So I know the Greene’s, Quinn, and Walding are 4 prospects to watch. Who else on this list has a potential big upside?

    • bluethree says:

Maybe Yan Olmo making his stateside debut. He’s a pretty big kid though already 21.

    • Mitch_Rupert says:

I like Chase Numata at catcher. Not exactly sure how much he’ll hit, but looks real smooth behind the plate. Trey Ford showed the best raw power during BP today, could see him playing a regular DH role. Larry Greene got a pitch in on his hands during BP today and still hit it off the scoreboard in right-center (no small feat), and then in the next round he squared one up and hit it over the scoreboard. Scouting reports make Jordan Guth sound like an interesting pitching prospect, big frame, low to mid-90s fastball, just struggles with command. Overall this should be a fun team to watch for 76 games.

    • sam soap says:

Wasnt musser a name of interest when drafted?

  2. sam soap says:

You were reading my mind…i was just searching for it thanks!

  3. Mark says:

What ever happened to Kevin Walter?

  4. teabag says:

    No Braden Shull?

  5. Philly phil says:

    what about Carlos Tocci

  6. Anonymous VOR says:

Nothing exciting about the pitching staff. Mostly low round college pitchers. All of the bonus babies still in GCL. Walter, Nunez, Vargas, Shull, Thierren, Gueller, Watson and maybe Alec Rash still in GCL. About 4 million in bonuses competing for playing time in rookie league.

    • andyb says:

GCL will definitely have more on the pitching side as this Williamsport team is not benefiting from good HS pitching drafts the last couple of years before this year’s bounty. I am a little excited to see Ulises Joaquin as the scouts have been raving about his “electric” arm. Williamsport is a pretty aggressive placement for a not super old Latin American guy (age 19).

  7. Art D. says:

Watching that infield that contains Quinn, Walding, and T. Greene along with L. Greene in LF could show these guys who, ideally, would move up all together for ’15…or ’16. I.E., the “movable” infield. Plus LF.

Could be fun offensively for this team once they get rolling.

There appears to be several “beasts” in/around our system: big guys who the FO hopes will produce POWER for the big club. That is in addition to the offensive help from the infield guys in Wmsprt, etc.

Now for Clwtr GCL. When does that league begin?

  8. Anonymous says:

Assuming the batting order will be Quinn, T Greene, Walding, L Greene for the top 4?

    • Mitch_Rupert says:

Tracy wouldn’t hint at a lineup or pitching rotation today during media. My guess is they haven’t gone over it with the team yet. Only thing I know is Hoby Milner told me he’s starting out in the pen on about a 45 pitch count limit but they’re planning on moving him to the rotation at some point this season. If I make it to the workout tomorrow I’ll see if I can at least pry an opening day starter out of Tracy.

  9. Art D. says:

Seritella likely would play 1st base and bat 4th since he has that extra school experience…and to take pressure off of L. Greene. Maybe L.Greene will hit 3rd…? Or Walding. Hard to figure except Quinn at #1.

    • Murray says:

I’ll be stunned if Walding doesn’t hit third.

      • Mike Honcho says:

Why stunned? Have there been reports about his bat being that great in EST?

        • Murray says:

He hits third routinely for them, the kid can really play. They like the prospects hitting early in the lineup to get at bats. Quinn, Greene, Walding, and Greene, jr will likely hit in the top five with Seritella.

  10. Alan says:

Worth keeping in mind when the season starts that the NY-Penn League is a big, big pitchers league. A slugging percentage of .440 or so from a Larry Greene would be a great success.

  11. Philly phil says:

is Johnathan Knight in the GCL too oh and is he any good

  12. dougefresh says:

A new crop with expectations galore. The tough chore is picking the 1 or 2, if the Phils are lucky, that actually have ML impact 4 or 5 yrs from now and beyond. Amazingly, it is feasible to think none of them will succeed. Here’s hoping they beat the odds and there are 3 or 4 keepers.

    • Steve (Tampa) says:

Yep. Tomorrow starts an exciting time for Phans. Only half a season, and while no single player can possibly lose his prospect status with a poor showing at GCL or NYPL, conversely, a player who displays advance plate discipline and seems to play above the competition could have us saying, “Hey, we have something here!”

I’m hoping for one or two of these players to emerge. But of course, it often doesn’t happen at all.

  13. Anonymous says:

Hey Mitch, do you tweet? You are a wealth of info on this team, thanks.

    • Wolfey says:

      Yea, his handle is Mitch_Rupert

    • Mitch_Rupert says:

Sure do, as Wolfey said it’s @Mitch_Rupert … I’ll be there to cover the first seven games of the season until they hit the road for a week. The second and fourth games are in State College so I’ll be able to get some velocity readings, but unfortunately they still won’t put a gun up in Bowman Field. And if anyone is in northeast or central Pennsylvania, WNEP2 is broadcasting the game on Monday.

  14. marfis says:

Looking at the roster, it looks like 27, when the roster limit is 30. I count 12 position players and 15 pitchers, so , I guess, they add 3 position players by Monday. Maybe a back-up SS a little more of a defensive prototype, an INF-OF type and maybe another Catcher from when Ludy goes to Lakewood. Maybe more of a DH candidate among them. Lots of candidates , looks like alot of candidates for the GCL also, so maybe some releases this time.

Surprise by Delvin Perez an amateur signing from Puerto Rico who signed this offseason, and Ulises Joaquin who signed last season in VSL.

    • Anonymous VOR says:

Those 3 spots are probably being reserved for college draftees, Cameron Perkins(3B), William Carmona(DH) and Tim Carver(ss).

      • marfis says:

I was looking at Carver going to Lakewood like Ludy . S. Malcolm and C. Perdomo haven’t been offensive powerplants. Carver looks all right on offense and defense, I say.

I just counted the GCL candidates. I think , right now , it is on the roster limit of 35. If like it is said on here you consider K. Walter on the DL. I don’t look for guys I put on the rosters because nobody saw they were released yet, in Justin Long or Jake Smith. Looks to me like there would have to be some signings in the next day for there to be any releases at first.

    • Oldtimer says:

Brian Pointer is on his way to Williamsport. I hope he wont let that bring him down too much.

  15. marfis says:

Williamsport roster is up on milb.com and it’s exactly like this one. Somebody got it right.

I see nothing that says Pointer going to Williamsport . Not on WPT roster, nor in the SAL transactions , nor in the NYP transactions. Pointer still on Lakewood roster.
So, the basis for such information should be revealed. Especially if one has passed bad information before.

  16. marfis says:

Josh Warner scheduled to start tonight according to milb.com and the Crosscutters website. So, for now, the plan is for Warner to be the #1 starter.

  17. Clawsgirl says:

    Pointer off lakewood roster

  18. Anonymous says:

Chace Numata is great behind the plate, and the bat is coming around. Something great in the process!

  19. I don’t even understand how I ended up right here, however I believed this publish was great. I don’t recognize who you are however certainly you’re going to a well-known blogger in the event you are not already. Cheers!
