Reader Top 30, #20

Today we round out the top 20, and then head for the final third of the list. After we finish the top 30, I’ll be working on some general stuff leading up to me sharing my top 30. As I have mentioned in the past, over the last few months I’ve developed a system to rank prospects not just on the Phillies, but throughout the entire minor leagues, and my system works without bias. It’s far from perfect, but it’s a start. I’ll share more details on that later, I’m still processing data and inputing it into the system, it’s not close to ready yet, so it will be a while. Anyway, on to #20

01. Carrasco
02. Cardenas
03. Savery
04. Costanzo
05. Outman
06. Carpenter
07. Marson
08. Donald
09. Drabek
10. Happ
11. Harman
12. Golson
13. Jaramillo
14. E Garcia
15. Brown
16. Bastardo
17. Bisenius
18. Berry
19. Myers

And here’s a reminder for the eligibilty

For the purpose of this poll, consider “eligibility” to be less than 50 AB/25 games for a position player, and less than 25 IP/20 games as a pitcher.

So, here is where a few other guys stand

Mathieson: 37 IP. Not eligible
Zagurski: 25 G. Not eligible

  1. I like Naylor, but I’m still going with the upside of Correa. I know he was in the GCL, but that’s only a level below short season ball, and Correa is 18 (17 for most of the season) instead of 21.

    Correa.

  2. Freddy Galvis played at 17 years old at Williamsport not the GCL . Arguably best glove in the the organization already.

  3. Gotta go with D’Arnaud here. It sounds like he could be a good, solid hitter, and from what I remember on Draft day, he is a top notch receiver. I envision his upside to be a Lieberthal-type catcher, and Lieby had a nice career in Philly.

  4. Travis over Galvis at this point… we are forgetting about Dan Brauer… he was coming along nicely until another arm injury…behind that I think a bunch of arms with some potential (Chapman, Sampson, Cruse, Monosterios & Harker) and probably only a few position players with any real upside, that being Slayden, Spencer, Mach and maybe Taylor…

  5. I will stick with Travis but actually now that I think about it … I could almost change my mind on my pick… my next pick is Carlos Valenzuela. I am sure you know about him.. He was one of the highest hearlded signings we have had in this area for some time and they say his potential is astounding… and that is what we are looking at is potential… he has the highest ceiling from what there is left to choose from…

The big catch as deemed by the Phillies. The Phillies signed shortstop Carlos Valenzuela for $200,000. The Dominican is also sometimes called the “Republic of Baseball” little more than a baseball factory efficient in producing an extraordinary number of poor young players with “quick hands,” a “plus arm” or a “pop in the bat,” valuable raw skills that can be sold on the cheap and exported to the U.S. minor-leagues to be manufactured into big-league star power.

The scouts saw in him as a power-hitting shortstop with tremendous back strength, quick hands and an above average arm. The Yankees wanted him — maybe for as much as $400,000. But after signing too many “July 2 babies” before him, their budget was dry.

So as slick fielding as Galvis may be, CV may have that and might turn out to be a power-hitter to boot… cross your fingers and your toes…

  6. Can’t bring myself to vote for a guy like Valenzuela who has yet to come to US anywhere on the list. I don’t recall seeing him among the academy leaders, either?

  7. Hard to vote for Valenzuela over Galvis when he only signed for $200K. Galvis might have signed for more and then showed enough potential to be jumped all the way to Williamsport at age 17. Valenzuela could be good, but we have no data on him yet. I am not sure I would add the best players in the DSL or the VSL (Valle, Castro, Ballestas, Torres) to even a top 40 or 50 list until we see them over here.

  8. I’d lump Naylor, D’Arnaud, and Galvis as the same in terms of prospect status, but Is still think Naylor is turning out pretty good so far.

  9. So what. Were all you guys on D’Arneaud’s HS baseball team? You obviously have yet to see him play at the level he’s currently at. Don’t get me wrong. He is a player but not ahead of so many guys still not getting picked here.

Diekman, Mach, Taylor, Baez, Bolt, Naylor, Correa. Will he develop? Yes I believe so. Top 20? No way. Not even top 30. Not Mattair either. They’re both just too young.

  10. Gini Don–D’Arnaud has not shown much yet, but we’re talking about the #20 prospect in a weakish system here, and a position that privileges defense. Some of the guys you mention might be ahead of him, but Baez and Bolt? I don’t think so.
