Thursday quick hits

Just a few random musings today

* I’ve added a few more player profiles in Carlos Monasterios and Jeremy Slayden. If you look on the left side and see a player’s name, but no profile link, it means I’ve got him on the list of players to do. But as you can tell, I have a lot more guys to add. If you see someone who isn’t listed that you think needs a profile, please list it here. I can figure it out too, but it will help when I’m creating them if I can just look somewhere and see a list of guys I need to add.

* The Lou Marson watch has been added!

* As you may have read, Michael Taylor and Drew Naylor have been promoted to Clearwater along with personal favorite Ben Pfinsgraff. Probably overdue. As I’ve mentioned on Taylor, I’m still going to wait until the end of the year to judge, but at this point he’s looking like a solid prospect and this is more than a fluky 2 months. We’ll wait and see.

* Had Taylor not been promoted, the Phillies may have had a realistic chance of winning 3 batting titles in one season. Taylor was comfortably leading the SAL with a .361 average, 17 points better than his closest competitor. Adrian Cardenas is hitting .316 and is 20 points behind the league leader in the FSL, and Lou Marson is 3rd in the EL at .348. Its sure nice to see non-mercenary Phillies at the top of these leaderboards, isn’t it?

  1. This Lounacy is too much!

I heard that the twist at the end of The Happening is that everyone is exposed to Marmania and it drives them insane!

  2. It’s great to see our prospects on leaderboards, but the mercs generally suck anyway. That’s pretty much why the triple-A club always finishes last, wherever it happens to be located in any given year.

I’m sure most of you saw Kevin Goldstein’s top 100 prospects update, but for anyone who didn’t, he has Carrasco (#68, I think) slightly up from before the season, and Savery (#97) way down as a result of results and injury concerns.

  3. PP How come Heitor Correa isn’t on the Williamsport roster? Is this just to limit his innings? Looking at his last ten starts from the GCL is realllllllly impressive stuff.

  4. phuture phillies I was reading you piece on mach about being drafted cause of signing cheap compaired to other fourth round choices,he was a reach at four,do you see that trend this draft, its one of the things that bothers me about this ownership with the lack of talent they let riley cooper go and workman high picks that you need to get right to make your minor league systems be able to feed the big club talent to trade and keep so that you can be good for long periods not just for a couple of years then bad for long stretches,if ownership doesn’t want to pay twenty million for pitchers then pay in the draft like detroit and boston and the yankees do. is detroit that big of a market that we can’t spend what they do to keep a good supply of yound talent.

  5. Pat the Bat; I expect him to pitch in Williamsport, I think its probably just a case of them trying to limit his innings. I haven’t read anything about an injury, then again, he’s not exactly an elite guy in terms of someone the Phillies beat writers would be talking about. If he doesn’t surface by the end of the month, I’ll try and find out more.

rocky; This year’s draft appears to be much different from last year’s, in terms of how the team approached the first 10 rounds. There were no “Mach” type picks. Now, if they don’t sign 3 or 4 of the guys taken in the first 10 rounds, then it will essentially be worse than taking a guy like Mach and having him retire after a half season. But we won’t know that for another 2 months.

  6. The GCL season kicks off today, giving us yet another box score to peruse. MILB.com still hasn’t updated the roster to reflect who’s on the squad, but I guess when today’s box score is posted we’ll certainly have a better idea.

  7. the phils absolutely have to have another big arm to contend, whether it be by trade or bringing up someone. personally i feel carrasco should be here right now along with outman/bastardo. such a novel idea bringing up players from your system. i mean where did lester, masterson and papillbon come from. etc. are you trying to tell me that you can bring up kendrick last year and cannot bring up pitchers now. see what they can do. or am i going to hear the same old sorry excuse their growth will be retarded. tell it to joe nuxall.

  8. In response to the Nuxhall comment…good ol’ Joe pitched one game at age 15 during WWII, when anybody who was healthy and older than 18 was drafted…by Uncle Sam. He had a sparkling 67.5 ERA during his age 15 season in didn’t resurface in the majors for another 8 years. Please don’t use him as an example.

  9. Carrasco would get rocked right now and be ruined for his career. Bastardo is hurt and is a wild, flyball pitcher right now.

  10. Danny(Philly): Keith please answer my question!! I’ve never heard your take on Lou Marson. So… Whats your take on Lou Marson?

