Edgar Garcia wins yesterday’s duel, and today we round out the top 15. Still a handful of quality prospects left, should be interesting to see how the next 5-6 spots pan out.

01. Carrasco
02. Cardenas
03. Savery
04. Costanzo
05. Outman
06. Carpenter
07. Marson
08. Donald
09. Drabek
10. Happ
11. Harman
12. Golson
13. Jaramillo
14. E Garcia

And here’s a reminder for the eligibilty

For the purpose of this poll, consider “eligibility” to be less than 50 AB/25 games for a position player, and less than 25 IP/20 games as a pitcher.

So, here is where a few other guys stand

Mathieson: 37 IP. Not eligible
Zagurski: 25 G. Not eligible

  1. Dominic Brown. If he’s anywhere near as good as advertised, then the Phils have struck late round gold.

  2. Berry.
Wasn’t he Phillies Minors MVP, or something like that? Got to see him in Clearwater this past week and he was exceptional in CF (covers a lot of territory). Far better than Brown or Michael Taylor or Spencer. Myers actually is faster and seems to run down a lot more stuff than any of them, but Berry is very aggressive offensively. His baserunning is way ahead of everyone I saw in the FIL. As a total player, I like Berry.

  3. I agree with Alex … Berry looks like the real deal. If not for some injuries at draft time we would probably never got him…

  4. Drew Naylor.

He’s a 6’4″, 210 lb, 21 year-old righty from Australia who posted a 0.62 ERA through his first four starts with the CrossCutters this season. Struggled in back-to-back starts after that and then settled down, finishing strong with back-to-back 11K wins. Fastball in low 90s and a good, strong curve. Solid character according to some reports. Captured the Rankin Johnson Award, sponsored by the Williamsport Crosscutters Booster Club, given to the clubs top pitcher. Naylor led the team with 8 wins while leading the entire NY-P in innings pitched (93.1) and strikeouts (97). Had a 1.14 WHIP and batters hit just .228 off him. Tremendous progress from previous season in GCL, especially K rate.

Said Williamsport manager Greg Legg: “He’s just a horse”.

  5. Dominic Brown edging out Antonio Bastardo. Here I am going for high ceiling. Brown appears to have significant power potential as he fills out along with above average speed and a RF arm. That is a good set to start with and puts him a little ahead of D’Arby Myers from the same squad. Myers has to work on his strike zone judgement and stay healthy. If he does that he could easily return to the top 10 next year. I like Bastardo, but not as much as Brown.

That is their numbers this year in order… Berry also played in the SAL where as both Brown and Myers played in the NYP…

  7. From what I saw personally, it’s just too early to tell on Mattair, D’Arneau and Myers. There are flashes of brilliance, but no consistency on any of the three. They are very young. Mattair plays very well at third, but his swing is way too long. When he connects, there is legitimate power. Myers is just plain fast, and this will go a long way, but little pop in the bat. Just can’t figure out D’Arneau, looks like a strong young college player.
Baez at 3B hit a bomb in Bradenton that hit the roof of the Pirates training center and strong defensively in the infield. Taylor is a specimen. Looks like a defensive tackle. Durant looked slow and unmotivated. Very impressed with Sanchez at C. Mach is a player. Bolt was something like 8 for 13 last week playing a strong 1B. He hit one out of Brighthouse on Saturday that cleared the bullpen. Chris Rhoads is a crafty little lefty who flat out, got guys out. Cardenas is a player, not as good as Donald in the field, but aggressive at the plate. DeFratus, Diekman, Roth and Slate all had good outings, but Carrasco is the real thing. Overall, and we saw this at Williamsport this past season, the overall offense seemed a bit weaker than one would like.

  8. Nails – You forgot to mention their age in your post. Berry was 22, Brown 19, and Myers 18. Also, looking at Berry and Brown, their OPS was .003 apart, essentially the same. Three years different in age, one year different in level. Seems to me that Brown is the better prospect by your own measure.

  9. D’Arby Myers over Brown, Berry, Naylor, and Bastardo. Myers is still very young, is extremely fast, and does have some pop in his bat. The Phils sure do have lots of the same player in their system (Victorino, Bourn, Golson, Berry, and Myers and I’m sure I’m overlooking somebody). Unfortunately, its not an abilitiy/position with loads of trade value because lots of teams have the same type of player.

  10. I still say Bastardo. I want to thank Alex for the scouting report. I love statistics as much as anyone (hence the devotation to Bastardo), but first hand accounts mean an awful lot too, so that was very helpful.

One quick observation. I took a little while to go back and look at the Phillies’ draft picks for this year. It seems to me that the team took a disproportionate share of catchers (I guess there’s just a typical burn rate for that position) and most notably, power hitting first basemen. In light of who they have at first in Philly, I thought this was a little odd, but it tells me that they are already hedging their bets on whether they can get a long-term deal done with him and also that they want a ready supply of power hitters available from their minor league system, which is not a bad idea when you’re playing in the “Bank.” If they hit big on one of the young sluggers such as Bolt or Rizzotti, don’t be surprised if Howard is either traded or is allowed to leave once he’s put in six years with the team. The very thought of this depresses me to no end (let’s face it, the guy hit 47 home runs in a BAD year – I still think he’s going to hit 60 at least once and perhaps multiple times – you don’t see a talent like that every day), but, alas, it should not be a surprise if it happens.

  11. Glad to read that Diekman pitched well in the FIL. He actually had better numbers in his three starts than Savery’s seven starts in the NY-Penn. Never have enough of 6’4″ 190 lbs. 20 year old lefties.

  12. Brown–When I saw him in person this year, he impressed me with a 4 for 5 night, and excellent speed. Needs to add a little meat to his frame.

  13. I agree that Berry is a better choice than Myers, maybe than Brown (55 SBs!). But I gotta go with 97Ks in 93 IP.

    Naylor.

  14. Brown. Age/level and power potential give him the nod over Myers. I like Bastardo a lot, too, both probably more than Golson.

  15. Bastardo-
Myers came into the year with alot of talk, and started off great- but you really had to see him play to realize that he is currently an undersized slap hitter with ‘pretty good speed’ as opposed to great speed, and he doesn’t recognize breaking balls at all yet.
