Phillies trade Jason Jaramillo

A catcher for catcher swap, Jason Jaramillo is gone, Ronny Paulino is in. Gotta say, this is a win for the Phillies. Pirates fans looking for info on Jaramillo should start here and here.

A note on Paulino. For his big league career, he’s thrown out 73 baserunners and allowed 165 SB. Defensive stats for catchers are really kind of hard to judge, but 31% CS is respectable. For comparison’s sake, Ruiz has 49 CS and 133 SB allowed, or 27%.

Update #2: If you have season tix at Lehigh Valley, you’ll get a full season of Lou Marson in 2009. I expect lots of pictures submitted. Thanks.

  1. Paulino has kinda trailed off since his rookie year where he posted a 96 OPS+. Still we traded Jaramillo and got something in return. Gotta figure that Coste is gone now.

  2. Love the deal. Paulino is a good offensive catcher and will split time with Ruiz in 2009.

Interesting to consider that this might be paving the way for Marson, rather than Coste, to become part of a bigger deal, maybe for Peavy???

  3. Just to follow-up.

I’ve read several accounts that claim the Padres have asked Peavy to consider waiving his NTC for 4 possible teams, the Cubs, Braves, PHILLIES, and 1 additional unidentified team…

Just maybe Peavy agreed to go to CBP?

  4. Paulino is not a “good offensive catcher”. Here’s his OPS+ breakdown for the last 3 years

    2006: 96
    2007: 83
    2008: 56

Granted its likely that he’ll bounce back to the 83-96 range but its no guarantee.

  5. We have zero chance to get Peavy, and I’d hope Marson isn’t traded. I think the org just realized that Jaramillo wasn’t in the plans and they wanted to get something for him. Paulino is arb eligible I think, Pittsburgh is locked in with Doumit, so I assume they just wanted a cheaper backup.

I think as far as Coste goes, this means they could either trade him or use him to pinch hit more, meaning we’d carry 3 catchers. But who knows.

  6. I think it means we’ll either trade Coste or outright him if we can’t get anything via trade. I could see them using him as a righthanded bat off the bench but he’s so slow and limited position wise (1B and C pretty much) that its kinda a waste of a roster space.

  7. Paulino is pretty much what we hoped Jaramillo would become, so it’s a good deal from that standpoint. He’s arbitration eligible this year, but he shouldn’t make much more than the minimum. It’ll be interesting to see what happens with Coste now.

3up3kkk: do you have a link for that? The only teams I’ve seen Peavy linked with are the Braves, Cubs, and the Yankees.

    [Comment From D Patrone]
You actually have heard he is considering the Phils?

3:28 Chuck Hixson: From what I’ve heard, the Padres have asked him to consider four teams. The Braves were one, the Cubs another and the Phillies are the third. What I haven’t heard is whether he would come to Philly.

  9. Actually everyone is on Peavy’s NTC list. So far, he as agreed to waive it for the Braves and Cubs. No reason to believe he can’t be convinced to waive it for other teams as well.

I do agree that the odds are slim.

Paulino was hurt most of this year, and struggled. He went to AAA to finish out the year and ended up with an OPS of .923 there. Oh btw Jaramillo barely squeaked out an OPS of over .700 in the same league this year.

I’d have to think this move is a precursor to something else. Another catch on the 40 man is going to be moved, the question is who.

  17. First off,

I completely agree with James. Peavy is in no way, shape or form coming. In terms of actual prospects, Jamarillo was heading nowhere soon. I think this was a great way for Rube to do something for the system before Marson (or even d’Arnaud – don’t forget that guy) is ready. I think this addresses two important points. One a Ruiz-lite as a backup (helps Chooch’s confidence and solidifies the position – no more decisions who plays based on defecse vs. offense), and the other helps Marson move up to AAA, and if he doesn’t adapt quickly becomes excellent trade bait. I know you guys don’t wanna hear this but we are set in the minors with catchers and Ruiz is not that old. So we have flexibility. I am just glad we no longer use dead-end prospects and let them pile up in AAA. It seems for a while we either had noone useful in AAA or had a bunch tweeners with AAAA talent but no real ceiling. That is not what healthy organizations do. If Rube can keep this going, in two years we will be fine. P.S.: Watch them go for someone ridiculous and sell the whole top 5 in the system for a Zito and make me look like a fool.

