Kyle Drabek to have Tommy John surgery

Yep. Honestly, I’d actually prefer he just have the surgery now, fix what’s wrong, and then come back stronger and not have to worry about it anymore. Rehabbing does not seem to work, the majority of the time, so have the surgery and just be done with it. Recovery rate is very high, nothing to panic over, probably just better that it happened now rather than later.

  1. I’d rather him lose a year of development now before it’s really started than when he’s in AA or AAA and we’re waiting for him to arrive.

  2. This is the best time to have it. When he is ready to pitch in the majors, he will form a trio with Hamels and Savery that will win world series every year. He should have the surgery now

  3. i don’t think this even hurts his development. he’s basically had zero development in the majors. he always had a plus curve and a plus fastball. the only development would of been in his head and maturing has a human being. if anything this will humble him even more and come back mentally stronger than ever because of the extensive rehab he is going to have to endure.

  4. It’s ashame to see a young kid to have to go through this. But for a kid like Drabek, where most of the things in his life have come easy, this may be a true test of his character. He has not seen much physical adversity in his life, and now he’s faced with a career (and possibly life altering event/injury) where he needs to get focus and work hard in order to achieve his goals/dreams.

  5. To be honest, this isn’t a surprise. From everything I’ve read, he was very overworked in high school and threw a ton of pitches. I’d rather they catch it now and fix it as opposed to 3 years from now when you start planning around him at the big league level.

  6. Drabek was always a long-term proposition. I don’t think this changes anything in that regard; maybe it slows him down a little in terms of ETA in the majors, but I’m not even sure that’s the case. For a guy with the talent he supposedly has, “development” happens more from the neck up than otherwise; if he’s committed to his rehab, that work ethic will help him, and he can continue to learn in the meantime.

  7. I’m of the opinion that they should put him in the field. (Probably a flawed opinion as usual.)

  8. His value is far greater as a pitcher though, he has #1/#2 stuff, but he probably would have to shift off of SS, his high school position, which would lower his value as a position player below that of his pitching ceiling.

  9. Tough to find fault with the Phillies on this one. They can hardly be accused of abusing Drabek’s arm, he just hasn’t been in the system long enough. I would imagine this injury would have happened no matter how the Phillies handled his workload.

The only thing to quibble about is how long the team waited before scheduling surgery, but from what I’ve heard, it doesn’t sound like it was a complete tear, and the partial tear didn’t show up on the first MRI.

  10. I think the real interesting thing here, and I’ll try to find the article where I saw this, but comments from Mike Arbuckle, before this announcement, seemed to call out Drabek as being not tough – and that he needed to fight through the pain. Completely paraphrasing here – but he said something along the lines of “he’s never had pain before, he doesn’t know how to deal with it, but we’re sending him to a doctor to show nothing is wrong”. I’ll try to find the quote…

  11. I thought what Arbuckle said in that article was remarkably reasonable. A lot of folks (not you Steve B — I think you see it wasn’t a big deal) apparently interpreted his remarks as calling Drabeck a wimp or something. I don’t see that anywhere.
