Clearwater Threshers First-Half Wrap Up

The Clearwater Threshers earned their best first-half record in their short four-year history going 39-31.  The team had six players selected to the FSL All-Star game:  pitchers Carlos Carasco, Andrew Carpenter, Pat Overholt, OF/DH Jeremy Slayden, and catcher Lou Marson were elected by the managers in the league and Greg Golson was selected by the commisioners office to attend the game.

Closer Mike Zagurski who started the year with Clearwater was promoted to Reading after starting the season with a 1.10 ERA, 30Ks vs just 2 walks having given up just two runs.  Days later Zagurski was promoted to the major leagues where he continues to play.

Carlos Carrasco (6-2 / 2.84 ERA / 69.2 IP / 53K / 22BB) and Pat Overholt (4-6 / 3.82 ERA / 73.0 IP / 56K / 30 BB) have been promoted to Reading along with outfielder Mike Spidale ( .275 BA) , while the team has seen indielders Fidel Hernandez ( .247 BA) and Welinson Baez ( .238 BA and a league high 83 strikeouts) demoted to Lakewood.

New additions to the roster have been Javon Moran on a rehab assignment from Reading (completed 6/25) while moving up from Lakewood was Jason Donald.   Donald has a .308 BA in 19 games since moving up with a .575 SLG (3 HR / 2 3B / 3 2B).

Jeremy Slayden was the HR Derby champion at the all-star game, but has been put on the DL with a wrist injury just this week.

Josh Outman has had a lot of talk about being moved up this year and has been very impressive with a 2.70 ERA, a record of 7-3 with 83Ks vs 44BB in 89.0 IP this season.

  1. For years it always seemed to me like Clearwater was where our good prospects went to die, professionally speaking. I don’t have that sense with this bunch. Carrasco, Marson, Donald, Carpenter and Golson all should see big-league action, and at least two of them could have star potential. Whether the change is a result of better drafts, improved coaching or just more talented guys, it’s great to see.
