Fall League Update

Mesa lost two of their last three, with the Phillies prospects following the pattern of their hitters having some success and their pitchers continuing to struggle. Quintin Berry started 2 of the last 3 games in CF and was 2-10 with a double, RBI and was caught stealing. He is currently hitting .339. Tuffy Goosewich saw action behind the plate on Saturday and Monday, going 2-9 with 2 runs scored. He did have a passed ball in Mondays’ contest, and is hitting .286. Jeremy Slayden was in RF on Monday and Tuesday, going 2-9 with 2 runs, a double, and an RBI. His average in the Fall stands at .271. Finally, Jason Donald continued swinging a hot bat, playing in all three games and going 7-14, with 2 runs, a double, 2 homers, and 5 RBI’s. He was caught stealing on Saturday, a game in which he also committed an error playing second base. He played SS on Monday and 2B again on Tuesday.

The pitchers struggles continued. First, Tyson Brummett pitched both Saturday and Tuesday, going an inning in each, yielding a run on 2 hits, in his 2 innings of work. His ERA stands at 7.88. Andrew Carpenter started on Tuesday and went 3 innings, giving up 3 runs, on five hits. He walked 3 and struck out five. The runs came on 2 homers, and his Fall ERA stands at 5.29. Pat Overholt was rocked in relief on Tuesday giving up 5 runs on 4 hits, in his inning, skyrocketing his ERA to 6.75. Sergio Escalona did not fare much better going 2 innings and giving up 3 runs on 3 hits.

  1. Donald continues to rake, Berry a pleasant surprise, and Slayden is just solid at every level in which he plays. It’s a shame we’re lefty loaded at the top because he could be just as effective. I’d like to see them trade him just to give him a shot somewhere else. The pitching still looks ugly, but I’ve never liked Overholt or Brummett. Escalona still has some development and looks like the best prospect of the four. Carpenter, after a nice outing last week, does very very mediocre in this start. It’s a shame he’s so inconsistent. At this point, long relief seems the most likely destination for him in the pros. Still really excited about Donald in AZ, and Dom Brown in Hawaii. Man, can that kid play.

  2. Good for Brown! Though lacking any dingers. He still is making good progress. Loft needed.

Note Kissock. He is doing well in the Hawian Lg to go to Clwtr FSL in April and move up to Reading during the season.

Also seeing Drabek getting some innings in. He should start at Clwtr FSL in ’09 and move up to Reading during the season. Maybe be ready for the bigs in ’10…?

Don’t see Savery anywhere in winter lgs. I suppose he is busy strengthening his ar, over the winter. I still see him as deliverable to the bigs in ’10 if not before. Just in time for Moyer’s retirement.

How is Carrasco doing? I see him up to the bigs in ’09…maybe in April out of ST…but at least after 1/3 season at AAA.
And, what’sup with Mathieson? Will he be pitching in ST…and if so, will he be ready any time in ’09?

Video of Escalona, Slayden, and Donald. Very good quality. Escalona looks like a clone of J.C Romero. Video doesn’t show stuff, just his windup and delivery, maybe James could give some input on that. Donald has a nice, compact swing in his first AB, and got a nice hit on his third (I’m assuming it was a hit, looked like nice contact). Slayden definitly looked jumpy at the dish swinging first pitch a couple times. His swing looked a little long to me, Thoughts?

  6. Strong outing by Carrasco in picking up a win tonight. Very efficient. A 52 pitch, two hit, one run and 5 k game over 5 innings. After tonights game he took over the lead in strike outs in the VWL averaging a strike out an inning in his 5 starts.

  7. must i repeat myself for the 100th time. jason donald willnot be a good player he will be a star. he will not be traded he is the future of 3rd for the phils, and the future is now. just remember ryne sandberg. good to hear about the bright pitching of carrasco, when i saw him his fastball was good but he needed help on his number 2 any word. the phils will need a second ace to truly become a juggerknot. who starts hamels, myers, blanton, moyer, happ, carrasco.

  8. Let’s be cautious on the Jason Donald will be a star/Ryne Sandberg talk when he hasn’t had an at bat above Double A and, before the last two years, was considered fringe at best. Even now, many project him to be a superutility guy. While he has come a long way, he still has a long way to go. Ryne Sandbergs do not come along too often. Nevertheless, it is great to finally be enthusiastic and optimistic (and somewhat realistic) about more than one or two Phillies prospects and specifically, I am excited that he may be the 3B (or some other position) of the future.

