  1. Ok, so Heyward is ranked 10th but is Goldstein’s 6th best position player. What!?

I can see Weiters but is COlby Rasmus and Alverez really that much better than Heyward, who will terrorize the Phillies for YEARS to come?

  2. People seem to either be Taylor or Brown supporters. I’m probably more of a Taylor guy myself, but I can’t imagine listing Taylor #55 and not having Brown on there somewhere.

‘Wow’ at Michael Inoa at #20. I remember the rumor that the Phils were going after him. It’s a shame they didn’t.

LaPorta at 1B now? Cardenas at SS? What did I miss there?

  3. Just to clarify, as I recall the Phillies were never rumored to be after Michel Inoa. The rumor was that the Phillies were pursuing RHP Adis Portillo who was in the next tier of available International Free Agents. Then they did what they usually do – avoid the top names and sign a couple guys to 125K range bonuses.

  4. I’m surprised as well on the Dominic Brown thing. People seem to flip-flop them a lot, but as Rodeo points out, with Taylor that high I though Brown would have sunk in there. I’m also intrigued (though obivously not disappointed) about Drabek being named. He must have really liked what he saw/heard about him in Hawaii this year. I’m really looking forward to seeing what he can do this year.

  5. SteveB: If Drabek makes it to Reading this year, do you think there’s a chance to see him in Philly in 2010? At least in September? I’m thinking he should definitle stay in AA/AAA for most of 2010, just on the principle that it’s only his second full year back from TJ. Don’t want him to tax his arm on the adrenaline that may come up from a mid-season callup, much like Hamels had had in his first exposure, where he overthrew a lot.

  6. i think the only way donald makes the big club is as a third baseman. everyone loves but look at the contracts people. wheres he gona play? outfield? hes been playing some second base in case utley isnt ready, but utleys sayin he will be. so will donald take over for feliz after this year? im not so sure. i think hes a trade candidate.

i love drabek. even after the TJ, hes ranked this high after a short season. pretty awesome AND warranted, thats how high his skill level is. possible number 2 starter. ease up on donald, give drabek some love.

  7. A good year from Drabek puts him in the top 20 on this list next year and he’ll push for a spot next year in Philly. I would still rather see Donald in Philly all year as a super sub in training to play 3B next year but I don’t see much chance of it happening. The Phils won’t want to lose a year of controlling him later so they’ll bring him up mid year at some point after he hits .310 or so (again) at AAA. I’m definitely with the group that thinks Donald is undervalued. He’s a dirtball baseball player which will fit right in with this team. Spring training has started!! Mits popping, music to my ears.

  8. Hard for me to believe that Marson and Donald and Brown aren’t better prospects than a pitcher who has never pitched above A-ball, didn’t have dominating stats at that level, and is coming off of a major injury.

  9. Cardenas was switched to SS when he got traded to Oakland…that’s why he’s listed as such.

I’m surprised that BP would have Taylor over Brown, but not stunned.

  10. had the flu, once again the donald disrepect continues. as i said months ago their payroll would be 130. mil AND THEY WOULD SIGN HOWARD ! thank god. have no fear donald fans he will not be traded.if ruiz has a good offensive 1st half and happ is as good as i think he will be sit down now.since next year theyll be losing 20 mil in payroll and the a,s are out of it look for a marson and carrasco to oakland for holiday deal to surface.

  11. NEPP – I just found it odd he was moved to SS as I recall we had quite a bit of hand wringing on this site at where he could fit in the majors. I don’t recall SS being an option.

I personally wouldn’t count on Drabek in Philly until 2011 at the earliest.

It’s a rite of passage in spring training, naming the guys who came into camp in great shape. Myers, Howard, and now Carpenter. We’ll see if it translates.

  12. this is very interesting. on one hand it is good news. taylor could be a monster. he really seems poised to break out. #55 overall is a very good ranking for him. another year like last one and he is ticketed for a top 15 ranking. and the scouts must really love drabecks stuff. his upside is terrific. but to be in the top 100 in baseball after missing an entire year with an arm injury is a high compliment to his ceiling.

on another, it is a surprise that marson doesn’t get any love. the scouts must really hate that he doesn’t hit many homers. i don’t get it. power is one tool that clearly can improve with age. i don’t understand why there is such an emphasis on that for a 22 year old catcher who has amazing hand-eye coordination. to me, hand-eye coordination is much more valuable than occasionally getting a hold of one.

  13. also, brown and donald don’t surprise me.

brown is talented, but didn’t blow the doors off last year. a scout is justified to say they want to see him do it at a higher level.

donald doesn’t surprise me either. i think that he will be one of those guys who is consistently under rated. he isn’t a scout’s prospect. he is a gamer. scout’s don’t like guys like him. he doesn’t flash any “tools”. he just hits the ball and plays sound baseball. the perfect guy for philly.

  14. When they do these Top 100 prospects list, they are looking for players with very high ceilings that have at list a reasonable liklihood of attaining it. Off of last year’s stats, Michael Taylor has a really high upside. Dom Brown is on this list more for what he can possibly do because he hasn’t done it yet. Drabek is the beast though. If he stays healthy and improves as he should do, you’re looking at a #1 or 2 starter or possibly a closer and there just aren’t that many of them. While we all love Donald and Marson, their upside doesn’t project high enough for this type of list. That’s fine with me because I think they both have the ability to be 10 year starting players for a playoff caliber team and that is huge potential to me.

  15. Maybe the Sixth tool should be consistency Donald was .300 or over 4/5 months and .26x the other. Marson is almost as steady That is what the phils need right now and more speed
There are a lot of bad defensive catchers out there theif is a form of power

  16. i remember goldstein isnt a big cardenas fan especially at SS. likes him as a hitter but his range isnt all that. said he compares to red sox SS jed lowrie in that area. BA thought cardenas was a top 30 overall midseason and when doing the phillies prospect list said he would probably be #1 or #2 if he remained. so there is some differing opinions there

also does anyone see donald as trade bait? utley’s progressing health and signings of giles/cairo makes me think donald is a bit overrated due to his positional value and it would be time sell high. he’s 24 never has played above AA. getting a top pitching prospect like tillman, cahill, anderson, etc would be a nice return

  17. donald is worth much more than the most difficult position to trade for, a pitching prospect. by the way where would this prospect fit considering the rotation will be hamels myers blanton happ and carrasco in 2010, with drabek on the way. donald will be your 3rd baseman 2010 book it.as ive said before he reminds me of ryan zimmerman, but healthy.
