Lakewood and Reading rosters posted

You can find the Lakewood roster here, and the Reading roster here.

Notes;

* Vance Worley and Mike Stutes were both double jumped to Reading. I really can’t believe it, but it should be interesting.

* Edgar Garcia isn’t on the Reading roster.

* Michael Taylor is on the Reading squad, as is Brad Harman, which I find a bit surprising.

* Jason Knapp made the Lakewood roster, Trevor May isn’t here, and Julian Sampson is absent too, so it looks like he’s FSL bound.

* Gose and Collier are both in the Lakewood outfield, and Mattair is listed at 3B, with Overbeck not on the roster, which to me indicates he’s being jumped to Clearwater. Sebastian Valle is also listed on the Lakewood roster, and he’ll presumably split time with D’Arnaud.

  1. Anyone know what pitchers are expected to start and which ones are expected to pitch in relief at Lakewood? I live fairly close to there and want to catch a couple of games this summer.

  2. Good work Jeff, Thanks.

Threshers with 3 Aussies, 2 as catchers and Coach Kevin Jordan previously converted to Aussieness…
    Interesting

What happened with 2 other Aussies Al Schoenberger and Angus Roeger ??

  3. Harman is on the disabled list, so it doesn’t really matter where they start him at. Looks like Carlos Leon will start off in his place. Various things off in the various lists. Jesus Sanchez is still listed as a catcher after he converted to pitcher, no minor league team will carry 4 catchers, and they have Valle listed as a LH bat, when I thought it was established he is RH bat. Team websites usually get a few things wrong and also websites about team websites, so I will wait for the official team story about who makes the roster and check what makes it to http://www.milb.com before I etch these into stone.

  4. I noticed that Overbeck wasn’t listed on Crupper’s Clearwater roster.

It’s nice that Taylor will be at Reading. No real surprises on these rosters – it’s nice to see them challenging a good bit of their prospects.

Kindof odd that both Valle and D’Arnaud will be at Lakewood. Maybe they wanted to get Valle on a full season roster, even if D’Arnaud gets the bulk of the at bats. Then they can send SV to Williamsport once their season starts.

  5. I was in error. Harman is not on Disabled List, but is designated as on the 40 man roster. Their Disabled List is Edgar Garcia (not released as erroneously reported here), J. MacIntosh (ditto) , and Manny Ayala (who nobody even said was trying out). The Reading and Lakewood rosters are about as rock solid , accuracy wise, as could be expected on this.

Valle- remember Clearwater and Lakewood use a full-time Designated Hitter Rule, so they can easily alternate D’Arnaud and Valle if they want. I suppose they will either do that or one of the Outfield combination of Gose, Collier, L. Castro, or D’Arby Myers.

  6. Mitchell and Warren are at Clearwater. Jeff C. posted that earlier.

It’s good to see Alex Concepcion on Reading. He’s been hurt but he has some talent. They also only have 1 IF prospects (barely). Harmon’s there and it’s where I think he should be. Like the OF. Berry, Milner and Taylor will make it exciting. This is Milner’s year to show what he has. Berry will also have to show he can get on base because his speed means nothing other wise. I see they finally adjusted Matt German’s height.

I was surprised to see Sanchez as a catcher but I’m thinking like Marfis. They haven’t updated him to pitcher on the roster. I don’t like D’arnaud and Valle on the same team but I think they conjecture is right. Valle will play until SS starts. But I’d rather see Naughton at Reading, D’Arnaud at Clearwater and Valle at Lakewood. I notice Villegas Andino is at Lakewood. I thought he might be as high as AA.

Clearwater’s got some pop in Durant, Mitchell, Brown and Rizzotti. I thought Durant needed more time at Lakewood but he’s got big power. I like the pitching staff here too. I wish I could get to see some of these games.

    It’s time to play ball!!!

Extended spring training is more of a ‘camp’ then a roster. So no official list will be generated. They’ll play training games against the locals (alot of blue jays), but box scores aren’t kept. I think the games are a little more formal then the FIL (where they will stop games to introduce a desired situation), but still not as formal as an ‘official’ game.

