I’m in the process of preparing to move, and with that obviously comes a lot of other stuff. I was planning on writing the in depth draft recap starting next week, but I will be out of town from Tuesday through Saturday. I think the better course of action is to devote the following week to the draft. On Monday I’m going to roll out the “Phuture Phillies Player of the Year” feature, which is kind of what it sounds like, just my answer to the Phillies Paul Owens Award. I’ll give you my winner, and then 2 runners up for both position players and pitchers. Then I will be out of town, and when I get back, the draft is of prime focus. For today, in preparation for the PPPoY special, I thought I’d allow you to weigh in with your selections. Simply list them like

    Hitter was really tough because those guys had great years. Taylor had the best though albeit at a lower level.

    Pitcher was tough because no one really stuck out at all. Some solid years, but not one lights out year from anyone at the higher levels at least.

    Yikes, there’s really not a great choice here. I’ll go with Happ, but I don’t think there were any real standouts.
    Runner ups: Carrasco, Savery?

    Hitter of the year: Michael Taylor
    Runner up 1: Lounacy
    Runner up 2: Jason Donald

    The pitching was largely disappointing other than some of the half-year guys. I think the Taylor-Marson-Donald troika are easily the best 3, and since I believe that PotY should take into account level less than overall prospect ranking, Taylor gets the nod for his ridiculous season.

  14. Statistically speaking, it is a no-brainer who the best pitcher in the Minors has been this year: RJ Swindle
    Between AA and AAA he posted a 1.53 ERA, 67:8 K:BB, 53 IP with only 41 Hits and only 1 HR allowed (.212 Opponent BA),
    There were some decent numbers put up in the lower levels, but Swindle was doing it in the upper levels and on bad teams whose pitching staffs were often getting lit up.

    He also is still plenty young, seeing as he did not turn 25 until July 7, so any argument he is some old journeyman who should put up good numbers has no merit. He is 9 months younger than Happ.

  15. The point about Swindle is interesting. He is considered a journeyman type not because he is old but because he does not throw hard. That having been said, there have been a lot of players like Swindle who have enjoyed long and prosperous major league careers. Players like Doug Jones, Randy Jones and even Dan Quisenberry. Before he’s done, I think Swindle will pitch a lot of major league innings and they’d be foolish to let him slide to another team.

  17. I’d go with Carrasco as the pitcher. Really nice finish at AAA clinches it for me.

    Marson would be my position player. Hit really well at AA — which is supposed to be the big jump. Olympic performance is kinda a clincher in my view.

    Taylor was awesome but at a lower level than Marson. And Taylor is older as well.

    Obviously there aren’t too many wrong answers here as it depends on what criteria you use. I’m kinda looking at their prospect status so age and level and stuff comes into play more than pure stats.

    Who are past winners of the Paul Owens? It seems that Eude Brito won it one year. I think we’ve got some very fine candidates this season compared to others.

  18. Yeah, I guess striking out Carlos Delgado twice in the same game is not something the Phillies need from a sideshow act like Swindle.

  19. So how did Swindle do against the few righties he had to face again? Even a LOOGY has to be acceptable against righties because he WILL face them.

    Gotta give Marson the edge, since he’s playing a level higher at the same age while leading the Eastern League in OBP. Honorable mention goes to Dominic Brown.

    Nod goes to Happ for a more consistent season; Carrasco, while more talented, was up and down and struggled more than he probably should have in Double-A. As for the third spot… I’d hesitate to include any short season pitchers in something like this, so that eliminates Stutes, Worley, and Cisco (as good as they were). Savery was solid but unspectacular in his first full season, and all of the other SP prospects (Naylor, Carpenter, Garcia, Bastardo) struggled to some extent. If forced to choose a starter, I’d choose Bastardo, but otherwise, I’d use chapelhill90’s outside the box thinking and tab Swindle for the second runner-up spot.

  21. Swindle pitched 3 innings against the Mets, inexplicably facing 3 straight righties to start his MLB career. His 2nd and 3rd innings were 3up/3down, with a strikeoout of Wright and the second Delgado strikeout.
    However, if you are classifying him as a LOOGY, then by definition he should not be used in the manner suggested.

  22. I think the Phillies will pick Taylor and Stutes.

    I’m going to go with the guys I see as the top position and pitching prospects who had really good seasons.

    Among hitters, Marson is the youngest of the top guys and has advanced to the highest level. While he doesn’t have as flashy stats as Taylor, Taylor is a corner OF in A ball and 6 months older.

    So: 1)Marson 2)Taylor 3) Donald

    Among pitchers, I’ll go with Carrasco, still very young at AA and younger for AAA
    1)Carrasco 2)Happ 3)tie Bastardo and Stutes 4)Savery based on later starts

    Nepp, maybe Swindle won’t stick in the major leagues, but you know what? He isn’t the first player to struggle his first time called up. I think its too soon to write him off as a “sideshow act” and a failure.

  24. Okay okay…my comments on Swindle were a bit harsh but listening to everyone annoint him as the next great thing for the first couple months of the season got really annoying. He very well could catch on as a LOOGY somewhere (likely not in Philly as UC isn’t known for his chessmatch approach to pitching changes) but the odds are very heavily against him.

  26. i LOVE Taylor and might believe that he has a higher upside than Marson, but marson is a catcher and did it at a higher level. to me, he is the clear POY.

    as for the PP Cy Young, that is Carasco. If bastardo stayed healthy all year, he might have contended for this prize. happ also had a very good year.

  29. nepp93- I partially agree with you. While we shouldn’t look at Swindle as this great prospect and place him on our lists, we chould though acknoledge what he was doing in AAA, and the fact that he can do it and consistantly do it all year shows to me he has a legit shot at a big league team.

    I mean think Watson could have given us what Taguchi gave us this year if not more but no one is singing his praise and he did well on a really really bad team.

  31. Sorry I’m late to the ball…game. on the hitter side, It’s hard to be against Taylor or Marson. I’m wondering if Marson and Donald will be marked-down because they spent a month away at the Olympics. If not, I vote Marson #1, Taylor #2 and Donald, who had a great year, #3. If they are marked-down then Berry (50+ steals and a long hitting streak) might sneak in. Dom Brown deserves some votes but he lost time with an injury. Golson stepped up a this year but I can’t see putting him in the 1 -3 slot. Slayden had a very consistent year. I won’t put any of the short-season guys on here.

    On the pitcher side, I liked Carrasco and Happ but some of the write-ups made me look a little deeper. Swindle was very good this year. Matt German had a very good year. Sergio Escalona had a nice year at 2 levels (Low A and AA). I want to rate starters higher than relievers but maybe I shouldn’t do that. Relievers don’t give you 200 innings but they have to be ready every game. They often come into games when all the pressure’s been dumped on them. You have no time to get into a rhythm. You have to get it done NOW.

    My vote here is Happ, Carrasco and Swindle. Again, short-season and new draftees are just too hard for me at this point.
