Joe Savery signs

Well, maybe. This article has a headline that includes the word “reportedly”, yet it comes from Phillies.com. So, did he or didn’t he? I’ll assume he did, and if so, that’s one step closer to this draft being at least average, and probably a bit better. Maybe we should insert Savery into the rotation now.

  1. What I gathered from the “reportedly” thing is that the Phils are (for some reason) waiting until Tuesday to make the announcement. Still, it’s good that he is (reportedly) signed, and in a way, the delay was probably good for him since him might have allowed his arm to get a little rest.

Let’s hope this pick works out well for them

  3. I am glad that Savery signed, I would like to see us become more Padres-esque or LA Angels esque. The Padres because they always have great pitching and the Angels because they hoard pitching.

Question though, does anyone know the status of the “prospects” we got from Yankees last year? Are they any good?

  4. The prospects we got for abreu were Matt Smith LHP, C.J. Henry SS, Jesus Sanchez C, and Carlos Monasterios RHP

  5. Matt Smith was good in Sept 2006 0.98 ERA the lefty blew his arm out started in spring training, had Tommy John, C.J. Henry was picked by the Yankees with the free 1st round pick we gave them for signing John Leiber. He is a toolsy basketball guy, who after this year my take his Yankees signing money and run back to college basketball.

Sanchez and Monasterios are both Venezula young guys, possible prospects but not atm.

  6. Interesting I just looked at the red sox prospect website and it shows they have not signed 16 of 33, we have not signed 7 of 33 if Savery signs..

Interesting…maybe the website is not being updated.

  7. I havent looked at the bosox draft, but that could possibly be a result of the fact that we drafted alot more signable college players instead of taking risks on high schoolers with less signablity.

  8. Yes, wildcat, isn’t that what it always comes down to with this ownership, signability and dollars and cents. From reading this website, I have become more educated on the whole draft process and the Phils (apparent) cheap approach to drafting players. My guess is no way they sign both workman and the other guy whose name is escaping me they have yet to sign.

  9. plunts, although I agree with you you should look at most of the other teams and see what they drafted. The phillies drafted just about as many HSers as everyone else in the top 30 picks of course there is a few exceptions. But dont you think its better too take 10 guys who are GOING to sign and hopefully 1 or 2 is something special than picking 10 and only signing 1-3 of them and maybe 1 makes it? HSers look for the MONEY and no one NO ONE is spending this year not yet anyways. We actually over payed SLOT wise on a few guys already to make sure they signed. Im not saying we had a good draft but it wasnt much different from other clubs.

  10. Well Tuesday has come and pretty much gone. Where’s the announcement that Joe Savery has *officially* signed? The Phillies could drag the month of February into April it seems. Things don’t really have to be this hard do they?

  11. It’s official now. I’m sure James will be posting if soon. I’m curious to see how quickly he moves up the ladder, and it he mopes if things don’t go as planned.

Why am I a little bit concerned that this could be Pat Combs, v2.0. IIRC he boasted about a quick ascent, flew up to the majors and made a huge impact, then got injured and disappeared.
