Arizona Fall League

The Arizona Fall League gets under way tomorrow with the Phillies affiliate the Mesa Solar Sox, taking on Pheonix.  The Solar Sox have eight Phils prospects on their roster, a roster which they share with  the Braves, Cubs, Marlins, and Tigers.  Phils pitching prospects with the Solar Sox will be Tyson Brummett, Andrew Carpenter, Sergio Escalona, and Pat Overholt.  Lou Marson will see time behind the plate, and look for Jason Donald to see some time at 2B, SS, and 3B.  Both Jeremy Slayden and Quintin Berry have been asked to particpate and will see time in the Outfield. Look for updates at least once a week, and hopefully more during the AFL season.

  1. Slayden needs to step up his game. He’s not getting any younger and he needs to prove that his hit and power tools are for real.

  2. Slayden will almost certainly be a major leaguer – the question is, just what type of player will he be. The odds are that he’ll be another Jason Michaels. In the best case scenario, he’s a bit better than Greg Dobbs. I’m betting on a slightly improve version of Michaels – a right-handed version of Greg Dobbs who gets some playing time in the outfield and a lot of pinch hitting opportunities.

  3. That’s my view. Overholt and perhaps one of the other pitchers may make it (Carpenter may work his way up), but Marson and Donald are the big guns of this group and should be on the major league team within a year, if not sooner. Truthfully, I think Marson has a 50/50 chance to make the Phillies out of ST.

  4. From what I understand, I don’t think Marson will go to Arizona. He will be with big club until they are done and then most likely head to Florida.

  5. Escalona could be interesting. I know very little about him, and he doesn’t even have a link at the side of this side, but looking at the strikeout numbers he seems like someone worth keeping an eye on. He’s not very young at 24, but then again by LOOGY standards–if that’s his eventual calling–he probably has a good 5-7 years in the minors yet…

  6. Re: Slayden… he is indeed a lefthanded hitter, but he’s actually shown a reverse platoon split the last two years (e.g. .877 OPS vs. LHP and .825 OPS vs. RHP this year). Could indicate that he’ll develop into a decent PH and OF option regardless of whether a lefty or a righty is on the mound.

As for joe,Deptford’s question: individually, this collection of guys are a bunch of long shots to be solid MLB contributors. But I’d be shocked if 1 or 2 of them weren’t effective MLB players down the line (even if it’s not in red pinstripes). It’s possible that we’ll see the AFL guys in the following big league roles…

    Brummett: middle reliever
    Carpenter: set-up man / #5 starter
    Escalona: LOOGY
    Overholt: long reliever
    Slayden: 4th outfielder
Berry: 5th outfielder (defensive replacement / pinch runner)

No superstars in there, but definite, cost-controlled value. If even 2 of the above pan out, then that’s okay in my mind — after all, none of them (other than Marson and Donald, obviously) will even qualify as Top 20 prospects in the Phils system.

  7. Donald played third today. 0-4 at the plate (3 Fly Outs, 1 Ground Out).

  8. Looks like it was a slow day at the hot corner for Donald. Based on the recap he had no chances in 10 innings.

  9. Dom Briown is back in action in Hawaii. 2 for 3 yesterday. Taylor continues to struggle with an 0-2 with a BB but got picked off.

In Arizona, Slayden was 2-4 to start his Winter season. Brummett, Overholt and Escalona pitched yesterday but the box score wasn’t pretty for any of them.
