Per the Phillies official site.
Right-hander Adam Eaton and left-hander J.A. Happ were recalled from triple-A Lehigh Valley and outfielder Greg Golson and catcher Lou Marson had their contracts purchased from double-A Reading.
Somewhat surprising that they brought up Marson and not Jaramillo. Gordon and Rosario were moved to the 60 day DL to make room.
Eaton?!?
~sighs~
Why? Other than a pinch runner in the 19th inning what purpose does he serve? I understand the urge to get your money’s worth out of him but come on, he couldn’t get AA guys out.

I honestly think this was just to fulfill a promise that the IDIOT front office made to Eaton that he would recalled. He better not get into any meaningful game !! The Donald snub is suprising. Hitting .310 with lots of X base hits and a good base runner. Maybe he will be added tomorrow. Also suprised they didnt bring up Carassco. It couldin’t hurt to have 94mph coming out of the pen.

I don’t think the donald sub is surprising at all. Front office has said I believe that they don’t view im as more than a utility guy. At this point, not saying I agree, but they probably view him as the same as Eric Bruntlett.

The funny thing is Gillick is making it obvious that the only reason he brought up Eaton was because he told him he would be brought up now when he originally sent him down. They had his comment on it featured on Phillies.com. The only way he gets in a game will be if they are getting blown out or they are out of the playoff run.

Thats obviously the right thing to do about Eaton. I mean lets face it, he sucks! Hes 0-5 with a 7 ERA in the minors.
As for Jaramillo, I hope he does get traded this winter or gets a shot with the big league team. I like the kid a lot, and I think he might turn into something better than a backup catcher.

Why are the phillies sending Jeremy Slayden to the afl. It doesn’t make any sense to send a non prospect. To a league for almost ready players, and younger players who need to get more experience. Slayden is twenty-six, Had arm surgery is slow runner. can only play leftfield according to scouting and doesn’t possess major league bat.

Gotta feel for Jaramillo. He struck out three time tonight after the let down. But hard to call up a catcher in his second year at AAA who has committed 16 errors and has 9 passed balls this year. In one of the games Myers started there he had 3 errors. That might have sealed his fate.

Good on the Phils for doing the right thing with Golson and Marson, who each have to be put on the 40-man anyway. Disappointing not to see Donald, but you can understand from a purely functional perspective, i.e. the other two could serve important functions — Golson as a pinch runner and defensive replacement, Marson as the third catcher — but Donald can really only be a pinch hitter (since, let’s face it, he’s not playing anywhere but SS for right now).
And don’t you have to think Jaramillo, Carpenter, Cervenak, Swindle, Bohn, and Harman could still come up after Lehigh Valley and Reading finish up their respective seasons tomorrow? They’re already on the 40-man roster and will burn options next year regardless, so there’s no downside, right?

Downside to the ownership would be that each would draw a ML salary for one month.

Jeremy Slayden has hit on every level he’s been at. Granted, he’s been a bit old for each level, but no reason to believe that he can’t be a viable bench bat for the Phillies.
And quite frankly, I feel he’d provide not much worse production than Jenkins at a fraction of the price.
Obviously they are sending Slayden to the AFL to see if they’ve got someone that they ultimlatey want to hang on to. He’s had a .830+OPS at every stop he’s been at. Not bad, if you ask me.
Definitely someone I’d consider having on my bench.

The reason Marson and Golson were added early is that you have to be on the 40 man roster by 8/31 in order to be eligible for the playoff roster. With the DL rule in place, if Ruiz or Coste were injured and DL’ed, Marson would be able to replace one of them. Same with Golson being able to be added. Once Lehigh Valley’s season ends, I assume Cervanek, Harman, Swindle, and Jaramillo will all get recalled.

I am surprised that the Phillies would bump Marson over Jaramillo. I think it’s the best move, but at the same time, I thought the Phillies would showcase Jaramillo for an off season trade. I saw him make a bunch of errors and bad throws, and clearly Marson is the catcher of the future now. He did improve his offensive numbers but it was too little too late.
Golson I agree with, and he can be Burrell’s pinch runner. I hate seeing Eaton come back but that was part of the deal.

Goslon will help as a pinch runner and defense and maybe extra innings, but I’d rather not see him with more than three or four AB a week. Pinch hitting is not his role. He still gives away too many AB. More strikeouts is the last thing this lineup needs. When Burrell reaches late in the game, you pinch run Golson. Or use him as a defensive replacement on a double switch.
Marson will make a good pinch hitter. He’ll take a walk and ML vets will nibble with a rookie and Marson won’t take the bait. He’ll make the pitcher come to him or walk him, which is exactly what the lineup needs. You could even pinch run Golson when Marson takes that walk.
Happ gets another chance to impress. He could be a difference maker.
Eaton. Mop up duty. No close games. Please. He should do nothing but bunt for 60 hours a week and just get good at that. Be a bunt assassin.
Maybe Golson should just do the same thing – obsess about bunting. He could raise his whole game to another level just by bunting better. It might inspire Victorino and Rollins to chip in, drag bunting for base hits, moving runners and getting on. The Phillies should run a bunting clinic the same way Davey Lopes has them running a base stealing clinic. Golson should swipe a few bags down the stretch as well, and make a few great plays in the field. If he could just find a way to reach base more often…
If Manuel uses these guys properly, the Phillies will be much better off.
But they will only fall back if he misuses them by giving Eaton key innings, using Happ haphazardly, giving Golson too many ABs, and neglecting Marson’s knack for reaching base.

hitting 97mph, he never threw that hard with phillies
definitely a hot gun
Sacramento manager Todd Steverson was impressed with Outman in his brief time here; Outman worked in five games and went 1-0 with a 1.76 ERA, giving up nine hits in 15 1/3 innings. He’ll be adding some depth to the A’s bullpen. Steverson said Outman was hitting 97 mph and worked in the mid-90s consistently.
Outman, 23, is yet another product of a recent deal to reach the big leagues this season. He came over in the July trade that sent Joe Blanton to the Phillies.

