Things looking good for Workman et all

Thanks to SQUIRE for posting this article in a previous post.

With the signing of Savery, the Phillies have now signed 17 of their first 19 picks and all but seven of their first 33 selections. They also expressed confidence that they will be able to come to terms with right-hander Brandon Workman (the No. 3 selection), right-hander Julian Sampson (No. 12) and center fielder Cedric Johnson (No. 19), but all three high school players need to be signed by Aug. 15.

I’m going to try to get a bit more info on Johnson, and if I can hunt it down today, I’ll update this post. I’d be happy with this haul here, and I’d upgrade the draft to a solid B.

  1. If we sign all three guys I will personally take the brunt of Selig’s wrath for Gillick/Arbuckle for them. Would be a fairly impressive haul (or maybe they simply succeeded in exceeding my expectations after driving them down). 8/15 will be very interesting.

  2. Not much on Johnson. Only 39 AB over last two seasons. Very fast, but has torn ACL in left knee twice in last two seasons, which is why so few AB. Relatively big kid for a speed demon at 6′-2″ and 195 pounds. Seems like a high risk project.

  3. With Johnson there is also the possibility of a Mormon mission for 2 years. With that and the knee he would seem a pretty risky signing for more than $100K. I am all for signing more toolsy players (because so many fail), but my first priority would be the two pitchers. Sampson seems the better value of the two if Workman is going to be in the 500-600K range.

  4. If they get both Workman and Sampson, it’s a B+ draft for me. Throw in Cedric Johnson, and it’s possibly an A- draft. Not that Johnson really tips the scale that much for me, but it’s more about the fact that the Phillies signed/went over slot for 3 HS guys who have a lot of potential.

Combine a draft like that with last year’s and things are really starting to look good in Phillies Pharm land. Balance would slowly being restored, which IMO, is a huge, huge, huge factor for success in MLB.

  5. It is my understanding the Phillies haven’t even made Workman an offer of more than slot. I also hear that his “demands are more in the 400-500K range. This kid is a bargain at those prices. I also understand he has gone back to pitching for his dbat team because he hated to sit the whole summer with no progress being made.

  6. Unknown states of no offer above slot yet as of 1 week ago. Hopefully, things change soon (they better). I read in a U of T article that Workman has a chance to be a stud and Unknown says that the demand is a bargain, so I’ll go along with that. Unknown, if you are lurking, how has Workman’s summer gone on the hill?

  7. I know that when Gillick and Arbuckle were there he was sitting at 92-93 and his curveball was real good. Right now I sort of think he will be a weekend starter at UT. It is my understanding there have still been no negotiations at all

  8. This Cedric Johnson is the real deal I did some research on him and many scouts said that he could of went as the second round if they got to see more than a limited DH role his senior year. Though his junoir year he batted over .600 with power. He has two brothers that are both in the minor leagues one in triple a and the leading the cubs rookie ball team in batting average and he is supposed to be the best of them. If we could get this kid kid signed and healthy we could be signing the seal of the draft or the biggest bust.

  9. It appears that the Phillies have walked away from signing Workman, choosing not to violate slot by some 70 K. This kid will be a stud at UT, and will not be so cheap in 3 years. Even the Braves violated slot, you will see that the teams with the best farm systems over the next number of years are paying little attention to Bud and his boys. High ceiling high school players should be worth more than college juniors, shouldn’t they ??????