  9. Does anyone here think we have the Prospects to aquire Matt Holliday? I was thinking Golson, Jaramillo and one of our young pitching prospects (Happ, Kendrick, Carrasco) are all expendable. I know everyone here is going to hate giving up one of these pitching prospects…but we have Myers, Hamels, Blanton and most likey Moyer coming back, and of all these prospects, the phillies will probably never be able to have all 3 of them in the rotation with Hamels, Myers and Blanton long term (I know there are some IFs there).

Anyone know what the Rockies are asking? Holliday would make a great 4 hitter to split up Utley/howard.

  11. macho, this is only my opinion. i have been watching bb for 50 years and besides stats there is something about a player that tells you star. you cant put it in a bottle and sometimes your wrong but in all humility most of the time my gut has been right. this kid donald is talented and gets his uniform dirty, call me crazy but if he is not in the as game in 3yrs., ill be surprised as hell. he is as untouhable as they come. p.s. moving an infielder to the outfield is not the way to go. dig this the phillies with donald at 3rd would in my opinion have the best infield in the history of bb, excluding of course the 75 reds.

  12. John — I get that. Like I said, it is good that we finally have real enthusiasm and optimism about some of our prospects. I’m just being cautious that’s all. Remember all the times we have heard various prospects are going to be stars, etc., that don’t pan out. The Ryne Sandbergs of the world are extremely rare. My point was only he did not have the pedigree (from scouts’ perspectives) and has not had any at bats above Double A, so before the Phils (and we) can truly begin to count on him, I think we need to see what he can do at Triple A, or at least spring training. I can only hope you are right. I would love for Donald to be able to be our 3B for the next 10+ years. It certainly looks like he can hit, based on his last two years and Arizona.

  17. Yeah, a borderline prospect OF, a AAAA catcher, a #5 and a #6/7 starter are WAY too much for an elite all-star outfielder….

  18. Wow, anyone who thinks giving up Golson, Jaramillo, Happ and Kendrick is too much for Matt Holliday is blinded by this site. Not a single one of those guys projects to be an above-average major league player, and I have my doubts as to whether Golson and Jaramillo will ever contribute anything to a ML team. Holliday is a multiple all-star OF. Even for just one year of him, the Rockies would laugh out loud if you offered that deal. Come on people.

  19. Agree NEPP, if you are looking to deal for Holliday it is going to cost more than a bunch of spare parts that the Phillies won’t mind losing.

Think more like 2 players from the group of Donald, Marson, Carrasco, Taylor, and 1 or 2 second tier players + around $100 million in new contract money unless you are looking for just a 1-year rental…

    Like

  20. I honestly don’t even want Holliday. He’s a fantastic player, but he’ll cost too much in prospects and $. If we’re looking to trade prospects, I’d rather target a young pitcher.

    Like

  21. I would agree it will cost more, but if Holliday will not immediately sign an extension, we can’t afford to give up too much (Marson, Carraco, Donald, etc.). I was not proposing the Golson, et al., deal, but I would be ok if any of those guys go, whether individually or in combination, in a Holliday deal as they are likely non-essential to the Phillies over the next 3 years. If we were to give up Marson and/or Carrasco, we better be signing Holliday long-term.

    Like

  22. Holiday for Golson Happ and Jaramillo. that’s is funny. Holiday would have to agree to a extension and then give them Galvis, Happ or Carrasco and Marson or Donald. He is worth it. They are looking for a catcher pitcher shortstop.

  23. It might be a better mid-season trade. Give whoever an opportunity to prove themselves in LF and if it doesn’t pan out, go for Holliday then. He should be cheaper(?duuno if this would be true??) if the Rockies arnt in the playoff hunt, and are just trying to unload him for anything before they lose him for good. It would also give the Phillies 4-5 months to negotiate a long term deal. I would give Goldson Jaramillo, Kendrick and Happ in a heartbeat too, if it meant holding on to Marson and Donald especially. Carrisco is good, but theres no telling where his ceiling is yet.

    Like

  24. We should only want Holiday for Marson or Carrasco if we can extend his contract and with Boras, that isn’t likely. We can’t get Holliday without giving up 2 top prospects. Neither Golson, Happ, or Jaramillo are top prospects. Other teams have scouts also….

