Interesting how Joe Savery confirmed the lack of conditioning going into last year, and that he seems to have made sure that it won’t be the case this year.

It would be awesome to see Savery pumping fastballs in there at 92/93 again…maybe it’ll happen.

Interesting in the article that LaMar is talking about Drabek being on the AA level, I wonder if he gets off to a good start in A ball this year if they will move him more agressively through the system.

Probably…if he shows unhittable stuff, there’s really no reason to keep him at Single A.

i am looking forward to being wrong about Savery this year. but i do think that they are doing him a disservice by jumping him. they should let him start in A and blow people away.

Agreed – let Savery go back down to Clearwater and dominate. People forget this, but Hamels started 2006 in Clearwater and it sure as heck didn’t hurt him. Savery needs a running start this year.

A weather start or two in Clearwater wont hurt Drabek either

Watching both this season could be a great pleasure .
Making it to AA Reading would be a real test, but both would likely start the season on Clwtr A ball…and move up as their effectiveness shows.
Thinking about having them both as “rookie” starters in–maybe–’10 would solidify the team’s more immediate future along with Carrasco who just might learn to not fall apart when the opposition gets a couple hits in an inning.

I believe Savery is beginning the season at AA, I may be wrong though…

It will be interesting as we try to slot where guys should start the season. I think the Phillies don’t challenge guys the way some other organizations do. I read an article that Michael Taylor was going to start in Clearwater. I know James agrees with me (or should I say I agree with James) that Taylor has to go to AA. Recently a writer said Taylor will go to AA to start. I hope that’s the case.
Savery should start in AA. If he has trouble, like Carpenter, then it will have to be addressed. At some point these guys become big boys and have to be challenged. You can’t always worry about hurting their confidence. Tell them what you want and expect and let the baby bird fly. After all it is spring or at least it will be.

By midseason if there is the growth we expect management may be forced to move people up. And of cource it is a new crew or at least a new head to set the tone. I could see them going college early in the draft, potential later which will increase movement

Does Savery stepping up a level in velocity change the pitching outlook in upper minors or what? That would be BIG. The command, consistency, mechanical stuff can be fixed. Getting that velocity back transforms him from potential #5 to #3 in rotation.

to be clear, the article doesn’t say that savery has his velocity up. it says he hasn’t even been on the gun yet.
let’s not get ahead of ourselves and put unrealistic expectations on the kid.

I’m guessing the Phils will sign Hamels long term and maybe Blanton too when the time comes. That leaves 3 spots open in the future: Happ, Carrasco, Drabek. All this can happen in the 2010 off-season. That’s going to be a prety good rotation for a long time.

Can’t wait to see the AA roster. I live just over the bridge from the Trenton Thunder and already have tickets for 4 of 6 games on the schedule. 3 in late June and 3 in mid August. I’m thinking I have a good shot to see a lot Taylor and Brown then at some point maybe a start from Drabek.

And the law of pitching attrition will see to it that it never happens. Most best case scenario’s you can hope to have 3 good prospects and one of them becomes whats expected of them as a prospec.
