2009 Minor League Workout Groups: 3/24 Update

UPDATED:  3/24/09

Here is a look at the current workout groups for the Phillies minor league teams.  Keep in mind that there will be MANY changes before the season actually gets underway.  Players are still going to get sent down from the Phillies ST roster to the minors.  That will create a ripple effect of players on this list moving down.  Also (and unfortunately) many of these players will be cut before the season starts and may not end up on any roster despite where they are listed now.  There was a small first round of cuts this week with 11 guys getting their walking papers.

This is updated weekly (on Tuesdays this year), so I will try to get the new groups up ASAP again next week. .

  1. No huge surprises on the cuts though it is always a little surprising to see most recent draftees released. Phillies still have to trim probably another 25+ players before setting rosters. I am hoping most of those come from Groups 1 and 2.

  2. Today at the Carpenter Complex, it was Group 3 (Lakewood 08) vs. the Pirates on Robin Roberts Field. Joe Blanton gave up one hard hit in 7 innings of work , a long ball over the left field wall by a young Bucco. Joel Naughton did a good job of handling Blanton. Four of Blanton’s first six outs were ground balls to Freddy Galvis. On the fifth grounder to Freddy he short hopped Durant who could not make the scoop again. Durant, Naughton, and Mattair all had hard hit gap doubles. Tim Binkowski continues his torrid hitting with two more hits. Terry Tiffee was given two at bats in the first two innings and showed by his lack of foot speed trying to beat out a grounder that was booted at second why he never played much in the Show. Harold Garcia played at second turning a DP, picking up a walk and showed speed in stealing second.

    Over on Schmidt Field, Group 4 (GCL 08 Phils) took on even younger Bucs. My wife reports that Hamels looked strong and was confident about his 3.2 innings of work with Tuffy Gosewisch as his battery mate. She talked with Cole after his outing as she was one of about 40 persons for whom he stayed and signed autographs. I got over to Schmidt just in time to see another triple by Anthony Gose to the opposite field into the wind over the left fielders head. Jeremy Hamilton had a good inning late in the game with a line drive base hit to right and a Web gem play on a high hopper at First. That guy knows how to defense. Chad Poe pitched a strong inning in relief showing off a nice curve ball that got him two strike outs.

  3. What do the pound signs and asterisks next to names mean?

    Thoughts:
    -Interesting to see Trevor May in the XST group. I was hoping he’d get pushed to Lakewood like Sampson.
    -Hewitt will be a mess if they start him at Lakewood, but I guess it’s better that he see better breaking stuff to get acclimated.
    -Good to see Heitor Correa back. Having him pitching just adds to the prospect arsenal.
    -I’m really excited to see Valle and Slate at Lakewood.
    -I’m guessing Mayberry’s eventual demotion will knock Dom Brown down to Clearwater, but he should make it to reading sometime after the draft.

  7. I remember demmink being drafted by the phillies, and that day He was bench for lack of defense. couldn’t figure how they projected this guy so high. He was a college liability in the field and not a great hitting prospect

  11. Did not get to see much of Group 5 play. But did see Nerio Rios line a hard hit single into the hole between SS and 3b. They were playing a Community College called Faulkner State from some where in Alabama on Ashburn Field.

  14. Dave, I spent two years going to GCL games at the complex every day and Thresher games in the evening. I was in baseball heaven.

  15. Tim Binkoski is the real deal! Do you think he will end up in Clearwater even though he is not a prospect? He should be by now! He hits and hits and hits!

  17. Mitchell won’t make it, because he can’t “mentally” throw a baseball. Ask Rizzotti or Durant if they have any confidence at all in his being able to turn the routine play. Balls hit to the 4 hole are always an adventure. Take a look at his error rate last year in Lakewood. 85% were throwing errors. And he’s not your prototypical DH.

  19. D’Arnaud has to start at Lakewood, doesn’t he? Travis at Lakewood and that pushes Valle down to Williamsport.

  20. Apparently Darin McDonald has quit college football and is returning to the phils. Though he doesn’t seem able to hit to make it worth the phillies while.

