Reader Top 30, #25

Travis Mattair takes the 24th slot on the list, and we have only 6 more spots left with a bunch of promising guys left to pick. Here’s the plan. We’re going to finish the last 6 spots on the list. After we finish the day by day, I’ll take your individual top 30 lists if you’d like to send them, and we can compare and contrast each other’s lists. At some point in the next couple weeks, I’ll give my own Top 30 list, and then I’m going to present my rankings based on the evaluation system I created, as well as rankings based on position for all minor leaguers, to get an idea where I think Phillies prospects stack up, and where each team’s farm system ranks. Until then, let’s finish the day by day, starting with #25 today.

01. Carrasco
02. Cardenas
03. Savery
04. Costanzo
05. Outman
06. Carpenter
07. Marson
08. Donald
09. Drabek
10. Happ
11. Harman
12. Golson
13. Jaramillo
14. E Garcia
15. Brown
16. Bastardo
17. Bisenius
18. Berry
19. Myers
20. d’Arnaud
21. Naylor
22. Galvis
23. Correa
24. Mattair

And here’s a reminder for the eligibilty

For the purpose of this poll, consider “eligibility” to be less than 50 AB/25 games for a position player, and less than 25 IP/20 games as a pitcher.

So, here is where a few other guys stand

Mathieson: 37 IP. Not eligible
Zagurski: 25 G. Not eligible

  1. Hmmm.

Sampson only pitched one game, so it’s tough to judge him. Schlitter could rise quickly through the minors, so he would have nice potential. Next year we will have a better gauge of what we have with him. The same goes for guys like Chapman, Brummett, James, Diekman etc.

If Bear Hill were doing a bit better in Hawaii, I’d put him here. As a result, I’m going with Corey Willey. Even though he’s a bit old (26, I believe), he was a huge part of Clearwater’s championship team (as was their whole bullpen), and I believe he has the most potential to be a solid middle reliever in the Bigs.

  2. Sticking with Matt Spencer over Sampson, Matos,Overholt, and Byrd. My gut is that Sampson is the best prospect of this later group (and might have been a #2 pick talent-wise), but Spencer has more production to look at. Matos is also underrated as a prospect given his age and stats.

  3. After last week’s listing of Bolt by Baseball America, seems he’s a pretty motivated kid. Me thinks a good prospect.

  4. Sampson over Spencer (he was a very good college hitter) and Diekman in that order.

Do people think that Bourn is good enough to start next year?

  5. Saw him play this summer in GCL. He was in the clean-up spot, and hit 3 of 4 to the warning track. The guy rakes.

This guy guy wears a uniform on and off the field. Have you seen his picture? When he finally makes it up here to the MotherShip, he’ll fill the stands with women. We do love the long ball.

  8. Darren Byrd is my vote, I thought Bolt had to finsh his duties with the Air Force and counldn’t play next year, is that still the case?

  9. On Bolt, no one knows about how much time they’ll give him off, but the ruling is he must serve 2 years of Active Duty, of which 6 months is already gone. I heard he wasn’t even supposed to play FIL, but had done so well in GCL that the Phillies struck some kind of deal to get him there. I also heard he works almost 7 days a week to cover both “gigs”. This kid sounds incredibly motivated to me, hard working, and when you look at it, how many guys spend almost that much time on the DL during their first 3-4 years. He hasn’t missed a practice or a game since he was drafted, but we’ll see if he’s allowed to show up for Spring Training.
There’s also that ever menacing thing called deployment. Let’s all hope he doesn’t end up in the sandbox.

  10. I don’t understand all the support for Bolt. Nice kid but he had an average year at GCL. The mere fact that he was at GCL suggests he is not a real prospect as a college player. Francisco Murillo on the GCL team is probably the better 1B prospect because of his age, and he is probably not a top 30 prospect. Rizzotti on the Williamsport team plays the same position and is also a better prospect (again, probably not top 30).
