The Reading Phillies have played their final game, thankfully. The Phils finished the season by losing 5 of 6, to drop their Eastern League Southern Division worst record to 53-89, 12 games behind 5th place Altoona. The season isn’t over for all of the Reading Phils, however, as both Golson and Marson have already been summoned to the big leagues. Hopefully, those two can help the actual Phils more than they helped the Reading Phils. Onto some player profiles…
Antonio Bastardo, one of the few bright spots on the Phillies roster over the past month, finish the season on a sour note. His final outing lasted 5 innings, in which he gave up 2 walks and 10 hits in route to 4 earned runs. He did have 5 strikeouts. Bastardo is sure to be back in the Reading rotation next year, hopefully leading a much improved Reading team.
Tyson Brummett, as usual, also got pounded in his final outing. His line, 6 innings pitched, 12 hits, 9 earned, 3 walks, and 2 strikeouts. Brummett has been a pretty big dissapointment. I am sure he is destined to join Bastardo in the Reading rotation next year, a year which promises to be make-or-break.
Edgar Garcia continued the bad starting pitching vibes, going allowing 7 hits, 1 walk, and 5 earned in 5.1 innings. He also struck out 4. Expect the young Garcia to join Bastardo and Brummett in ’09.
Jason Donald, one of the very few hitting prospects left at Reading, went 7-24 on the week with 1 2B and 6 BB. Could a september callup be in Donald’s future?
Finally, at least one Phillies prospect went out with a bang, Slayden went 7-11 with 3 2B, 1 HR, and 2 BB on the week. Hopefully, Slayden is due for a promotion to the ‘Pigs next year. Only time will tell.
Obviously, this is the last Reading Weekly Report of the year. I would just like to thank everybody for reading my little blurbs and for all of the insightful comments. Thanks, again.
Well, at least Reading will have a studly OFer next year in Taylor.

Living in Phillie is there any way to watch R-Phils games live or listen to radio broadcasts?

Thank you Neduolcaz—–
I have enjoyed reading your updates and appreciate the work you put in. I hope Slayden gets a shot next year—he can hit.

Neduolcaz: kudos for sticking with it this year. Despite preseason hopes, this was a brutal team to cover.
Just to echo what’s been said above… as far as prospects go, Garcia and Bastardo should be back next year, and they’ll be joined by Savery, Taylor, and Berry. Brummett and Gus Milner are some fringe guys to monitor, and it wouldn’t be out of the question for some other interesting guys to get promoted (Carlos Monasterios, Darren Byrd, and maybe even Chance Chapman).

Nice work Zac – it was a rough year, although Reading was 2-0 in games I went to, so maybe I need to attend some more games.
Let’s hope for a better year next year! Maybe at some point there will be a Berry, Brown and Taylor outfield. That would be exciting!

The guy who might be at reading fast is swimmer. He had some real good numbers. His strikeouts per inning were great. I would like to hear from someone who saw him pitch. I can only go off his numbers, firsthand knowledge is always better.

Any chance that this was Forbe’s last season managing in the Phillies organization. The guy has built quite a resume of failure over the past 5 seasons. Why the heck does a guy with the track record of Huppert get separated from the prospect-rich team he nurtured the prior two seasons and placed with the AAAA nonprospects at LV?
