As posted in the Info Outpost, Jim Callis answered a bunch of Phillies questions today
Andrew(Philly): Was it necessary to take 2 weeks off before giving us the Phillies top 10. C’mon, we’re the World Series Champions. Couldn’t you have stopped before the Nationals. How about a little hint. Who is prospect #11?
SportsNation Jim Callis: (2:14 PM ET ) Prospect No. 11 for the Phillies? LHP Antonio Bastardo.
Pete (Philly): Michael Taylor of Dominic Brown?
SportsNation Jim Callis: (2:47 PM ET ) Brown.
Zac (Flemington, NJ): Have any insight on Julian Sampson? He was supposed to have nice stuff coming out of HS, yet his k-rate was alarmingly low this year in A ball. What does he throw and how does it grade out? What kind of ceiling does he have? Thanks.
SportsNation Jim Callis: (2:41 PM ET ) I still like him. He’s more of a groundball guy than a strikeout guy right now, but he has a nice sinker. He just needs to refine his slider and changeup.
Zac (Flemington, NJ): What do you know about Edgar Garcia? The Phillies continue to promote him aggresively, and he has always been very young for his league, yet his numbers have been pedestrian. Any thoughts?
SportsNation Jim Callis: (2:24 PM ET ) Promising young arm but not real polished yet. He needs a year to catch his breath, and then he might turn into a pretty decent prospect.
So Callis implying that Phils have been to aggressive with Garica. I also agree and would like a prospect to be age-appropriate rather than age-challenged, so that he develops confidence in his ability to dominate, to be conistsently pretty good, or a bit of both.

It seems Callis thinks more of Bastardo than we do…

BA seems higher on Bastardo than BP and KLaw

I have to admit to being a bit surprised by that. If anything, I would think BA would have Bastardo lower because he’s not very projectable and his numbers have been above and beyond his scouting reports.
Also, one more chat hit…
Scott (Philadelphia): Golson or Mayberry Jr.?
SportsNation Jim Callis: (2:50 PM ET ) I don’t love either. Golson’s tools are exciting, but his instincts are not good. I wouldn’t really want to have to count on either guy. I guess Mayberry if I had to pick.
Errr, not exactly a ringing endorsement, but it does reaffirm the collective wisdom that we made out alright in this deal.

On the chat hits thing MLBTR had one on yesterday , I think it was, on Jason Donald. They said he would have a high trade value, and speculated that he might be seen as more likely to be traded once Utley is back playing and firmly established in good health playingwise, something like that.

Julian Sampson was 11-4 as the youngest pitcher on the Lakewood roster. Next year he should improve his numbers as he will be able to use his best pitch (slider) again.

If Garcia ‘catches his breath’ during his age 21 season at AA we could have a nice starting pitching prospect on our hands. I’d say this is a make or break year for him. I’ll have to convince wifey to take a drive with me to go see him before the baby comes.

Don’t see that any 21-year old player faces a make or break season.

Nope, definitely not. Garcia should do much better repeating in AA though.

cheese maybe Donald has a high trade value because he is good and i wanna keep him PERIOD. Or Or we can plug in someone like Jenkins and spend millions and get (pick your favorite discards)

Make or break in the sense that some (as do I) still consider him a top-level prospect. If he doesn’t perform well this year I don’t think anyone can still make that claim.

Seeing Donald in Spring training, I liked his rangy, athletic type body. At the plate, his mannerisms spoke of Dale Murphy. I would rather see us keep him and see if he can help us in the near phuture. We can’t pay and keep everyone. Perhaps, Utley slides to 1b and Donald takes over 2b, when Howard’s contract status forces our hands??

Why would you move Utley off of second base? What makes him such an awesome player is that he plays great defense while putting up huge numbers. By taking him off a prime defensive position and moving to 1st you’re pretty much lowering his value.
LikeLike
Utley is far and away the best defensive 2B in baseball. You don’t move him until you have to.

Utley treats his body like a temple. The man is the phillies’ Brian Dawkins. He’ll be playing second for ten more years at a very high level.
Besides, a left handed first basemen who hits .300 with 30 HR’s and 100 RBI’s really isn’t that hard to come by.

It’s hard to say with a straight face, but Utley really is still underrated. He is a HOF player if these trends continue.

Utley’s stats are miles ahead of Cano offensively and especially defensively.
In 2008 Utley was +47 at 2B, meaning he made 47 more plays than the average MLB 2B. Cano was -16.
Not in the same galaxy.

