Wrapping up the Reader Top 30

Personal favorite Justin De Fratus took home #30, rounding out this year’s Reader Top 30. I’d like to thank everyone who took the time to vote and discuss, this year’s voting was even more successful than last year’s. 1. the fact that a prospect as good as justin de fratus checks in at #30 says something very good about this phillies system. i personally had been voting for him for a while, but this is a 30-rack with several guaranteed major leaguers and several other possible all-stars. i’m excited for this season.

  2. You could easily flip Marson and Brown and have the list make sense. We love Lou, but, as a group, we have overvalued him.

  3. I like Brown where he is…I love projection and all, but he needs to show something at a higher level before I get out the anointing oil. However, I’m confident that he will do so.

I think Savery was a tad high at #9. I’d personally have D’Arnaud over Marson too. I know I’ve said it before, but D’Arnaud could be special.

  4. There could be 4 or 5 guys on this list that make a ripple or possibly a splash in the big leagues this year. Happ is a big leaguer in my book and I hope he proves me right. Donald’s going to get a look at 2nd until Utley’s ready. Marson’s should make the Phillies move him up sometime during the year. If bad things happen to the starting rotation, Carrasco could be called up and Mayberry might see some time, although less likely.

Next year, let’s hope we’re talking about making room for Taylor with Brown not far behind. Okay, simmer down, I’m getting ahead of myself.

My top 30 won’t include Saunderson, Gose or possibly Shreve or Cosart but I don’t fault anyone for putting them on the list. I haven’t fully completed my list yet but I know Hewitt goes on at 30. I have very little faith that he’ll be a Major Leaguer but I recognize his potential to be a good or very good player.

  5. I had Brown at 4, but I have no problem with his overall ranking. Of the guys in front of him, the top 3 could be significant contributors at the Major League level this year, the number #4 guy has #1 starter potential (and seems fully recovered from TJ), and the #5 guy is our most exciting position prospect since Howard.

That being said, I think Brown could be the top prospect in the Phils organization next year, especially given his winter league performance. He was ridiculously consistent last year at Lakewood, but not spectacular (whereas Taylor was consistent and more often than not spectacular). I’m guessing he turns it up a notch, and may even get a midseason promotion to Reading. With his plate discipline, he should be a force to be reckoned with.

  6. If some of these projectionable guys that didn’t make the list begin to establish themselves and the Phils dump money into some late round fliers this coming draft… we may need to upgrade to a top 40 next year.

  7. Mark my words, Jason Donald is going to exceed expectations, perhaps by quite a lot. Don’t be surprised if he gradually takes over the MLB spot at third this year (Feliz was just a placeholder in any event) and turns out to be a rookie of the year candidate. He’s a stud. I expect him to start the year at LHV and be promoted by May or June (because why make him arbitration eligible any earlier than necessary? The Phillies are masters at the delayed call-up).

  8. It’s now time to see these stars of tomorrow play at the Carpenter Complex. Can’t wait. Minor league pitchers and catchers report March 6, followed by infielders and outfielders on March 9.

  9. I can’t wait until tomorrow for the first glimpse of 2009 beginning tomorrow. The big minor leaguers will be reporting early, and as mentioned the rest report in about 2 weeks. PLUS it’s my birthday weekend, and a holiday on Monday to recover. The Phillies will be having their fan fest in Cleawater a week from today on Friday the 20th (the Rays have theirs tomorrow in St. Pete as a side note.)

  10. Catch22: I think you could flip any of our first 5-6 prospects and make a good case. That’s a good thing in a way. No sure-fire Cole Hamels, Pat Burrells or Chase Utleys, but a half dozen solid starter-grade players, any of whom would not surprise to have an All-Star year or two a few years down the line, or at least receive consideration. I’m talking Brown/Taylor, Marson/Donald, Carrasco/Drabek.

After that, we’re talking more about contributors than even borderline AS potential, with the exception of D’Arnaud–and Knapp, maybe, who has already demonstrated dominance at a young age.

To me that is a second-tier system. Pretty darn good, but no sure-fire all-stars. That could change in a year or two as Brown, Taylor and Drabek develop and maybe approach the level that Utley or Hamels were at 2-3 few years ago.

  11. To add to my last post: What gives our system more strength is the number of young, toolsy guys at lower levels. But that’s just potential. They could all flame out or be mediocre in majors. Or 3-4 could really step up and raise our system several notches. How Amaro continues the tradion of last year’s draft will be huge also. He needs to go over slot for 3-4 guys again in later rounds.

  12. That rating doesn’t surprise me at all. Watching Galvis even in a single game makes it obvious the kid can field like hell. The problem is that if he can’t hit, he won’t be a starting caliber SS no matter how good his defense is. Think John McDonald.

  13. It’s so fun to look at this now (a month or two in to the season) & think….what was I think’n? Can’t wait to get Williamsport started to see how Shreve, May & Pettibone do.
