Williamsport
The Crosscutters finished the week 2-2 after having the first three days off for the All-Star Break. They remain one game over .500 at 31-30, which leaves them in a tie for third place in the NYP Pinckney division, 7.5 GB of Batavia.
Game recaps –
8/19 – On Tuesday night the NYPL held their annual All-Star Game pitting players from NL affiliates against players from AL affiliates. It was not a pretty night for those players representing the Phillies. Brian Rosenberg pitched one inning, allowing three runs on four hits and a walk. Steve Susdorf was 0-2 with two strikeouts. Troy Hanzawa had the lone positive by drawing a walk in his only plate appearance.
8/21 – Williamsport defeats Auburn 6-2. Kyle Drabek got his first start for the Crosscutters and picked up where he left off in Florida. He pitched 4.1 innings, allowing an unearned run on one hit and three walks while striking out five. Jordan Ellis got the win in relief, going 2.2 innings, allowing two hits and a walk while striking out three. Michael Schwimer allowed two hits and struck out one in his inning of work. Six different players had a hit with Jim Murphy, Bryan Few, Scott Thomas and Tim Binkoski picking up RBIs.
8/22 – Williamsport defeats Auburn 9-1. Tyler Cloyd went six innings, allowing one run on three hits and three walks while striking out three. Sean Grieve picked up the three inning save, allowing only one hit and striking out three. Susdorf was 1-3 with 2 BB and 2 RBIs. Cody Overbeck was 2-5 with a 2B, 2 RBI and a run scored. Murphy was 2-4 and Hanzawa was 2-5.
8/23 – Batavia defeats Williamsport 4-3 in 12 innings. Freddy Ballestas got the start and went four innings, surrendering only two hits and a walk while striking out six. Miguel Matos allowed three runs, two earned, on three hits in 2.2 IP. He struck out three. Rosenberg bounced back from the his poor ASG with 2.1 innings of solid work. He allowed one hit and one walk while striking out three. Schwimer took the loss, allowing an unearned run in 2.1 IP on two hits and a walk. He also struck out three. Susdorf was 2-4 with 2 2B and 2 RBI. D’Arby Myers was 1-5 with a BB and two runs. Hanzawa was 2-4 with a BB while Overbeck went 0-3 but added a BB and an RBI.
8/24 – Batavia defeats Williamsport 4-3. Jacob Diekman had a solid start for the Crosscutters, going seven shutout innings and allowing only three hits and four walks while striking out six. Unfortunately Jesse Oster allowed four runs in the 8th inning to lose the game. Susdorf was 1-3 with 2 RBI. Hanzawa was 1-4 with a 2B and a run scored while Myers was 0-2 with 2 BB.
GCL
The Phillies went 1-2 in a week that saw the inclement weather passing through Florida wash out multiple games. At 32-22 they still lead the North division by four games over the Yankees. The team only has four games left (excluding any possible make-ups) so it appears they will be the only affiliate to reach the post-season.
Game recaps –
8/18 – Blue Jays defeat the Phillies 8-3. Reginal Simon got the start and allowed four runs on seven hits and two walks in only three innings. He also struck out two. Julio Rodriguez went two innings, striking out one and hitting two batters. Mike Bolsenbroek allowed two unearned runs on two hits in one inning while striking out one. Leandro Castro was 1-4, as was Sebastian Valle who also added a run. Harold Garcia was 1-1 with a 2B, BB and run scored. Zach Collier was 0-3 with a BB and Anthony Hewitt was 0-4 with 3 K.
8/20 – Phillies defeat the Indians 10-3. Yohan Flande got the win, allowing two runs on four hits and a walk in five innings while striking out seven. Mauricio Romero allowed two hits in two inning and struck out four. Chad Poe allowed a run on two hits and a walk in his one inning. He also struck out one. Leandro Castro was 2-5 with a HR (3), 3 RBI and 2 runs. Vladimir De Los Santos was 2-5 with a 3B, 2 RBI and 2 runs. Jeremy Hamilton was 2-3 with a BB, RBI and run. Collier was 0-3 with a BB, RBI, and run while Hewitt was 1-5 with a run and 3 K.
8/21 – Yankees defeat the Phillies 4-1. Spencer Arroyo pitched six innings, allowing three runs on seven hits and a walk. He struck out only one batter. Nathan Fike followed and allowed a run on three hits and two walks in 1.2 IP while striking out a batter as well. De Los Santos provided the offense with his 9th HR. Collier added a double while Hamilton and Garcia each added a hit.
Good news on Drabek; I hope that this is the beginning of a relatively quick rise through the system without further physical problems.
Hopefully, Myers & Hewitt will turn it on next year.
What are you thoughts on Vladimir De Los Santos now? He appears to have good power and room to put some weight on. I like both him and Garcia but do you think that they may be a little too old to be considered true prospects?
Any news on Gose?
Knapp, Valle, Collier & Castro certainly appear to be solid prospects!
Between the 2 teams there are MANY prospects, partially due to a G R E A T draft this year.