  29. I love prospects as much as the next guy, but i’d have no problem giving up Carrasco in a package for Holliday- even if its for 1 year. Carrasco isn’t the next phillies 20 game winner- he’s a good arm, he’s got some nice potential- but it could be 4 seasons until he realizes that potential at the major league level. Trading prospects doesn’t hurt so much as long as you keep replenishing.

  32. there is no way i would trade victorino for holliday. i heard the same report on francesca. cf is the most valuable of position in bb. holliday is good but not worth top prospects. good hitting of,s are the easiest position to fill. no trades resign burrell.

  33. Without Victorino’s tremendous post-season the Phillies don’t win the World Series. He’s the player opponents love to hate, a thorn in their side on both sides of the ball. He’s a gamer and a winner with a bright future.

At the same time, Holliday is a beast who will win an MVP someday. The problem is the Phillies have no one who can replace Shane’s speed and defense and overall spark. Certainly not Golson or Watson or Berry. Not yet, anyway. Shane made CF look a lot easier than it is in winning his first Gold Glove. And he was a terror on the base paths.

Still, even up, you have to take Holliday over Shane and move Werth to center field. It all depends on who else is in the deal and how long you can lock up Holliday.

    Talk about a blockbuster!

  34. This was from Keith Law’s chat today:

Joe (Raleigh): Keith, From what I’ve heard, Jason Donald was exceptional in the AFL. Did you see him play? Does he have a future in Philly?

Keith Law: He could play 3b for them every day next year and probably give them above-average defense, but less bat than you want at the spot. That means that he may have more value to them in trade to a club that needs a ss or 2b. If I’m Ruben Amaro, that’s the guy I’m using to fill whatever needs I decide I have (another starter would be nice).

Can’t believe he still doesn’t like his bat. Obviously he isn’t going to be a 35 homer guy but i think 290 and 15 is plenty.

  36. Here’s some numbers on the vaunted Matt Holliday:

    Career Home/Away:

    Home: 1517 PA, 1353 AB, 84 HR, 307 RBI, .357 AVG, .423 OBP, 1.068 OPS

    Away: 1451 PA, 1303 AB, 44 HR 176 RBI, .280 AVG .348 OBP, .803 OPS

    2008 Home/Away:

    Home: 327 PA, 286 AB, 15 HR, 59 RBI, .332 AVG, .413 OBP, .997 OPS

    Away: 296 PA, 253 AB, 10 HR, 29 RBI, .308 AVG, .405 OBP, .892 OPS

As you can see Matt Holliday is not nearly as impressive on the road as he is in Coors. He is somewhat a creation of that thin Rocky Mountain air. He goes from being an MVP candidate to a good corner OF. He’s not worth what he’ll get on the open market.

    Here’s his CBP numbers:

    59 PA, 53 AB, 4 HR, 12 RBI, .283 AVG, .356 OBP, .547 SLG .903 OPS.

Pretty good but not spectacular. Not worth the amount of prospects it would take to acquire him.

    Like

  37. Matt Holliday will cost a crapload of money and he simply isn’t worth what Boras will get him on the FA market. He is not purely a creation of Coors Field but he is immensely helped by playing there. Holliday has alot of good going for him. He’s likely a .290, 25-30 HR, 90-100 RBI corner OF outside of Coors at his peak. He hits both righties and lefties pretty equally (he loses 30 points on his avg and 60 on his slugging against LHP but its still respectable…not Ryan Howard to say the least).

His age is also pretty good. He’ll be 29 in 2009 and theoretically in his peak. Most players (as you all know already) peak from 27-29 and Holliday’s stats have followed that curve pretty well. Right now, his best season (possibly his career year) was his age 27 season in 2007 where he posted an impressive 150 OPS+. He’s averaged a 142 OPS+ over the past 3 seasons but again Coors is heavily padding his numbers. Holliday WILL NOT earn the massive contract he ends up getting in 2010. He’ll be 30 and going into the decline phase of his career. Knowing Boras, Matty will likely get a 5-8 year deal that averages at least 20 million per…and that is ridiculous for a corner OF who is merely very good anywhere but Coors Field.

