7. Lehigh Valley

A couple of points to clarify the IronPigs roster in light of earlier predictions:

–Neither Joe Bisnius nor Antonio Bastardo are on the ‘Pig opening day roster.  Both are starting the year in the Reading bullpen.

–Experienced major league reliever Gary Majewski joins the ‘Pig bullpen after being the last cut made by the Phils.

–Late Spring Training pickup Francisco Butto, 28, will round out the bullpen. Butto, a righthander pitched in the Mexican League last year going 3-0 with a 3.20 in 57 games pitched, all in relief.

–Also on the ‘Pigs roster in 34 year old infielder Jorge Velandia. Velandia played 80 games at AAA last year primarily at shortstop hitting .233 in 300 AB’s.  He had 3 homers and 2o RBI’s to go along with 2 stolen bases.

—OF Jeremy Slayden, 3B Terry Tiffee and P Scott Mathieson all start the year on the Lehigh Valley disabled list.

–There are still lawn seats remaining for Thursday’s opening night matchup against Scranton.

–Look for Jason Donald to see some time at 3B while Terry Tiffee is on the disabled list.

  1. Don’t know how to feel about Bastardo being put in the pen. He probably has a better chance of sticking as a lefty reliever, but I still feel like he has a chance to be a major league starter.

  2. Just watching florida play and saw Riley Cooper hitting 230 and couple of homeruns, he was a pick I really wanted them to sign, but it just shows to me how hard it is to project these kids, cooper right now doesn’t seem like a top ten prospect,

  3. Anyone know why Mathieson is on the DL and will he be used as a starter or reliever when he gets off the DL?

  4. mathieson is on the DL because he is still rehabbing from his last elbow surgery. From what i understand, he is throwing, but is not yet ready for games. Not sure how he will be used once he recovers, it all depends on his arm strength and how he feels.

  5. I read Mathieson wants to be game ready in May… probably late May. I’m also not ready to give up on Bastardo as a starter. We tried to change Outman and he’s pitching pretty well with the A’s. I don’t mind the trade because it brought us Blanton but it shows that making Outman a reliever was a poor (maybe too strong a word) decision.

  6. I think Mathierson *if* he makes it back will be in the pen. But I guess you never know.

    As far as Outman, he made the A’s rotation by default. Everyone else either got injured, or got bombed. He is the 5th starter at the moment until Sean Gallagher gets his stuff together or Justin Duscherer is healthy. His future most likely still lies in the bullpen.

    Our old buddy Gio still can’t get it together is like 8th or 9th on their depth chart it seems.