  21. Max, you’re right he’s going to have to get better with his mechanics. His throws are sometimes inconsistent. He is getting better from whence he was signed and second base is a new position for him. We will see.

    It’s his approach at the plate that makes me believe he’s going to have a break out year. He’s starting to pick up gap power. His stats were better then either Galvis or Mattairs at Lakewood. He’s been improving every year since signing. Let’s hope a year at Clearwater with all the player development folks close by benefits him.

  22. Interesting to see Harold Garcia pushed all the way to group 3. Yohan Flande as well. These were older players at GCL that look to be headed at least to Lakewood. Might as well see if they can play as they are already 22 or 23.

  24. Slate is out with tendinitis in shoulder – correct ? Has he thrown at all yet this spring ? I think he is expected to jump SS and go to Lakewood, but if he is not throwing yet, this is not good.

  25. Wait–is it a surprise to see Savery at AAA? My impression was that he is going to be at Reading this year. I suppose he moves down there when Carrasco gets sent down at the end of camp?

  26. Also Furmaniak as a Right-Handed Hitter, Haines as a Switch-Hitter, Galvis as a Switch-Hitter, German as a Left-Handed Pitcher, Woods as a Left-Handed Pitcher, and J.C.Rodriguez as a Right-Handed Hitter.

  31. Well – decent defensive catchers do tend to get taken in the Rule 5 draft even if they are young and can’t hit (Ryan Budde, Adam Donachie, etc.). Since nobody else was taken from the Phillies, they didn’t make a bad choice. The only downside is the start of running his three option years.

    By the way – big day for the Phillies minor leaguers yesterday.

  33. Naughton batted .275 at Lakewood @ 21 Years old. He’s got a cannon for an arm. We walks as much as he Ks. I like the kids alot. But… there are 5 catchers on the 40 man. 1/8 of it is (are) catchers. I agree with Squire that he’d be snapped up by a lot of other teams. I’d like to see him at AA. Let D’Arnaud have CLTR and let’s see Valle play in Lakewood.

  36. There will be lots of players cut before they set the rosters because there’s just too many on these lists. In group 5, Paulino looked to be a guy to follow. I saw him kill the ball in bp but then I saw him in the game look totally confused by off speed. He also has a gun at 3B. Sladek is huge and looks very athletic and James, the converted pitcher, looks like a monster athlete. I watched Naughton in bp two days in a row and the kid can really hit and he hit with power to left center (he’s a lefty) which is a terrific quality. Definitely count me in on the Mattair list. He looked totally different in a better way as if he figured “it” out. He’s been hitting very well in the games with power which he didn’t show last year even though he is very big and strong. This is a kid that could jump to the top 10 with a big year. No surprise but there are many very good pitchers on these lists and and we could have an awful lot of fun in the next few years following this group. let’s hope!!

    Probably … I had a different “first list” than the one originally posted here, so I only went by my list. They were probably released in between times, and so I just missed them when I prepped this list.

  38. Good point on Naughton Squire.

    As you mentioned though, this starts a clock ticking so it’ll be interesting to see what happens with him as he looks like the odd man out with D’Arnaud, Marson and Valle all looking like better long-term prospects then him. Trade bait anyone?

  39. Well if these projected rosters hold close to form, the Threshers look like they will be an interesting team to watch. Drabek, Sampson, Chapman, Cisco, Mattair, D’Arnoud, Galvis. A little thin in the outfield but I still have the candle lit for D’Arby Myers.

    The Iron Pigs also look like they could compete for a title this year. Carrasco, Kendrick, Carpenter, Bisenius, Donald, Savary(even though I don’t think much of him), Marson, Mayberry, Moran(not much of a prospect but a good minor leaguer), Harman.

    Question for you guys. Looking at the Jaramillo for Paulino trade in hindsight. Does it make more sense to keep the better defensive guy in Jaramillo, or does Paulino’s offensive potential make him the better player.