After watching the tape of Gose pitching. I really hope he is being converted.

They’ll give him a chance as an OF…at least 2 years. They essentially promised him that upon signing. Gose is only 18 so losing 2 years of development won’t hurt him as a pitcher…it would actually shield his arm during his maturation and likely decrease his chances of a major arm injury.
Drabek looked good.

Boy, Hewitt is a strikeout machine. His confidence must be rock bottom at this point. I’m surprised they keep throwing him out there.
As for Williamsport, Overbeck and Susdorf still continue to be churning out rbis. It’ll be interesting to see how those two pan out. Ditto for Hamilton, who I suspect could still have a decent future despite struggling enough to get demoted.

Why would berg be pitching at GCL at twenty three years old. Is this the old orgization filler. I hate that phrase.

Hamilton was struggling with the transition to wooden bats…he’ll probalby be better next year after a whole winter to concentrate on that.

I am really getting exciting about all these pitching prospects we got going. Kyle Drabek’s return has been an absolute dream. Are there any reports on his velocity? I’ve heard it can increase after TJ rehab like with Mathieson throwing like 98 last year (im not sure if he could do that before). and Julian Sampson is just doing well. I dont understand that GCL because Jason Knapp hasnt pitched since the 12th. is he in a different league or are they protecting his gem of an arm? i feel like the phillies havent had a good starter consistently throw in the mid 90s since Schil.

Mathieson consistently threw in the 93-96/97 range. He could crank it up to 98-101 if he needed to blow someone completely away. I saw him do it in multiple parks, in person and on TV in minors. We need this guy back healthy. He may be on eof the best talents we have had in terms of velocity and personal makeup (INTENSE competitor like Myres, but intelligent and emotionally mature). His only drawbck are his breaking pitches, which are only OK. But Billy Wagner made a career out of that formula.

interesting to see Jesus Sanchez made his pitching debut today.. pitched one scoreless inning for GCL phils. maybe we still can get something from the Abreu trade..

Switch hitting second baseman Harold Garcia was 3 for 5 today and is now third in the GCL in OPS and a great OPS against righthanders. Looks like the switch hitters Galvis and Garcia will be the future up the middle.

Rickey Branch. Garcia is a twenty two year old. Playing against organization fillers and high school kids in the lowest league. And you have him starting for the phillies. And remember a lot of these kids from the islands lie about there age.

Cisco has been a surprise. One earned run and no walks in 28 innings in low A. At 5-11, he’s going to have to prove himself at every level. His parents were both athletes at Winthrop. His dad pitched and his mom played basketball.

all i got to say is i hope they convinced gose to become a pitcher and thats why he hasn’t played in a month and a half

Bigptitan123, I hope so too, but I wouldn’t count on it. It may have been posturing at the time, but he sounded like he really didn’t like pitching. Remember, this guy has some projection at the plate too. It’s not a bad thing if: 1) he has mild success as a hitter and hence it takes a couple of years to switch to pitching; or 2) He becomes a MLB-caliber leadoff guy (which is his ceiling).
That being said, I have no idea why he hasn’t been playing. Anyone down in FL have an idea?

Can the GCL Phillies make it three years in row that Phils a farm team wins a league Championship? They better because no other farm will make it to post season. The big best of three series opens today with the GCL Nationals. Looks like it will up to the Garcia’s, Valle’s, De Los Santo’s, Castro’s and Castillo’s of the world to bring home the 08 GCL pennant and save the honor of the Farm system. The big Caribbean scouting budget is finally starting to pay huge dividends. Anthony Hewitt ? We’ll that another story but he only struck once yesterday going 0 for 5 as the Phils eliminated the GCL Pirates in a one game semi final to make it to the best of three finals for all the GCL marbles. Who says the Phils organization can’t make it to post season!

Looking good for the GCL Phils after 1 inning as Sabastian Valle blasted a 2 run homer to get the Phils off to a 3-0 lead in the first innings in the rubber game of the best of 3 finals against the Nats for the GCL flag.

Reginal Simon pitching well after a rough 1st inning. This would be a nice confidence boost for an 18-year-old.
Interesting, Hewitt isn’t playing.

Nice to see a couple of 18 year olds Valle, a homer, and Simon, a 2 hitter after 5 innings, coming up big with the GCL Championship on the line.