    Like

  38. Holiday is a one and done. He is also a Boras client. Please DO NOT give up Marson or Donald or Carasso for 1 year of this guy. It does not make long term sense. Lets not screw things up like we did after 1980.

  40. We’d save 67 Runs by replacing Burrell in LF…I assume that is more sarcasm. So you’d give a good IF prospect, a potential middle of the rotation starter and a throw-in for Holliday? That would likely get the deal done but its kills our salary structure and chances of resigning Howard/Hamels when that time comes. plus Vic, Werth and some others will all be FAs then too. Gets pretty expensive pretty quickly if you dont have guys like Donald and Carrasco to work for cheap.

  42. No your right I was wrong, we’d save about 80 runs defensively. Look it up man, Pat was -73!!! according to Bill James in LF, while Holliday was a +11. Okay we have a good IF prospect in Donald. Where is he going to play? We might as well use that chip for a superstar that will make us the favorites next year again. As for CC, the guy could be good but who knows? You have a great core, right here, right now, that Can win again in 2009, but you need to a have a right handed bat in that lineup. Pat probably isn’t coming back. Whether they sign Holliday beyond the 09 season is up in the air. I just don’t think you rest on your laurels because of an IF prospect that has nowhere to play and a “potential” 3-4 starter when you can win again in 2009. Just remember the Mets have that pretty new stadium and will be the Yankees of the NL soon enough.

    Like

  43. I think you’re misunderstanding Bill James +- system there. Its not plus and minus “Runs” but plus and minus “Plays” that the average fielder at that position would make and its based on the average for that year at that position. So its 31 more plays that Holliday makes that Burrell doesn’t…you’re only talking a few runs (maybe 10) total.

  49. We’ve got a lot of guys to pay. Can’t afford Holliday unless the Phills decide to really expand their budget (unlikely). In fact, I don’t think we really need to sign a big dollar guy to play left field. Pat Gillick showed that with the current line-up all you really need to do is plug holes. Sure Pat the Bat is a rather big hole to fill, but you don’t have to do it with one guy, or even get it done with one possition (LF).

I would suggest using Dobbs and Geoff Jenkins in LF. Maybe sign another flyer type guy to platoon with them, maybe a guy coming off injury and hope that he develops. If not, well Dobbs and Jenkins can still probably get the job done. Then plug Donald in at third. .290 and 15-20 is pretty nice. Bring Marson up to be the second catcher. His offense better than Coste’s. Will any one of these moves make up the void left by Pat B.? No, but the agregate might. These are all on base type guys (Dobbs not Jenkins). I think they would really complement the big bat-RBI machine of Ryan Howard and Chase Utley.

But hey, if we can steal a guy likeMcClouth then I’m all for it…Just no big money guys.

We were a team built on offense, but we tweaked it enough to get to the point where pitching became the thing that carried us. If you were to ask . . . if pitching would be the thing that would carry us, probably we wouldn’t have been that sure. We probably would have to bang them to win. Werth still hasn’t shown that he can hit right handed off speed pitches so you need to keep an option there which they have in Jenkins and Stairs. I agree that they shouldn’t trade major league ready talent for a one year rental. As for the talk about the Coors Field effect, lets’ all realize that CB plays smaller than Coors field. If I’m Boras, I want Holliday tarded to the Phillies because he would put up terrific stats in that lineup at that field. The challenge is whether the Phillies can get him for a reasonable price. Of course the Rockies start by asking for Vic or Weth plus top notch minor leaguers. They’re trying to set his value very high. The Phils will counter with a much lower package of Carpenter, Taylor, and Kendrick which will get turned down. Whether they find a common middle ground will determine if there’s a deal but I’m sure the Phils are Boras and Holliday’s #1 destination if they could choose.

It does??? Well that’s good to know. Other than being completely wrong, that’s a good statement. We could use all sorts of metrics but I believe Park Factor is the current favorite.

    2008:

    Coors – 107
    CBP – 103

    2007:

    Coors – 108
    CBP – 105

    2006:

    Coors – 109
    CBP – 105

    2005:

    Coors – 112
    CBP – 105

    2004:

    Coors – 113
    CBP – 105

So, no CBP does not play smaller than Coors. Coors also has huge open power alleys so alot of balls drop in that would be caught in CBP. CBP is a slight hitters park and Coors is an extreme hitters park.

the Arbuckle post which he had filled in Seattle. Alot of
the other guys moved up or stayed in place.
Just some news I might want to see some comments on.