I agree about not moving Utley, but he is certainly not “far and away” the best defensive 2b in baseball. I think he is very good, but he does not have the footwork and the arm strength nor release of Brandon Phillips. Utley had Dewan’s highest plus/minus rating, but Phillips won James’ Fielding Bible Award.

Utley might not be significantly better than Phillips, but he’s still one of the best in baseball…I would still advocate playing Donald a significant amount next year at 3b once Utley comes back. If he plays reasonably well, I’d look to move Rollins for pitching after next year, slide Donald to SS and sign a free agent 3B (it’s a pretty good year for free agents at that position).

It was pretty ridiculous giving the award to Phillips. Phillips was +17 in 1237 innings. Utley was +47 in 1395 innings. An extra 160 innings for Utley, as well as an extra +30.

I’ve been burned by enough sabermetric fielding stats not to put full faith into a single one.

I dont understand that stat PP . Cano has more assists then
Utley in less innings . Utley has a few more Putouts. Why would there be so great a +/- difference

+/- uses video analysis.
Assists, putouts and stats like that are meaningless. Even advanced stats like Revised Zone Rating are basic compared to Dewan’s +/-

You’d move Rollins for pitching?!? Okay.

And yet Utley has never won a Gold Glove…something that would greatly help his HoF case. Even though most of the voters think GG are completely a joke and a popularity contest, the guy who’s by far the best 2B in the league hasn’t even sniffed one yet…ridiculous.

Re: Cano and Utley. The Phillies had far more left handed pitchers than the Yankees. The left/right split of pitching tends to dictate opportunities for the infielders. Lefties give up balls hit to the right side, and vice versa. 37% of the Phillies’ innings were pitched by lefties, compared to just 18% for the Yankees. The Yankees likely simply saw far more opposing hitters hit the ball in Cano’s direction, hence the elevated assists total.

Catcher – Yadier Molina, St. Louis
Maybe his brothers are getting jealous; they’re creeping up on him. But it’s a repeat Fielding Bible Award for Yadier Molina in 2008 (88 points). Jose Molina finished tied for second with Jason Kendall of the Brewers this year at 63 points. With Bengie Molina placing eighth in the voting, it’s the first time any set of two brothers, much less three, have cracked the top ten in our Fielding Bible Award voting. That record may stand for quite some time.
Years ago Baseball Encylopedia listed most outfield putouts by league and all three DiMaggio brothers were listed along with Ashburn

Alan, I do not think you understand the basis of the +/- system. Cano was a minus 16 (also, the data for the number of attempts he had is also available, just not to me). So, even if your argument is accurate, and Cano had a few hundred less attempts because of the right handed nature of the Yankees pitching, it would have actually helped Cano. This is because he is a -16! The more attempts he would have had, the more plays he would have failed to make thus lowering his score in the eyes of +/-. In summary, Cano is a -16. -16 for crying out loud. -16. How in the world do you ever compare him to Utley. You might have an easier time convincing me that Howard is a finesse hitter.

It’s cool. To be clear, all I’m doing is explaining Cano’s elevated raw fielding statistics. He’s certainly not in Utley’s league as a fielder.

lets not pay a hof 1st baseman what hes worth and trade him for prospects, lets move a hof 2nd baseman to 1st or ss, lets trade a hof ss for pitching, and lets remember that donald is another brunlett.brilliant. on to another thing kudos to amaro and gillick, hes still involved, for not signing another pitcher thus blocking happ or carrasco. it seems pretty obvious that the 5th starter will be one of the two with park in case of failure which will not happen imo.but if anyone can give me a rational reason for ibanez at 3 for 30mil.over burrell for 2 for 20 i would appreciate it and please dont tell me werth will be a free agent. werth is going nowhere. i see it as a slap to brown and taylor.

Because they like Ibanez more than Burrell??? Plus, we have yet to see if Burrell was/is willing to take 2/$20.

Yeah, the Ibanez signing seems to be about cost certainty more than anything.

Can’t buy the cost certainty argument for Ibanez, since it is far from certain he will even play in his third season, requiring a replacement OF.
LikeLike
What evidence exists that it is “far from certain” that he will be unlikely to play in his 3rd season? He is no more of a risk than it is that Burrell is still playing the OF in 3 years.
Even with the age difference, Ibanez is in better physical shape right now than Burrell is..

I am not real happy with Ibanez thing either Allentown but he will have trade value as a Dh later if he continues to hit. So there probably will be a way out