Personally I think the first batch of moves was mind boggling. Especially the catching situation. I dont understand how you call up a guy from Double-A (Marson) and expect him to be better than a guy that put his time at Triple A all year long, for the SECOND year. Two Time All-Star, Fall league all-star, part of a GOLD medalist Olympic team. How much more do you need from this guy? I mean its like a slap in the face for Jaramillo. I feel for ya out there buddy. Phillies put Marson on a pedistal after good season. It’s not time for the Marson Era or whatever else lets play some ball and look at the better approach a switch hitting catching with excellent defensive skills. No doubting at all that Marson is worthy but to not give the kid a shot whos been busting his ass all year long in Triple A… Tell phillies to tell Marson to put his time in at Triple A and do work there prove yourself with THAT level of competition then get promoted the RIGHT way. Unbeleivable.. wow.

Everyone talks about what the Phillies gave up for Blanton. And people on here moan-and-groan over-and-over-and-over. And to be honest, the only reason you follow these other guys’ stats is to say “told you so”.
Blanton has been a very good pick-up for the Phillies. And he’s controlled for a few more years at a very cheap price. The Phillies paid a good amount to get him, but get over yourself if you still think that Blanton is a worthless ML pitcher.
Quite frankly, that type of attitude is ruining the discussion around here. Let’s talk about what the Phillies’ Player Development system HAS DONE this year. Not who they traded and how we feel like it’s the worst trade of all time. It gets really, really, really old after awhile.

I’m someone that would like to see the Phils give someone within the system a chance more often than trade prospects for a rental. That said, in the position that the Phillies were in with Eaton and Benson and Myers in the minors, I think the Blanton trade was a very good one and much needed. I would have liked to have seen Happ given a chance, but not knowing that Myers would come on so strong it’s hard to fault managements thinking here.
I do have a problem with trading prospects away when someone like Jeremy Slayden, Jason Donald or Andrew Carpenter could fill the 5th outfielder, 3rd shortstop or 14th reliever positions.

simple answer, he wasn’t the best player available. making the mlb roster isn’t a right. it is a privilege. If he was good enough, he would have been called up. If he doesn’t like it, tough s**t. work harder. The phils are in a pennant race. The goal is to win games. Not throw someone a bone for working hard.

Some time during the final six games against the Braves and the Nats at CBP he said would I be OK with Marson turning the lineup over hitting out of the 8 hole and Charlie batting Golson 7th in order not to pressure him with an outfield of Werth in left, Golson in center and Vic back in right. I said heck YES, thanked Jr. for checking in and went back to sleep.

They alternated (at least in this olympics) game by game so it was the luck of the draw as to how it worked out. As far as Teagarden’s stats, Marson’s blew them out of the water (albeit a small sample size). Lou’s .308 avg was third on the entire team (Donald and Tiffee) and his OBP was second behind Donald’s.
I’d expect also that Jaramillo was alternated game by game so it would be the luck of the draw. Don’t get me wrong, I like Jaramillo a lot but the point is, I like Marson more and to take that point further i think D’Arnaud could be better than both if he can hit with power from the catcher position and continue to develop but he’s way too young to classify in this conversation.

Wow this thread really went ape bleep! I have to agree that JJ should have been the call-up having said that I think Lou projects ahead of him. In addition offense out of the catcher position is not of concern to me down the stretch.
Pitching and the big 3 are going to dictate whether or not they repeat as NL East Champs. I said a week ago that Happ and Carrasco should be called up for exactly what happened yesterday. At the first sign of trouble with Kendrick or Moyer I’m going to the off arm. This team in it’s current offensive state can’t afford to get down more then 4 runs.
Whoever said Golson doesn’t have big league talent needs to have their head examined. .280 at AA is nothing to sneeze at when you can run throw and play the quality defense he does. OK he strikes out so what. He’s low risk high reward at this point.
The system as it stands is in a good place the F/O needs to be more aggressive with it’s young players that’s all.

Ok, I’ve been following baseball for years, and even visit all of our minor league parks so I feel stupid asking this. Why do they have to “purchase the contracts” of some minor league players like Marson and Golson, but not of others?

I think the verbiage of “purchasing contracts” has to do with guys not on the 40-man as of yet. Marson and Golson were not on the 40, so they had to purchase the contracts in order to put them on the roster. Once on, I think they can just be recalled/optioned. More of a technical thing than anything else.

Rick,
Purchasing the contract is the formal procedure of moving a player from a minor league reserve list to the major league 40-man roster. It is part of the agreement between the minor leagues and the major leagues.
When that player is on the 40-man roster, he is actually part of the major league club. If they do not need him as part of the 25 man roster, he is then sent to the minors by optionial assignment to the minors (option) and when the major league club wants him back they “recall” him. Even when he is in the minors on options he is still part of the major league club.