  61. Great, Seattle. The place of crappy signings, terrible trades, and a ridiculously bad farm system.

  62. I believe article said Marty Wolever is staying in same
post. I believe there is some info on Mr. Looper et al.
on mlbtraderumors in the section dealing with the
guy from Milwaukee taking over as Seattle’s GM.

  63. Umm Rocky do you bother reading the articles?

“Dallas Green (senior advisor to the GM), Charley Kerfeld (special assistant to the GM), Gordon Lakey (director, Major League scouting), Steve Noworyta (director, Minor League operations) and Marti WOLEVER (director, scouting) are all remaining with the organization.”

Also Looper is one of Gillicks guys.

Lastly the M’s have developed some pretty good players through their farm. IE, King Felix, Brandon Morrow, Rowland-Smith, JJ Putz, etc. They have Jeff Clement, Aumont, & Triunfel still in the system. They gave up quite a good package for Erik Bedard, supposedly a package we couldn’t top. Adam Jones, Chris Tillman, George Sherrill and 2 others. It’s not exactly like they are the Pirates.

  64. B Do you read english. I mention one guy who by all the reports I have read is gone. Marti wolever who was behind the arbuckle draft refuse a new contract from montgomery. The scouting department is waiting for arbuckle to get a new job. That makes sense then they will guit. Not one person in the phillies scouting department was happy with arbuckle not getting the job, it makes sense to wait to leave to join arbuckle. you make it sound like seattle is the best farm system around. I hope you make all your great remarks when the guys start leaving .

  65. dphrey, i would fine any pitcher who throws a fastball to jenkins, 3 curveballs and hes out. you ruin your bench playing dobbs fulltime and as i said i believe mclouth is a lefty. if im wrong somebody tell me. we dont need utley, howard, and mclouth hitting 3,4,5.we need a rh bat somebody like burrell. would somebody tell amaro he doesnt have to make a ‘splace’. pay howard , the price of greatness, have donald platoon with feliz, marson platoon with ruiz sign burrell. release coste, jenkins bruntlett and use golson for defense and p running. the staff hamels, myers, blanton, moyer, happ. the pen carrasco durbin, eyre romero madson and lidge. whats so difficult. give howard 25 million per. thats what winners do. 7 yrs. hell be 36 with300 more hrs and 1000 rbis to add to his unprecedented numbers. would you pay stargell 25 mil. what would they tell scmitty sorry take your hof someplace else.

  66. john from philly history of giles-montgomery ownership . Yes they would let Scmitty walk. and say we are small market can’t afford him. Remember as I have said before they got major league baseball to give them money as a small market team. last year were thirteen in spending, but they won. one championship every 25 or 30 years is what to expect from these group.

  67. John please chech Burrell’s stat we did little against lefties and we won (7 hr). A ballplayer is a ball player ,Marson and Donald
pick up some slack they hit everybody. Leaves some ABs for
Golson or a new guy. The point is Holiday changes everything

I would lead off with McClouth at least at first . Rollins seems to have soured at times in front of Utley he will see great pitchs and your would have speed to burn the lousy defensive
catchers in the NL east. Brian McCann cs% .225 Ramon Castro .217,John Baker .167

  68. rocky i am more aware of the giles montgomery attitude than you can imagine, but if you believe it ay one time in the 70,s giles did what owens told him, i am only hoping that the principle owners finally see that 7 home playoff dates more than make up for payroll increases in accordance with performance and mainly were talking about buck, being flushed with victory. nowheels, adding another lefty to the lineup will only invite teams to stack lefties against the phils only further hurting howard and utley.

  69. I would personally go into next year with pretty much what we have. I’d resign Moyer & Eyre (both want to come back anyway and won’t cost too too much.) Try to avoid arbitration with Werth, Madson, Hamels, Howard, Dobbs. Madson is a horse that I would ride through 2009 and then let depart via free agency. He’ll be at least a Type B fee agent so they’ll get a comp pick from him anyway. I wouldn’t try to lock him up long term. Howard and Hamels I would try to lock up. Werth I would try to do something next year but I wouldnt overpay for him . Give Donald, Marson, and Carrasco a chance to make the team and look for a 2nd tier LF instead of overpaying for Burrell, trading for Holliday etc.

