Predictions for the Arizona Fall League?

9. Winter Leagues

The rosters were announced at the end of August last year, and the Phillies sent 9 guys; Bisenius, Happ, Outman, Mathieson, Savery, Marson, Golson, and Costanzo. Reminder on eligibility, for those who are unfamiliar with the process;

Each Major League organization is required to provide six players subject to the following requirements:

  • All Triple-A and Double-A players are eligible, provided the players are on at least a Double-A level roster no later than Aug. 1.
  • One player below the Double-A level is allowed per Major League team.
  • One foreign player is allowed, as long as the player does not reside in a country that participates in winter ball, as part of the Caribbean Confederation or the Australian winter league.
  • No players with more than one year of credited Major League service as of August 31 are eligible, except a team may select one player picked in the most recently concluded Major League Rule 5 Draft.
  • To be eligible, players on Minor League disabled lists must be activated at least 45 days before the conclusion of their respective seasons.

So. Donald, Marson, Happ, Carrasco, Garcia and then maybe Savery again? I believe some teams end up sending fewer than 6 and then other teams send more, as the Phillies did last year. Any other suggestions?

  1. I thought the Phillies wanted to send fewer Ps to save their arms. I don’t see Savery, Carrasco or Garcia. Maybe Happ to try relief. Donald and Marson for sure, maybe even to try Donald at 3B. I can see Golson, maybe Taylor or Brown. Maybe even Worley.

  4. I suppose a rehab wouldn’t be stretched out into AFL? ala Drabek.

    The first time I saw Chase Utley play was in the AFL. It’s a really fun trip if you ever get the chance.

  5. Aren’t Garcia AND Carrasco both foreign born?

    So, that in mind, I say –
    Garcia (FB), Marson, Donald, Taylor (under AA), Happ, Bisensus

  7. Taylor seems like a logical choice. Probably Marson and Donald too. Maybe Golson again. And probably a pitcher or two that don’t necessarily rank as top prospects–Brummett, maybe Carpenter. I’d like to see Harman go, but I guess as an Aussie he wouldn’t be eligible.

  8. I hope that the Phillies, send players that can use, the time to break-out, and intensely work on Major parts of their games.

    I believe the rest should Rest. Marson, and Donald, and Carrasco should rest.

  10. I don’t think either Carrasco or Garcia are eligible as both players are from countries that have winter leagues. Also, Savery in his journal indicated that he was going to instructional league so that doesn’t sound like a return to AFL for him. I’ll go with

    Michael Taylor – the one below AA player
    Tyson Brummett
    Andrew Carpenter
    Sam Walls
    Brett Harker
    Clay Harris

    …after the Reading season, the futures game and the Olympics I suspect they just let Donald and Marson rest.

  11. For a team that will need a right handed hitter who plays left Michael Taylor would be a good selecton for the under AA player. He is hitting .381 in his last 10 games at Clearwater and would seem well suited for the AFL.

  12. If he continues his current pace, I would send Stutes as the below double A representative to see how he fares against top competition.

  13. Golson – continue to feed him at-bats
    Donald – a little 3b experiment
    Carpenter – could use a few more innings
    Brummett – see Carpenter
    Taylor – A level prospect who might respond to the extra challenge
    Marson – Most logical choice but don’t know if they want him catching that many innings in one season.

    Eaton – Seems to be coming around at AA as a prospect and could use the innings. (ok, just kidding)

Golson (it’s amazing that we still don’t really know about him – the more experience he gets the better), Harman (really needs ABs as his little trip to Philly sent his development back like 3 months – he’s just now starting to click into gear), Savery (DH?), Marson, Donald, and Taylor. I would leave out Happ (he’s graduated in my view – sending him to AFL is like a demotion), Garcia (he’s young and could use the rest – why burn out his arm at this age?), and Bisenius (what did he do to get to go to this league? What a disappointment.). I also wouldn’t mind seeing Carpenter but, frankly, I have very dim hopes for him.

  19. I hope they rest Marson and Donald

    and send Taylor, i think it will be a plus developmentally…. he is someone i’d showcase, if he could hang with all the AA plus talent, there is no doubt where I start him next year

    Donald – try 3B
    Taylor – let’s see what he can do against some tougher competition
    Harmon – more AB’s
    Carpenter – would like to see him continue to throw
    Brummett – needs more innings

    I don’t see them sending Lou because…well, I don’t want to see him catch any more innings if he is going to be in the bigs next year. Savery looks like he’s already hit a wall, so sending him doesn’t make much sense.

  21. Donald, Taylor, Golson (Round 2 got rocked there last year), Brummett, Garcia- Not bad, not bad. Can’t wait to see if Taylor goes this guy is exciting.

  22. i also read that savery is going to instructoinal league. i can’t think of anyone else below AA that deserves it more than Taylor. if this guy continues what he is doing through the AFL, he will start next year in AA and rocket up our prospect charts. 3 doubles last night. damn!

    Dom Brown will go next year. one year too early for him.

    according to Savery’s online journal through MiLB, he says the the phillies have already told him that he will attend the instructional league this winter in order to work on his command.

    Golson – great stage for him
    Bisenius – still on the 40 man, needs to step up
    Harman (foreign born) – was hot this time last year
    Taylor (below AA) – tremendous season; otherwise Q. Berry.
    Marson – unless he needs rest
    Donald – rising up the charts

  27. Three more hits tonight. Taylor has more hits combined right now than anyone in the organization. Why would a couple of swings at AA hurt before the end of the season? He seems to have mastered High A.

  28. Brummett has 148 innings pitched this year between 3 levels. He has too many innings. His last 2 outings show that he’s getting tired. Savery also has a ton of innings and I wouldn’t send him. Would Happ get anything out of the AFL? Golson, Donald, Marson (maybe, what does he have to work on?), Taylor, Carpenter and Swindle. Taylor would get a lot out of the experience. Carpenter has some things to work on. Swindle also could continue his work.
