Nice article on Josh Outman

This is certainly the most in depth piece I’ve ever seen on Outman, and details his unorthodox delivery in college, how he altered it, and the impact it’s had. Very good stuff for a change from the official web site.

Hat tip to frequent reader/commenter dajafi, who posted this over at TGP.

  1. Damn, that’s interesting. Given that he’s worked with non-standard mechanics before now, and looking back at the numbers you’ve posted on Outman in the minors so far, isn’t there reason to suppose that he has a good chance of a more durable arm – maybe even maintaining higher velocity?

  2. Nice article there… somewhat surprising, as you said phuturephillies, from the official site.

To an extent, I fear for Outman, Carrasco, and Savery. They each have issues they need to work out — Outman his command, Carrasco his feel for pitching, Savery his adaptation to pitching full time — and whatever pitching problems the Phillies have, it will ultimately be self-defeating to rush any of these guys to the majors before they’re ready. Outman and Carrasco need to begin next year in Reading, and I think Savery should probably start in Clearwater.

I like that Gillick has shown a willingness to be aggressive with prospects, but there’s a time and a place for such aggressiveness… and that time and place is not here, with these three.

  3. I’d love to see a video of that delivery. Sounds wacky!

The Phillies could have a disgustingly dominant, young staff by 2009/2010.

  4. I’m guessing that Josh’s changing his delivery isn’t boding well for sales of his Father’s book.

That was an interesting article, and I can’t help but wonder if this is the start of a “get to know Josh Outman” campaign by the Phils, which will end up with him making the opening day roster in 2008.

  5. The Phils have made some good moves to support the core of offense and defense. However, it is clear that they still need the solid starting pitcher, will it be a trade or will someone step up and pitch at a high level to help push the Phils throught the NL East, NLCS, and WS. Any thoughts or bets on who it will be? (Eaton, Benson, Durbin, Durbin, Blackley, Carasco, Outman, another not yet in the arsenal???)
Benson may not be around by the time the Phils want to make a move, they have the wait and see approach this offseason and there are many others looking at Benson.
