D’Arby Myers update

Thanks to a loyal reader of this here blog, I’ve been fortunate enough to have been put in contact with D’Arby and just spoke to him for a few minutes. My cell phone reception is awful in my new apartment, but I’ll be getting in touch with him again soon to do a Q/A for the blog. He mentioned that he’s enjoying hitting leadoff, getting to see lots of pitches and work counts in his favor, and that the whole pro experience has been great so far. So, if you have a question you’d like me to include in the Q/A for D’Arby, send me an e-mail and put “QUESTION FOR D’ARBY” in the title of the e-mail, and I’ll try to touch on as many points as I can. He really seems to have his head on straight when it comes to playing the game, and he’s loving every minute of it. Couple that attitude with his baseball tools, and I think he’s going to turn into a pretty special player.

As of this writing, he’s hitting .362/.413/.431 with 14 runs scored.

  1. that’s exciting an interview with a top prospect in the organization, should make for a nice read. I really appreciate all the work you put into this site, it’s one of my favorites.

  2. If anyone is interested I have his GCL game used jersey up for auction on ebay. He is going to be a very special player and it is too bad I have to sell it. Money is tight. I tried to have a friend get him auto it in spring training but he said he wanted it for himself, so my friend did not give it to him to auto.

  3. Myers is 4-4 today with a RBI. He’s up to .382, how much longer are they going to keep him in Williamsport.

  4. Mike: Sure agree w you. Myers should move UP to Lakewood ASAP; also to be moved IMO: Mach at 3rd base to Clwtr FSL and Drew Naylor RHP to Clwtr FSL (or at least to Lakewood).

Note that Golson SEEMS to be getting it together. He’s hitting very well over his last dozen or so games. So maybe he and Myers would form 2/3 of our future OF.

Also, how long will the Phils keep Cardenas at Lakewood? If he keeps this up, IMO he should go to Clwtr FSL in no later than August.

    MOVE ‘EM UP!!

  5. I think Golson is hitting well now because he knows that Myers is rapidly gaining ground on him.

  6. Rushing a guy at this point isn’t a necessity. It’s important for a guy to struggle a bit at a level and learn to adjust, then gain confidence and move on. Myers finishing this year at Lakewood or Williamsport is inconsequential, as he’ll start at Lakewood next year. Mach might get a double jump to Clearwater.

  7. Well Myers got another hit and is up to .391. I think this league is giving him no challenges and should be in Lakewood soon.

  8. I was going to chime in that one approach to promotions is to bump guys up into pennant races–both as a reward for the player/s and an assist to the contending teams. But Williamsport, Lakewood, and Clearwater are all in about the same competitive position as of right now–winning percentage a bit north of .600, second place in their respective divisions.

Presumably this won’t be the case in a month, and I wouldn’t really want to promote anyone from, say, the NYPL to the SAL before early August anyway. So I guess we’ll see how it shakes out.

  9. Myers’ start just reinforces silliness of keeping him in extended ST after the numbers he put up in GCL last season.

  10. While I agree with James that rushing a guy isn’t necessary (especially with someone as young as Myers), but his performance might necessitate it. Granted, I keep hearing how he is very raw, so he may need some time to hone his skills.

And, hey, if Myers’ performance is lighting a fire under Golson’s butt, then good. Sometimes you need someone breathing down your neck to spur you on a bit. (Although, personally, that type of attitude isn’t exactly what I want in a player)

Oh yeah, and Mach cooled off yesterday – he had less than two hits in a game for the first time since his debut.

Two other things I noticed this morning about some 2007 draftees: D’Arnaud is stroking the ball nicely; and Mattair, while struggling a little with the bat, hasn’t made an error yet in ten games.

  11. Myers seems a better prospect than Brown and has certainly developed a lot faster. Brown has improved his OPS a bit from last year, so except for stolen base efficiency, his game does seem to at least be moving in the right direction. Brown and Myers were both expected to take a while to develop. Myers has surprised so much to the upside in the speed at which he has adapted to pro ball that I want to believe he has a really high upside. That doesn’t mean Brown won’t continue to develop and also be a valuable future Philadelphia Phillies OF. Brown has a size advantage over Myers, although he really hasn’t shown HR power yet.

He was said to be a very bright kid before they signed him.
That may be a significant factor in his rapid progress.

  13. How do you pronounce his first name? Is it pronounced like Dee-Arby or like “Darby” – the Irish pronunciation of a horse race, more akin to how you would pronounce D’artagnion.

  14. Yes, Darby is the future….I just talked to him yesterday, and he gave me some very interesting news….Im not going to spill it, Ill let him do that….But all of you are in for a treat.

  15. Ok, now do you morons see why you don’t promote someone with less than 100 at bats? Great tools but Myers is still EXTREMELY raw. Tough to hit when they figure out how to pitch to you and you have that many holes in your swing. He’ll be fine, but do not rush this kid…he has too much of an upside to ruin him by rushing him.

  17. I taught D’Arby in High School and he was a great student as well as a Great Young Man. I am proud of him and know that he will do well. I coach High School Baseball here in Georgia and I have been trying to get in contact with him to do a clinic for me. Hopefully my players will get the chance to see a player that is an All-Star in life as well as on the field.
