Phillies non-tender Scott Mathieson

Here you go.

Already signed a minor league deal. That works.

  1. Though it may be asking a lot, I hope Scott is able to regain his place as a righty for the big club’s staff…sometime soon, i’e, maybe in ’10?

He seems like a gritty guy. This will be his 2nd comeback from arm surgeries.

    I wish him LUCK!!

    Go, Scotty!

  2. These guys have incredible pressure on them. To get close
and get hurt is a sad part of the game (see Pat Bayliss who got to the Phils brink then never pitched again and was a victim of mental problems)
    Good luck Scott

  3. “Sorry Scott, we gotta let you go”

“But, but I’m still recovering from surgery and I need the medical benefits…”

“Don’t worry, we’re giving you a minorleague deal.”

    “Oh, okay then.”

  4. If this guy makes it all the back to what he was, that’s like getting a #1 draft choice out of college. Fast track to Phils by 2010. He will need 2009 to regain strength and command and work out the kinks.

  5. Someone said that the recovery rate for a second TJ surgery is only 30%, but that some guys (notably Doug Brocail) have shown that it can be done. If that’s true, let’s hope Mathieson is among that minority.

If he ever makes it back, I expect Scott to work exclusively out of the bullpen, at least at the major league level. And that wouldn’t be a bad thing; if we’re lucky enough for him to recover, he could wind up being a valuable late inning reliever.

  6. Mathieson was once our top pitching prospect. I think he is done. As is Segovia. Guys come back at high percentage from TJ, but apparently not Phillies guys. We’ll see what happens with Drabek. Something about the Phillies rehab regimen? IIRC Bayliss sued the Phillies for mishandling him when injured and bought an Olds dealership near Reading with winnings from suit.

  7. I know Scott fairly well, and he has a very strong work ethic. As far as I know he has done all of the right things to keep his comeback on track. NOthing but the best to him. I want to see him succeed.

  8. What is Mathieson’s projected return? Is he out for most of this year or will he likely return to the minors this upcomming season? I could see him as a big righthanded setup man for Lidge in the future.
