to a rough start and a rougher end in their 11-3 opening night loss to Scranton.  The night began with a JJ Furmaniak error leading to two unearned runs for the Yanks in the first, before Kyle Kendrick settled down to go four innings yielding only the two unearned runs on four hits.  He walked three and struck out one.  Kendrick threw 82 pitches, 50 for strikes and was pitching out of trouble for most of his four innings.  The ‘Pigs got back into the game in the second inning on an RBI single by Furmaniak, who had three hits on the night.  Pablo Ozuna followed that up with a two run single in the fourth inning, giving the ‘Pigs a short lived 3-2 lead.  The floodgates opened in the fifth inning with Dave Borkowski (0-1) giving up two runs, and then John Ennis getting rocked in the 6th giving up five more.  Lehigh Valley was unable to put anything together after that point and dittoed their opening day loss to the Yankees last year.

  1. Thx Gregg for your report. Most everyone went to the Drabek update first but the Pigs will be critical this year. I love that 10K fans showed up. I’m sorry the Pigs didn’t give them a lot to cheer about. Mayberry, Donald and Marson who will be in the Majors soon enough. The fans will be able to say, “I remember seeing him when he was in the Valley.”

I see it’s Carrasco against Ian Kennedy tonight. That would be a fun game to watch. There will be cheering soon.

  2. Gosh, I’d love to see Carrasco vs. Kennedy. Sounds like on heck of a matchup.

Where’s the guys predicting Kendrick would get bombed? I still don’t know if he’s an ML pitcher but he’s not that bad.

  4. i wouldn’t exactly conclude that kendrik’s outing was a success. his peripherals were terrible. if he was in the bigs, it would have been ugly.

  5. Didn’t think Kendrick could go four solid innings. I don’t think mayberry will be anything more than a four or fifth outfielder.

  7. Umm…we are phils fans… is it really that unexpected for us to WANT Kendrick to get shelled? Plus, better him than anyone else right? Its that damn little boy, i’m about to cry face that he makes that has us all eager to pounce on him.

  8. I’m hoping he’s actually working on developing a change-up rather than worrying about his stat line.

The idea is to work on flaws and develop new skills that are needed against better talent. If all Kendrick is doing at AAA is trying to win games by throwing sinkers then he’s wasting everyone’s time, including his own.

Seems that too many people lose track of the purpose for the minor leagues.

  9. 3up3kkk is absolutely correct kendrick is working on flaws don’t excpect much early on because all he has is the sinker which he is gonna try and avoid to use so he can devlop his other pitches

Needs at least two more reliable pitches. Hope that’s what he’s working on. Might be getting that stupid “pitch to contact” advice the Phils are famous for. The outing itself was borderline awful; lots of baserunners, few Ks, good timing on the outs.

  11. That may be the case, but he might be better off doing that at a lower level or even at the complex until something starts to click. If he keeps getting hammered, it’ll just get real tough mentally. I’ve always thought we’ve seen the best of KK, but I don’t know if the Phillies are going about the best way to prove me wrong.