    I think if we kept Jaramillo he would be Ruiz’ backup this year and Lou has the job all to himself in Lehigh. Paulino just doesn’t do enough to justify keeping him on the Phillies and all he does is take away time from Marson in AAA. Jaramillo is going to be a career backup and would fit right in at either Philly or Lehigh this year. I have a feeling that Paulino is going to be a headcase complainer in Lehigh this year.

  40. I doubt Savery will be in AAA this year. Not unless he is lights out in Reading. Even then, I doubt they move him up.

    The Paulino trade made sense at the time because they clearly thought he would beat out Coste for the backup position as he was killing the ball in Winter Ball. So far, he has disappointed to say the least. It was also a standup thing for Amaro to do for Jaramillo since at least in Pittsburgh he might have a chance at an MLB spot…something that likely would never have happened in Philly.

  41. FWIW, here are Jaramillo’s Spring stats with the Pirates:

    13 G, 27 AB, 1 R, 4 TB, 4 H, 0 2B, 0 3B, 0 HR, 2 RBI, .148 AVG.

  42. perfect stats for a backup NEPP. Any errors?

    How often does the backup catcher get to hit anyway? They don’t want to burn them in case the starter gets hurt.

    What you need is a good defensive guy who can catch Lidge’s breaking ball after Ruiz gets pinch ran for in the 8th.

    Do we have anybody on the bench who’s faster than Ruiz? I guess we won’t be pinch running for Ruiz so the backup catcher just play the day game after a night game and one of the games in a doubleheader.

    It was a standup thing for Amaro to do. and Paulino should be beating out Coste. But he isn’t. That’s why he scares me… he comes to philly looking to be an MLB backup and gets shipped to Lehigh and starts 1 game a week. He’s gonna make noise.

    At least Jaramillo had a front row seat to read the writing on the wall.

  43. Behind Doumit I dont think so. He had a better chance here. Jaramillo was cooked either way. What do you do with Paulino
    now. Lets try Houston who knows what Silly Ed will do. Trade unwanted players with the Rockies and throw in some cash
    Personally I hope to see Marson and Donald sooner than later and i do hope Mayberry makes it. At some point u have to turn over the roster a little

  44. Max, notice they are starting to play Mitchell in the outfield some. Maybe that’s their plan to convert him to an outfielder or super utility player. He’s play every infield position except 1b as a regular.

  45. I am a little surprised that Moises Melendez was released. He had a nice year as a middle reliever, and while he will never be more than Condrey II a big league club still needs guys like him.

  46. Jaramillo didn’t have much of a future in Philly or much value so if Paulino doesn’t work out it’s not the worst thing to happen. This deal will soon be swept into the dustbin of history only to be reviewed by some detailed blogger in five years during a retrospect on Amaro’s tenure.

    I mean he has a better chance to be a defensive backup in Pittsburgh because they have Doumit (an offensive catcher) whereas our starter is already a defense only type of catcher. No point to have Jaramillo (another defense first type of guy) backing him up.

  49. Savery will get bumped down to AA once the Phillies make more cuts to the ML roster. I doubt they will open the season with both Koplove and Majewski on the 25 man roster. Not to mention the catcher, utility infielder, and bench situations

  52. On Tuesday Roth pitched 3 solid innings (0R 2H 2K 0W) against a college team along with the group5 kids. Solarte had a 1b and a SB, James a 2b, Rios a 1b, and F.Diaz a 1b.Today Worley pitched with the AA group against the Yankee farmhands and went 4 inn, 0R, 3H, 1K and 0W. He looked in complete control the first 3 innings but needed a DP to get out of the 4th.