  70. If madson is not going to sign a new deal. then now is the time to unload him. he has value. Why wait and get a 2 round draft choice. One thing this team has been able to do is get bullpen guys. A Lot of them were other teams rejects and have done well under dubee. Eyre, Romano, Condrey, geary.

  71. I know ole Wayne made a bundle when the Marlins were in.
He doubled the parking fee (he gets parking, most of the concessions and club seats etc) That is one reason the Marlins didnt go after Manny. Millions and millions of dollars to the guy who has been tormenting them for year (read Norman Braman’s sueing for stop the use of public money for the new
    stadium etc)

  72. just a personal thought about madson, after they jerked this kid around for 3years between starting and relieving he finally has found a home as a ramiro mendoza or 8th inning man, just one of my favorites and yes relieving is fleeting. as far the revenue from the 7 home games in the series i would guess the average ticket cost was about 100.00 times 7 times 45,000 = 35,000,000 plus 25 for parking= 8,000,000 another 15,000,000 in food and anther 35,000,000 in concessions[ not based on the amount i spent, or i,d personally be paying howard], just a rough guess until i check forbes close to 100,000,000 profit.

  73. plus all the merchantice they are selling. On wip they said were doing over 160,000 per day. and they get 25 percent of that or better and plus what is sold through other outlets like modell and mlb. When you look at revenue at home games its about 60 percent they get and on the road 25 percent a lot of money. Even with raises not a big boost in payroll, this year. mabye from 103 to 120 they can afford it.

  74. They could easily take a payroll hit in ’09 with the playoff windfall… considering that they will lose $12 million in completely dead weight in ’10. Losing Eaton and Thome from the payroll will turn $120 million into $108… a perfectly manageable number.

I say they use this as an opportunity to sign a couple of guys long-term….. but they probably won’t.

  75. how about Myers 12 million, Jenkins 8 Felix 3 million ,Eaton 8.5 thome I thought was done this year. thirty one million off the books and replace maybe with Taylor at minimum Carrasco and happ less than a million.

  76. I thought the luxury tax was $160 million this season..could be wrong about that but I remember hearing that number on NESN (I live in New England). They could easily raise payroll next season and still make a bundle. They guaranteed a bunch of sellouts with that WS win and I don’t even want to think about how many season ticket packages (even those partial plans which a ton of people buy now) will be sold because of it. The Phillies can easily assume a 3 million plus attendance figure next year. They could easily lock up some guys but likely they won’t. Its up in the air as to whether we owe any money on Thome. Googling it has given me both “Yes” and “No” answers to it and we’ve been debating it at BL for a few days now. I tend to think we probably do owe something but its probably less than we’ve been paying the last few years (maybe $3 million due to his vesting option). All the money coming of the books will easily be replaced in deals/arbitration for Howard, Hamels, Werth, Vic, Madson etc.

Madson is gone after next year. If you go off the theory that we have an aging core (which is true) then it would make sense to keep Madson through next year and ride him until his arm falls off like the Brewers did with Sabathia. He then departs and we get a sandwich pick in return. If you trade him now you lose a vital cog in the bullpen. Now if you can trade him for a LF who bats for power and is righthanded (calling Jermaine Dye) then GO FOR IT. I’d much rather do something like that than empty our farm for Holliday…who I’ve already gone off on about on this site a few days back.

On another totally unrelated note: Great site James, I absolutely love having somewhere to talk about our minor leagues and trades. Thanks!

  78. on the subject of attendence the top 5 teams in attendence percentage were naturally boston 104%, chicago 99% detroit99% phillies 97% and the yankees 91%. its obvious there will not be a seat in the house hext year. look for the phils to go over 100%. and as far as happ goes i love his control. hes just off the plate enough that batters cant help but swing. take this the right way, he must have watched andy petitte quite a bit.

  80. ****Yes… we do still owe money on Thome. $5 million for ‘09 and then its done****

Isn’t that just wonderful? We’ll get to hear about that money when they’re explaining why they can’t sign anyone…”Well, we still have to pay Thome and Eaton of course”

  81. Reports on what is still owed Thome vary greatly. By most accounts I’ve seen, they still owe $1.5 million (half of his buyout) IF the WhiteSox don’t pick up the option. If the WhiteSox pick-up the option, the Phillies will owe nothing.
