Clearwater Threshers Win 2007 FSL Championship

After coming from behind to win the Western Division Championship and getting momentum on their side, it seemed not a matter of “if” the Cleawater Threshers would win the Florida State League Championship, but “when” would they win the championship.  The team won the first two games of the finals series at Brevard County, then came home to Clearwater on Monday for the third game.  Though the team dropped the game on Monday at home they stormed back on Tuesday night and wrapped things up.

The team jumped out early on Tuesday getting three runs in the first inning.  Brian Burgamy lead off the inning with a walk, and Brad Haman crushed a two-run  home run as the second batter to get an early jump on the scoring.  The team would eventually go on to win 5-2 with Brevard County picking up their only two runs off starter Andrew Carpenter as solo home runs in the fourth and seventh innings.

For the night Carpenter gave up two runs on seven hits while fanning six and walking one.  Ron “Bear” Hill threw the final two frames giving up no runs on two hits with one K and no walks.   (The bullpen was excellent for the Threshers and did not give up a single run throughout the playoffs. )  Brad Harman lead the way for the offense going 3-4 at the plate with a home run, a double, 2-RBIs, 2 Runs, and a walk.

  1. 2009 Leigh Valley…2010 Philadelphia???

Just kidding. I know ‘wins and losses’ aren’t stressed in the minors but I think guys having ‘winning’ attitudes never hurts.

  2. The last time our team in Clearwater made the playoffs several guys made it to the majors. ONly one is still with the Phillies, but it does show strength within the organization. From that 1999 team Johnny Estrada, Nick Punto, Eric Valent, Jason Micheals, & Geoff Geary made it to the majors. There may be one or two other pitchers who made it as well that I am not remembering the names of right now, but considering how late we stayed up celebrating in Clearwater it is amazing I can remember anything at this point…LOL!

  3. Congrats to the Clearwater Threshers and more importantly congrats to Drew Carpenter for just being so damn good. Drew Carpenter = Consistency. It will be very interesting to see where Baseball America places Drew in the Phillies Top Prospect List.

C’mon dude, this is supposed to be a happy thread. You’re bringing us down. 8^)

Clearwater winning the championship is great. Players like Carpenter, Harman, Savage, Hill, etc all stepped up to the plate big time and can build off of this experience. Hopefully that translates to continued success up to the Major League Level.

  5. The big story coming out of the FSL post season is Brad Harman. He hit .344 by going 11 for 32 with 2 homers and 7 RBI for a 1.010 OPS and led the post season in hits and total bases. He had a torrid second half. In Aug. he hit .350 by going 43 for 123 with 5 homers and 25 RBI. for a .998 OPS. The big question can he play third base? I see the Phils Fall ball roster has his listed positions as 2B and 3B.

  6. In very short order, Harman has gone from a prospect who looked completely lost, to a solid contributor, to an excellent hitter, to a flat out stud. He’s still young for this level and he’s improved so quickly that we really can only guess at his ceiling. With Harman, Donald, Carpenter, Outman, Overholt, Carrasco, Marson and others, next year’s Reading team is going to be able to play some ball people.

  7. H MAN–Right you are! Following Reading in ’08 should bbe interesting. Still Allentown looks short again.

One step at a time, I guess. Go for the Eastern Lg championship in ’08!

Question for me: how long will Carpenter STAY at Readng?

  8. Attaway fellas… great job!!! I know I enjoyed the 07 season in Clearwater, just hope we can field a decent team next season as I expect a lot of the current roster to move up. During the final game of the championship series a few of the other fans and I were giving our best guesses and reasons as to who will return and who will for whatever reason not be back in Clearwater next season and the results were somewhat disappointing. Personally I only see a few guys coming back and I don’t believe they will stay here long. Look out MLB, in a couple of years… here come the Phillies!!!

    Get ready for instructs Jeff…

And a Repeat in Clearwater next year… Back-to-Back baby!!!
