Karl Bolt won yesterday’s vote, and while I can understand why people would get behind him, he’s not really a prospect at this point. He’ll be in and out of the team with his military obligation, and he was already old for his league. But hey, this is YOUR list, not mine, so it’s all good.

  2. I keep waiting for Squire, andyb or someone else with more knowledge than I have to bring in one of the academy prospects, but since they won’t, I will.

  6. I am reluctant to bring up an academy prospect simply because we really haven’t seen them against competition we can evaluate. Plus, the better prospects like Carrasco and Freddy Galvis never or rarely play in the complex leagues. By definition you have second tier prospects already. Valle could be top 30, but we just need more info to rate him (like Julian Sampson also, though we do have more detailed pre-draft reports on him).

    Third day in a row I am sticking with Matt Spencer, our #3 pick from last year.

  11. Matt Spencer is my vote for today.

    I guess I disagree with some people’s analysis, or better yet, definition of what a Prospect is. This whole “getting to the Bigs business” is not a sprint. It is a marathon. A 22 year old kid who was sent to GCL last year because there were two guys in the system above him at WMSPRT (one who’s been around several years already and another who was a higher draft pick), got in almost every inning of the season (instead of sharing reps), and put up some pretty impressive power numbers (8HRs, 4-3bs, and 10-2bs) in his first year ever with a wooden bat, doesn’t seeem like such a waste to me.

    Bolt is the product of our military’s finest training programs, and is certainly capable of running “the marathon.” Now no one knows what the commitment thing is all about, in fact it could be stated that he lost more than a couple of rounds in the Draft because of that fact, but he certainly seems to have the tools, and perhaps much more importantly, the desire “to make it” in this game.
    Back to the voting.

  16. A 22-yr old college senior 1B who fails to put up even an .800 OPS in the GCL, playing against mainly HS kids and Latin American players in the US for the first time is not a prospect, regardless of how many AB he got.

    But for 4th day in a row Will Savage, i love the kid’s makeup and he was good for a great oklahoma team at the back end of games, and i think he has the potential to be a solid arm out of the pen

    Take my word on this, the kid has the most intensity I’ve ever seen. He’s going to be good.

  33. I like Spencer, Diekman, and Sampson- Sampson will probably be the best, but all things kinda equal- I’ll go with Spencer’s advanced college experience.

  34. I like the college experience he brings also. Makes for a better rounded, more mature player. Too many on here seem to think college ball is a waste of time.

    Costanzo is high at #4, but is at least a very legit top 10 prospect, based on getting his OPS over .850 and improving his D after a painfully slow start in AA. And he plays a premium position.

  43. What about Chance CHapman? Good results at Williamsport and everything i read about him says his slider is already major league ready. Velocity’s not great (88-91 supposedly) but looks like he has a chance to be a decent groundball pitcher, and a prospect that could move fast if the phillies push him. That’s my vote.

    We’re clearly not on the same page with Costanzo. I see
    him as a big drafting mistake* by the Phillies, but I have
    been wrong before. Let’s see what he does in AAA in ’08.
    I have to say that I don’t expect much. I don’t believe
    Gillick’s recent comments (he’s still a prospect, but two
    years away) for a minute. That was typical Gillick-speak IMO.

    *Too high as a position player. Probably better future as a
    pitcher.
