Buckle up, and let’s see what happens. If a Phillies prospect is traded, check back here, I’ll give the rundown.
And that, folks, is as anti-climatic as it gets from the Phillies perspective. No outfielder to replace Victorino, instead, we’re going to experience the joy that is Chris Roberson again. The Phillies did add Julio Mateo, a 29 year old pitcher from Seattle (shock that Gillick would deal with Seattle), but it’s unsure whether or not he’s going to be added to the major league roster right away or not. Merchan had no real future with the Phillies, so it’s not a bad deal.
man gillick made a big splash so far huh?
knotts signed from Newark bears and assigned to reading to replace maloney.

Yeah, that Iguchi seems to make outs more often than he gets hits, and don’t get me started on Lohse (you can’t spell Lohse without L-O-S-E) – he has yet to win a game for the Phillies. ;^)
And to make matters worse, the Phillies win streak is killing Utley’s chances of winning NL MVP. ;^)
again, ;^)

isnt carpenter tearing it up in clearwater? i almost would have rather seen him moved up for a challenge than to sign this atlantic league guy.

By the way did Texas get taken for a ride with this Gagne trade? Gabbard and Murphy? Doesn’t that seem like not enough ?

Phillies just traded either Jesus Merchan or Danny Sandoval (it’s unconfirmed) for Julio Mateo.

It’s merchan. Thoughts?

I never heard of Mateo, but he seems to be an average relief pitcher. It looks like he has some problems this year (domestic dispute with the wife), and for some reason has only been in about ten games. Merchan was lighting it up in Reading.
Still, I don’t know if Merchan fit into the Phils plans. If he didn’t, then it’s a low-risk move.

Merchan is a non-factor for the Phillies, so it’s a wash, we might get some decent innings from Mateo in the big league pen. We’ll see.

He’s a fairly old prospect who was still in Double-A. I have no bones about it. Looks like another low risk/high reward type of deal that we’ve become accustom to from Gillick over the past couple of days. I was really hoping for Marte/Torres from the Pirates, but I guess I’ll have to settle for this. That being said, I’d rather have traded Sandoval, as he was the more useless of the two. Oh well.

Do you think that Merchan’s agent will use that line during contract negotiations?

Actually, now that I think about it, I wonder if the Phils are thinking about promoting Donald to Reading to replace Jesus?

if im correct, Mateo pitched fairly well with the mariners last season and this season to the tune of around 3.00 era. He was suspended 10 games in May for the domestic dispute and subsequent missed game due to booking. Afterword he was sent to AAA Tacoma where he has been completely lights out to the tune of an ERA of less than 1. While i have qualms about his makeup and all, it was a low risk move and could potentially be a steal if this guy gets himself on the right track.

That would make some amount of sense, Jeff. At 22 years old, I don’t think the Phils have to worry about hurting Donald’s development by rushing him up the system a bit. If he can take to AA for the rest of the year, they can toy with starting him at AAA in his age 23 year next year, and then we’re getting somewhere.

The bad deal isn’t for the Phils, its for us. Another minor move that won’t do anything to help the team. I hate seeing this team go no where, and I hate seeing management keep it that way.

We can all tell that Smalls has been watching the Phils for maybe one season too many. You always seem to be very pessimistic, Smalls. The Phils plugged the hole left by Chase Utley’s broken hand, got a serviceable starter who’s been pretty good against the NL and who we can give run support to, and a guy who pitched well until he ran into some trouble at home. All in all, I think the Phils improved SLIGHTLY at the trade deadline. You shouldn’t have been expecting any sort of blockbuster. The lineup is gelling right now, even without Chase. Hamels tossed a gem. Myers is closing again. Geary (who was just called up) didn’t walk a single batter after being banished to triple-A. We don’t have to see any more of “The Real Deal”, who looked kind of lost in his last start. We know what we’re getting with Lohse — a guy who can keep us in the game. The way this offense is hitting, that’s all we really need.
The next move is to cut Barajas or try trading him after the deadline via waivers. He can’t hit his way out of a wet paper bag.

Well, Bourn and Victorino are now on the 15 day DL. We are one move short at this point.

Lohse is a guy that can keep them in the game? He’s Durbin, but better at it. Hit or miss. I don’t think I’m being pessimistic, or at the least more pessimistic than realistic. This team isn’t “gelling,” they’re making their September run in July.
I wasn’t expecting a blockbuster, I got exactly what I expected. A couple moves that tweaked things, that won’t really help. Mateo might not even come to the majors. I don’t know how fans are still hopeful after seeing what the Phils have done the past couple years and seeing the semblance to this team. Why is no one else tired of these types of moves?

Hey – so sorry for the off topic post here but I am not sure on this site (which I love by the way) where to post general questions. My question – where the heck did Savery go? I have been waiting to see him show up in the box score for Williamsport but to no avail. They don’t post probably pitchers anywhere, and now today I went to look at their roster, update 7/25, and he’s not on it (if memory serves I did see his name, with no number, after he signed).
Anyone have any info on this??

Savery has not pitched in a while. He is going to Williamsport but I am sure they are going to ease him in. Hopefully he shows up in relief sometime in the next week and builds up to a start or two by the end of the year. There should be no rush because he has played lots of baseball this year already.

I’m okay with that if they ease Savery in that way, especially given his medical issues (We don’t want Conlin writing about an article about him too!). I wonder if they’ll let him swing the bat a little bit?

Savey has been in Williamsport for a week now. He’s been pitching and throwing simulated games. I think he’s supposed to play on Sunday.
