Midseason Review, Part 2

We’ll cover another batch of prospects today, looking at how they’ve fared in the first half of 2007. Again, a few reminders. The grades listed below were the grades assigned to the player prior to the start of this season, they aren’t midseason grades. I won’t assign a grade for 2007 until after the season, this is just kind of a one sentence overview of how each guy is playing this season so far. Any and all comments are welcome, as always.

The C+ Guys

Jacob Dempsey, OF – Released. This one kind of shocked me, and I never found out why he was released.

Charlie Yarbrough, 1B – Just started playing. Promoted to Lakewood.

Gus Milner, OF – Having a pretty good season at Lakewood, though he’s too old for the SAL.

Antonio Bastardo, LHP – Only 11 IP at Lakewood so far. The 14 K are nice, the 6 walks are too many.

Zach Cline, LHP – Released. Not sure why, he’s in Indy ball now.

Jason Donald, SS – Raised his stock perhaps more than any other prospect in the system. Dominated at Lakewood, holding his own at Clearwater.

Sam Walls, RHP – Injured, now in the GCL, presumably just to get back in game shape.

Andrew Cruse, RHP – Kind of disappointing performance. Decent K/9, passable BB/9, but he should be putting up better numbers considering his age.

Justin Germano, RHP – Don’t even get me started.

Jason Jaramillo, C – Had me believing after a torrid start, has tailed off a bit, and has shown very little power. Hit .345 in April, .143 in May and is hitting .293 in June.

The B- guys

Reymond Cruz, RHP – Was he released? Is he hurt? I don’t know.

Garrett Hill, RHP – Still at Lakewood, a disappointment, but his peripherals are good. 2.86 BB/9, 8.83 K/9, 0.26 HR/9, 1.16 GB:FB.

Matt Olson, RHP – Released. Don’t know why.

Darren Byrd, RHP – Disappointing at Lakewood. Too many walks, not enough K’s, but a good GB:FB ratio.

Carlos Monasterios, RHP – Up and down season so far at Lakewood. Decent in April, good in May, not so good in June.

Jeremy Slayden, OF – Having a good but not great season in Clearwater. Really needs to start to pound the ball a bit more or his grade will not improve. Age is still a factor here.

Mike Zagurski, LHP – Went from Clearwater to Philly in a month. Quite the meteoric rise.

Will Savage, RHP – Solid peripherals at Clearwater, good control and K rates, and equally good against lefties and righties.

Mike Costanzo, 3B – Another real slow start, way too many K’s, but he’s starting to heat up in his traditional second half style.

Pat Overholt, RHP – Tried as a starter, mixed results, and sent to Reading. His strength is still getting groundballs, but he needs to pitch more to that strength than he has in the last 6 weeks or so.

Michael Bourn, OF – Has served mostly as a pinch runner/defensive replacement in Philly. Hard to figure out his value going forward.

Heitor Correa, RHP – Short season ball.

Kyle Drabek, RHP – Up and down so far at Lakewood, and now dealing with some minor arm troubles. All in all, a decent first full season so far.

Lou Marson, C – A decent batting line, .289/.362/.363, and he’s young for his league. He mashes lefties to the tune of a .400 average with a .553 slugging %, but has little power against RHP.

  1. Reymond Cruz is listed on the DL for Williamsport. No idea what the problem is. You’re right on for all of your assessments so far!

  2. Well, with Bastardo’s performance tonight, he may have made up for those BB’s. 8 innings of shutout ball w/ 3 hits, 8 K’s and 2 BB’s. Give him a few more starts, but his ERA is at 0.95 after three starts.

  3. Oh, and four of those six walks came in one game in five innings. He’s gone fourteen innings since with four walks. Any chance that the four walks were first-game jitters?

  4. Just my .02, but I think that Jamarillo might rate a bit higher than a c+. To me, he probably projects as a platoon catcher with Ruiz, and his numbers are far better as a lefthanded hitter:

    .286 154 23 44 3 1 4 21 19 32 0 0 .379 .396 .775

Righthanded, he is hitting under .200 with a sub .600 ops (yikes), but the lefthanded numbers are certainly pretty decent.

Of course, all of this is a moot point if you tell me that his defense hasn’t been that great. My understanding is that it would be his defense and game calling that gets him to the majors.