SportsNation Keith Law: (2:32 PM ET ) Never seen him live. He’s having an unbelievable year. Hoping to pick that club up sometime in the next month – they have a few guys there exceeding expectations.

It looks like even KLaw is having a case of Lounacy!

  11. I assume he’s also referring to Taylor there “they have a few guys there exceeding expectatons…” (is he referrring to Reading or PhilsPharm?)

  12. i agree that he is talking about reading and i guess about golson, donald and bastardo. all three of them are exceeding pre-seasons expectations and having great seasons at AA. bastardo has come out of nowhere and is putting up better numbers at AA than carrasco. i don’t think that he is a top 100 prospect, but definitely looking like an mlb pitcher.

  13. For as much as Sweet Lou has impressed me with his hitting the guy can flat out catch, he is really good at blocking the ball in the dirt. Has a very good arm. I think this kid has a chance to be a REAL GOOD ONE and REAL SOON

  14. yeah and i suppose joe nuxhall was a bad pitcher. why dont you give his lifetime stats. your missing the point every team has minor league pitchers on their roster, theres to many to list how does anyone know carrasco would” get rocked”. are you carnac? sometimes you have to take a chance.

  15. for you to do a hatchet job on joe nuxhall is a disgrace. from 18 years old on he was a great pitcher 18 ! and by the way carrasco had the best whip 1.33 on reading and his so to walk ratio was 3.5 to 1. also the phillies 3rd baseman of the future jason donald had the 2nd highest ops on the team 960 behind marson. this is not a contest to outdo one another lets make the big team better.

  16. I see the GCL Phillies game is over. They are 1-0 with a 5-2 victory. Sebastian Valle, a 17 year old catcher, was a hitting star today. 2-4 with a HR. He’s listed as a lefty throwing catcher. Is that right (no pun intended)? Reginal Simon got the win. 5 innings, 5H, 1R, 3K, 1BB. An 18 year old righty. Both were in the DSL last year. Harold Garcia went 3-4 with a 2B & 3B and 2 RBIs. He’s out of the VSL. Valle is a guy that intrigued us last year. He’s young and we’ve been waiting to see him states-side.

  17. dave bush just lost his no hitter. a shame. pp theres a big difference between saying carrasco may not be ready yet, we can disagree, and saying he,ll get rocked. no one knows that includeing me but these kids have worked their tails off and even if a chance they deserve a shot. id love to see some of these guys say what they say to a players face.

  18. Valle is the best prospect on the GCL team, and will probably make my Top 30 next year. Andy follows the DSL and VSL guys a lot more than me, so he’ll be able to weigh in on them as the season progresses.

  19. Sebastian Valle throws righty and bats lefty. That is a mistake on the on-line roster. He is one of the top prospects from last year’s very good DSL team along with Leandro Castro (speedy CF with some power) and Reginal Simon.

Simon will be one of my favorite prospects to watch this year. He is young and projectible with a 90-92 mph fastball already. He is from Haiti originally and probably did not play as much baseball growing up as players on the Dominican side of the island. We may also be opening up a little pipeline of players as this year’s DSL team has added another Haitian player in Francique Charles. Maybe Rio-Nunez is going down there from Quebec to help translate.

  20. Tyson Brummett is one of the hottest pitchers in the system. In his EL debut tonight he had a six hit shutout with two out in the bottom of the 9th before Sam Walls let three inherited runs score but Reading held on to win 4-3. Did not get Brummett’s final pitch count but he was at 96 after 8 innings and loaded the bases with two out in the 9th so his pitch count had to be well over 100. The Phils are going against the trend and really extending their starters in the organization. Recently Naylor had an 114 pitch, 9 inning complete game for Lakewood.

  21. Thanks Andy. It looks like the GCL has a bunch of talent from the DSL and VSL. If a couple of these kids make an impact, it will strengthen the entire organization. We can definitely use that.

  22. I hate to keep bringing up the Nuxhall thing, but I also hate it when people get their facts wrong. He pitched 2/3 of an inning at age 15, then didn’t throw another pitch in the majors until age 23 as a relief pitcher in 1952. His first “good” season was 1955, the year of his ONLY all-star game appearance (age 26) and from 1957 to the end of his career he was league average or below. Carrasco is still 21. I think we all agree (or at least hope) that Carrasco has a shot to be better than league average or below for a majority of his career. Let’s give him a chance to learn!