  9. As reported on Beerleaguer (via the Reading Eagle):
Right-hander Edgar Garcia, who debuted in Reading last summer at age 20, will also return to the starting staff, but his arrival from the Dominican Republic has been delayed by visa issues. He might not be in the Double-A picture until May.

  10. Edgar Garcia might not be Edgar Garcia and he maybe 23-24 years old. There are 70 prospects being held in the dominican for investigation.

Yeah isnt it nice to see them challenge people instead of playing safe. I am so tired of hearing “break a playes confidence” This business takes guts and the worse thing is taking it as easier than it is. Right minded guys will rebound if neccessary (read MT)

  15. They’re certainly showing a lot of faith in Stutes and Worley with those promotions; hopefully the two of them respond by holding their own.

The only other (mildly) surprising thing to me is that Gose is headed to Lakewood. The book on him coming out was that his hit tool was a question mark, but we’ve generally heard good reports on him this spring (from Rickey Branch and others), so it looks like he’s made enough strides in that area to warrant a look in full-season ball at age 18.

  16. The most surprising roster item so far is that Jesus Sanchez with one inning of pitching last year in the GCL will be in the starting rotation for Lakewood while Justin De Fratus who led the NY-Penn league in innings pitched last year will be in the Blue Claw pen. I saw Sanchez pitch one inning in ST. He threw hard with little movement on his fastball and did break off a hanging curve but I never viewed him as an opening week starting pitcher.

According to Blue Claws Blog reports Lakewood’s starting rotation is Knapp, Roth, Diekman, Cloyd and Sanchez. Accrdoing to the R-Phils site Reading’s starters are Savery, Stutes , Worley, Concepcion and Brummett. Knapp, Roth and Stutes were impressive in the spring and though I did not see Savery pitch LaMar is quoted as saying he was hitting 90-91 with his fast ball in his spring training starts.

  17. Most of the players in extended end up either playing at Williamsport in June or stay in Florida for the GCL. Extended spring training is held on the same fields as the GCL. The season doesn’t begin in the GCL until after the June draft, but games are none the less played nearly every day. It’s really just a continuation except they keep win, lose records and publish stats.

  18. BTW, the player refer to this period between now and the start of short season leagues as ground hog days. The same thing every day. Instruction in the morning, lunch at the complex always the same food, games in the afternoon, strength and conditioning. This goes on for mouths almost every day. Ie, ground hog day.

  22. Hmm…I’ve looked at Lakewood and CW rosters. I don’t see much on Hewitt. Do we think he’s going to play up in Williamsport this year? We’ve been trying hard to follow some of our Phuture Phillies, even going to every one of the Phil’s minor league parks last year to watch various players. I just can’t seem to find much on him.

sanchez must be a good pitcher if he’s going to be in the rotation for l’wood”

I read somewhere as well that someone referred to him as ‘in the rotation’, but with Diekman, Roth, DeFratus, Knapp, and Cloyed that makes 5 already. Early in the season they piggy back so i guess thats where Sanchez will be getting his innings.

I think they want to send him to williamsport but are probably haveing a tough time with that as he doesn’t seem to have shown much in terms of production in his spring ABs.

  28. threshersbaseball.com now has the roster up. It is the same as Jeff’s except add Cody Overbeck to the active roster and add the following three pitchers as all on the disabled list: Walter Tejeda, Michael Cisco and Sam Walls.

  29. I feel bad for groundball pitchers at Clearwater (Julian Sampson) – he’s got a couple of butchers at the corners. Maybe Galvis can cover the whole left side of the infiield.

Of course, by midseason, Hamilton (who will be hitting over .350 for Lakewood by that point – I’m standing by my “this year’s Michael Taylor” for him) and Mattair could be moved up from Lakewood, thus drastically improving the infield defense.

Is it just me or is anyone else more excited about the Minor League clubs than they are about the Phillies?
