The Phillies two picks remaining of their first 15 to not sign are 3rd rounder Brandon Workman and 12th rounder Julian Sampson, both RHP prepsters. I wouldn’t be overly concerned just yet, even though we are less than a month from the signing deadline. Half of the first round has yet to sign, and the general consensus is that teams wait as long as possible, as to not anger the Commissioners office. If you’re going to bust slot, you generally wait till the end, as to not set a precedent for other prospects who haven’t signed. The rumored numbers are about $600,000 for Workman and $250,000 for Sampson. Personally, I feel like the former has a very good chance of happening, the latter, I’m not so sure. If both guys sign, it will turn this draft into a B- in my book. I’m still not thrilled with how rounds 3-10 played out, but signing Jiwan James and Jacob Diekman is a definite plus, and if they grab Sampson as well, that’s a nice haul. We’ll see…

I’m reading an interesting piece by Scott Lauber – apparently Arbuckle says Cardenas doesn’t have the physical tools to play the left side of the infield, and is afraid his numbers wouldn’t stand out as a mediocre corner-outfielder. Here’s the link:

The Phillies undoubtedly want to avoid upsetting the commish, but there seems to be a lot more to it than that. Fear of offending Selig can explain the delay in signing Workman and Sampson. It can’t explain the Phillies minor presence in the ongoing signing of the premiere Latin American talent. The commish doesn’t seem involved in that heavy handedly. The bottom line seems to be an unwillingness to spend more on player development, despite a need to upgrade the farm.

Hopefully one or two of these latin players can be some lightning in a bottle for the farm system. The well is definitely dry above A-ball.

That represents quite a change for CD, who is both the eternal optimist and who was in a very advanced state of Gillick worship, particularly blessing the Garcia trade. I think his current article pegs things just about exactly right. We should be looking beyond 2007 to 2008. Gillick’s off-season was indeed disastrous. Garcia/Eaton were not money well spent and giving away Germano without even watching him through all of ST at a time Manuel knew/suspected both Gordon and Garcia were hurting was just really, really dumb. What we do with Workman and especially Sampson will indeed tell us whether or not the Phillies are at all serious about winning in the future.

Phil phan – where’d you hear that at? I know he’s had a little pain/discomfort in his elbow, but that’d be a really big blow to our rotation of 2009/2010 if he has to lose a year of development.
