Durbin it is

The Phillies announced JD Durbin would get the call Friday against the Mets. Talk about being thrown into the fire. Durbin is out of options, so if he bombs out as a starter, they might try to stash him in the bullpen for a while, because if he’s sent down to AAA, he has to clear waivers again, and that seems unlikely. Good luck JD, you’re going to need it.

  1. I was reading the post about this over at http://beerleaguer.typepad.com/ and they mentioned “that since Durbin already cleared waivers, the Phillies have ‘secured waivers for the remainder of the waiver period,’ which means he won’t need to pass through waivers again when/if they send him back down. I could be wrong, but that’s my understanding. That’s why Clay Condrey didn’t need to pass through waivers a few weeks ago.”

I’m not that familiar with these rules either and it’s a little tedious to try to research them online, so I figured I’d check in here to get an explanation.

  2. The waiver process is one of the most confusing things in baseball. I think MAYBE if a player is on the 40 man and he isn’t being removed from the 40 man, then he won’t need to clear waivers. I guess since Durbin is on the 40 man, he might not have to clear waivers.
