The GCL Phillies continued their fine season by going 4-1 before rain washed out Friday and Saturday’s games. Their record stands at 27-15 which is good for first place in the GCL North. The second place Braves are 6 GB. Depending on the games they make up, it looks they will play 18 more times this season and, barring a Mets-type collapse, will continue on to the playoffs.

Boy, I have been very impressed with these young pitchers to date! Time will tell.
What are your thoughts on Vladimir De Los Santos? He is showing good power for a guy that weighs less than 180 lbs.

Good to see Drabek continuing to look good.

What strikes me about the college arms is that most all of them throw really hard but outside of that, they all had deficiencies as college pitchers. I guess the Phillies felt they could harness the stuff and teach them the secondary pitches. But this is smart if they are eventually going to turn a few of these guys into power relievers. You don’t need command of 4 pitches to be an effective reliever. 95 mph fastball and hard slider will do the trick.

I’d rather have a guy who can throw hard and have to teach him how to throw breaking stuff rather than a guy who can hit his spots but has an 88 mph FB. One can be taught…the other can’t be.

what’s the story on harold garcia? he’s a little bit old for the gcl in that he’s almost 22, but he’s also been pretty quietly putting up some really solid numbers for a middle infielder. given his age, harman’s struggles this year, and the fact that cardenas is no longer in the system, i’d have to think that if he keeps up his current rate of production (.409 OBP, .529 SLG) he should start next year at lakewood.

D’arby Myers has been hitting well lately.

I love the idea of getting guys who throw hard and teaching them to pitch. Throwing hard = big upside. This is very good news.

Not a GCL or Williamsport thing, but Mattair had a nice July and seems to be hanging in there in August. If he can put two solid months together back-to-back he could start next year at Clearwater. I understand that his fielding needs work, but he’s 19 in low-A ball and has shown improvement.

Does anybody know when the NYPL all-stars will be announced? I have tickets to the game next week and I’m hoping to catch more than a few Williamsport prospects in person.

I feel like I keep repeating myself, but I’m just impressed by the sheer number of 2008 college pitching draftees who have been successful thus far. Worley and Stutes should stick as starters, at least the time being; Rosenberg and Schwimer look like potential set-up men; and McConnell, Grieve, Noles, Bergh, Ellis, and Cisco all have a shot to be middle relievers. Four of the above have already made it to Lakewood, which is encouraging. Next year’s Lakewood squad could be packed with relievers who could move quickly if they hit the ground running.
And I know he didn’t pitch this week, but I’m excited to see what Kyle Slate does going forward. I know he’s 19 in the GCL, but he’s got a projectable body, good command (17:1 K:BB), and allegedly throws a splitter as his bread-and-butter pitch.
Finally, one more GCL point: what in the world is going on with Jeremy Hamilton? I suppose he’s in the GCL to get regular at bats, but it’s disappointing to see a polished college bat like that demoted to the GCL. Hopefully he’ll take this opportunity to get comfortable with the wood bat and bounce back strong at Lakewood next year.

The ASG is August 19th, so I’d imagine very soon.

Slate threw today. didnt have a great outing but it is the GCL so there will be some ups an downs. From what i have heard his “bread an butter pitch” is his change up. His fastball velocity is average but commands very well. Im interested to see what happens with him next season
