GCL

The GCL Phillies had an impressive week by going 5-1 and outscoring their opponents 37-8. Their overall record now stands at 22-14. That is still good for first in the GCL North, 3.5 games ahead of the Braves and Blue Jays.

Hewitt was 0-5 with five strikeouts.

7/30 – Phillies defeated the Yankees 10-0 F/6. The big news of the day was Kyle Drabek’s return from TJ surgery. He threw three solid innings, allowing only one hit. He did not walk or strikeout anyone and all nine of his outs were recorded on groundballs. Miguel Matos followed with two strikeouts in 2.1 perfect innings to record the win. Yonderman Rodriguez was 2-4 with an RBI and two runs. Hewitt was 1-3 with two runs. Valle was was 1-1 with two RBIs and a run and Castro was 2-2 with a walk, two RBIs and a run.

8/1 – Phillies defeated the Braves 10-0. Jason Knapp pitched a strong five innings, allowing only two hits and striking out six. Trevor May followed and, in his professional debut, allowed a hit in his one inning. Nathan Fike also made his first appearance, striking out three and allowing a hit in his two innings. Hewitt was 1-5 with a double and a run, but four strikeouts. Valle was 2-3 with a double, two walks, three runs and an RBI. Castro joined the fun, going 3-5 with an RBI and two runs scored.

8/2 – Tigers defeat the Phillies 2-1. Phillies defeat the Tigers 2-1. In game one Yohan Flande allowed an unearned run in five innings, allowing three hits and three walks while striking out six. Chad Poe took the loss after giving up a run in his inning of work. Valle was 1-3 with a double in a game with little offense. Hewitt was 0-3 with three more strikeouts. In the second game, Kyle Slate allowed one on four hits in his four innings of work. He picked up four strikeouts and did not walk a batter. On the season he has 17 strikeouts and only 1 walk in his 14.1 IP. Murakami was 2-3 with two doubles, a run an RBI. The Phils had only one other hit in the game. Hewitt was 0-2 with a walk.

Anthony Hewitt – As our first round pick he has been the topic of many debates both on this site, as well as other sites devoted to the Phillies. In my first report a few people questioned why I added the amount of strikeouts he had in his first dozen ABs. I didn’t do it to be negative, but rather to highlight a concern that many had when he was drafted. To this point he has 27 strikeouts and only 2 walks in 58 ABs. It’s nice to see that out of his 14 hits, 7 of them were for extra bases. However, it should also be noted that his BABIP is .452. Hewitt has very intriguing tools, but at this early stage, he’s making Greg Golson’s batting eye look good. Hopefully he shows dramatic improvement in this department as he moves forward.

  1. Nothing on Tim Binkoski who was scorching in Wiliamsport for four straight days. He’s batting better then most of his OF counterparts. What gives? Prospect or no prospect the guy clearly hits with every opportunity he has. D’Arby Meyers can’t hit, or Arlen Quiroz or any of those other guys except Susdorf!

  2. Binkoski did have a good few days, but I try to focus in more on the prospects. Despite his good few games he still has a .667 OPS in the NYPL and is 24.

  3. Hopefully they are working on getting Gose on the mound, I definitely would like to know what’s up with him & Collier though.

  5. anyone know the story on Miguel Matos? they triple jumped him (GCL to Clearwater) tonight. his stats don’t seem to warrant it? anyone have any idea why they’d do that?

  6. anyone else see that they switched 1B on GCL/Williamsport.. not good for Hamilton, but kudos to Murphy who has raked… and also, its time for Cloyd to get some respect, has he had a bad outing yet??

What else does Susdorf have to do to get a promotion?

  7. Susdorf was at Lakewood for two games last week and I believe went 1 for 9 with a walk and 3 Ks.

    Collier played today (0-2 BB).

  8. andrew – someone on this blog reported that he went to a game and saw susdorff go 1-5 but hit the ball hard every time. they don’t all fall in over a small sample size. but if the guy is hitting it hard, that’s all you can do.

and i am more excited about drabek’s game today than his prior one. this was the bounce back game. true, only 2 innings, but it appeared that the arm was strong. any reports on his velo?

  9. yea you have to let susdorf stay at lakewood for some time, its not fair to him to play 2 games there and go back down

  11. MIKE,

Matos probably just filled a spot for tonight. The GCL guys get a chance to play with the Threshers if someone has an injury since they are a hop-skip-and-a-leap away. No reason to get a guy from Lakewood to fill a spot for a night, or a few days.

Quiroz and Rick Austin (probably among other) did it last year.

    Hope that helps the confusion!

  12. Rob Roth is 20 today. Happy Birthday Rob! He’s an interesting prospect. He’s 7-1 with a 2.28 ERA. He’s not a big strikeout guy but he seems to miss bats. One concern is the number of BBs. He has 20 BBs in his 55 innings of work. I’m hoping that will fix itself. His last 2 outings have been a little shaky. Let’s see if the league has caught up to him or he can kick in another gear.

  13. PP Fan, I was merely stating fact. I obviously realize two games is a small sample (1-6 on BiP). The Phils perhaps didn’t realize that and sent him right back to Williamsport.

I’m all for giving guys a challenge and moving them up. IMO, there are plenty of wasted spots on organizational filler throughout the organization. Susdorf is a prime example of a guy who should be moved up. Good to see they’ve at least tried a couple guys recently (Taylor, Carrasco).

  14. Susdorf’s brief promotion was a bit of a head scratcher to me – for one, Williamsport and Lakewood are (just guessing here) about 250 miles apart, so it’s not like a Reading-Philadelphia type commute. I wonder if they weren’t sure about Dominic Brown’s injury, and called him up as a replacement.

I’m okay with him staying in Williamsport, as long as they double jump him to Clearwater next year, and move him up to Reading if he does well

  15. I heard the speculation on the Susdorf move up was to fill a hole Lakewood had in the outfield. Once those guys started coming back, they moved Susdorf back down so that he could continue to get playing time.

  16. Coadyroades,

Actually I went Quinnipiac College where he went and he’s 23. 2/2/85. Where is he lacking right now in skill level?

  17. what’s the story on harold garcia? he’s a little bit old for the gcl in that he’s almost 22, but he’s also been pretty quietly putting up some really solid numbers for a middle infielder. given his age, harman’s struggles this year, and the fact that cardenas is no longer in the system, i’d have to think that if he keeps up his current rate of production (.409 OBP, .529 SLG) he should start next year at lakewood.