  53. It was tough watching Groups 1 and 2 today. Unless watching Victorino running back and forth leading off each inning for both Groups is what you came to see. Not much home grown talent on display. Not many prospects to get excited about. Worley was on the mound for Group 2 when I got there and everything he threw was up in the zone but the wind was blowing in from center at Schmidt so he got through it. Cruse, Bisenius, Savage and Butto followed. They were Ok. Savage looks like he is back from his injury. Lundquist liked a Savage swinging strike out on one of his breaking balls. Noworyta and Heimueller seemed please with Butto as they patted him on his back side as he headed to the clubhouse after his inning but I did not see much. Milner kept swinging at sliders in the dirt from Yankee pitchers. And they kept walking Kennelly. Taylor just stood and watched a few inning from behind the home plate screen. Dom Brown did not play either. Glad they got some rest.

    Over on Ashburn when I turned my head, it seemed that John Ennis was pitching every inning but that was better than watching Bazardo who came on in relief. Marson had a nice line drive hit to right center and Brad Harman made contact and hit a long fly out to left center. Other than that it is sure alot more fun watching Groups 3 and 4 on days when they are playing at the Complex.

  54. Re: Mitchell becoming utility – didn’t Demmink start as a marginal 3B and get turned into a utility guy? That’s probably a bad sign for Mitchell in a farm system with no real standouts at 2nd (I believe his backup was Winn in Lakewood and I haven’t even seen him on the lists).

  57. Chris, Mitchell hits a lot better then Demmick ever did and Dem was mostly a 3b and catcher. Yea, Dennis Winn played all the infield spots. Interesting story, was draft years ago by the Phillies late in the draft. Choose to go to college but wasn’t drafted after finishing school. Caught on with the Phillies but apparently has decided to move on. He had some talent.

  62. They are apparently trying to move Paulino – I only mention this here as his presence will likely affect the AAA roster at this point.

  64. The nats will definitely draft and sign Strasburg although he’ll cost them plenty with all the hype. Remember that this kid was the only college pitcher on the Olympic team and they used him as their main starter. Personally, I love as much good talent in the division as we can get to watch them play more often.

    The only off day from today till 4/4 is Sunday the 29th. There should be 2 games each day AAA and AA or A+ and A-.

Actually, ABR, demmink spent the majority of his playing time in the outfield this past season…the unfortunate thing for Mitchell, despite him being a marginally better hitter, is that there seem to be a ton of outfielders in the system who aren’t just utility guys, they’re every day guys – I question if he’ll get the chance to really test that (much like Demmink)…if he hits like he did last year, it wouldnt be advantageous to have him as a DH, and his defense (from last year), doesn’t make him a good defensive substitution either…all in my opinion, of course.

    Not to mention, you can only miss first base by so much at that distance, from the outfield there’s a much larger margin for error…

  68. I agree. this is certainly a critical year for Mitchell no matter what position he evenually plays. He either becomes good enough to add to the 40 man or he’ll be gone.

    Actually in the number of games I saw at Lakewood last summer (and I saw quite a few), I saw Mitchell throw the ball in the stands at least 4 times! From the 4 hole.

  70. According to Larry Shenk’s blog, the Phils will be finalizing minor league rosters today and making a large number of cuts. I’m surprised that this is happening this early but I guess he would know…

    Well I’ll head to the complex in the morning to see what I can find out. Probably won’t be any “official” roster updates until early next week though would be my guess…if I find out otherwise I will put an updated workout roster up.

  78. Binkoski was cut while having a really good spring–surprised the heck out of me.

    Also thought Scott Thomas would stick as a backup catcher–good defense, decent stick, reportedly didn’t mind backing up.

    Although I like these guys, seeing Urick, Haines, Hollins, Walker, Arhart, and a couple of the older catchers get cut is promising in terms of prospects moving up a bit.

  79. Binkoski worked very hard to get as far as he got, and the only thing I can figure is they felt he didn’t “fit the profile” in size and stature.

    He is certainly a player and hope he gets a chance somewhere, if he decides to continue the quest.

  80. Bazardo, Cruse, Pope, Urick, Hargrave, Binkoski, were biggest surprises for me. Any one else have some shockers? I think most of these guys will get picked up.

  82. Rey Cruz has been in the system for quite some time. Has been injured the last couple of years, so I guess it’s no surprise. Cruse is a little bit of a surprise.