I do like this trade even though it probably means marson is a year away. It’s probably best but i’m excited to see what this kid can do.

  19. OK. Todd Zolecki reports that there seems to be no foolish desire by the Ruben Amaro Jr. administation to deal two top prospects for DeRosa. To reiterate, it seems HIGHLY unlikely Happ/Kendrick AND Donald will be traded.
However, Amaro’s work since he came in does pose an interesting question. Is he trading within the minor league prospects to make the system (and thus the future) stronger, or is he thinking about cheaply stocking the major league?
So far he traded two minor leaguers that were showing no “true” progress recently. Is he upgrading talent one prospect at the time, or is there a deeper long-term plan I am not seeing? You would expect the GM’s regine to be defined by quick big-name signings (or their failures), not prospect work…

Also says Donald and Carrasco are of 2 of our best players. That theory is now regarded as untrue. MLBTR says Philly close to signing Chan Ho Park. Good move all the way around.

  22. There is word that Amaro is really good friends with Jarmillo and wanted him to have a chance to play at the MLB level so he worked a deal out with PIT. The reason why PIT was ok with this deal is money and Paulino was not happy.

It was apparent that JJ was not going to start in AAA due to Marson and d’Arnaud moving up a level.

Given that left-field production is going to take a huge hit, and Marson’s apparent readiness, and Ruiz’s general offensive ineffectiveness, the time seems right for Lou to step in as a platoon player at the least.

  25. John. He has a full no trade clause. He hasn’t expressed interest in coming to Philly. He’d be a great addition to our rotation. But he doesn’t want to play “anywhere”, he only wants to be traded to Chicago. We’d have to empty out the farm system to get him. And he’ll cost 15M+ a year for four years starting in 2010. We have salary coming off the books after 2009, but we also will have more expensive players in Hamels, Utley, Victorino, and possibly Werth and Madson at that point. The Phillies aren’t made of money.

But Peavy isn’t the issue here.

  27. John, it seems to me like your entire argument is based on two premices. Your first idea is that the Phillies should simply throw cash around at all of their problems. First, this simply does not work, even if a team had unlimited resources (which, last time I checked, the Phillies do not). I think it has been proven time and time again that the best way to sustain success at the major league level is through the farm system. I point to the Braves and Yankees of the 90’s and the current Red Sox regime as examples. Your second argument, it seems, is that you believe anything can happen if you want it really really badly. This is also not true, obviously, as I am still not dating Jessica Alba or Scarlet Johannson. As for your comments on Peavy, I do not understand what your thinking is. You say, “if peavy wants to come here he will.” The problem is, as PP has stated many times, that Peavy does not in fact want to come here. But instead of blaming Peavy (even though this isn’t something that Peavy should receive blame for) you place the blame on Amaro and the cheap Phillies’ owners. It seems to be pretty cut and dry, what don’t you understand?

  32. To me it sounds like a good trade. We know what we had in Jarmillo, and it wasn’t enough to promote him to the bigs before Marson. Paulino has a higher upside than Jarmillo, but maybe a little more risk due to attitude. If Paulino pans out, great we get a really servicable guy we can use for awhile and then trade for more pieces. If he doesn’t work out we’ll just bring up Marson a little earlier.

Amaro Jr. 2 for 2 in my book….I really like that he’s taking it to this level when evaluating the franchise. A lot of GM’s are just looking for the big splash. They’re worried about their jobs, and their image. I think Ruben knows that management has his back and that this is his job for a while and that he can really sit down and think about the long term for this team….and do the little things that add up. This is actually getting me excited for the rule 5 as well!

He’ll be a backup but he’ll get to play in 70 games unless the starter gets dinged. There’s not much pressure. No one expects the Bucs to go anywhere. It’s basically a AAA team playing Major League teams.

I like the Paulino trade because I’d like to see Marson play everyday. He won’t do that in Philly (this year). AAA will give him full time play.

I’m not totally enamored with Paulino, I hope they have some sort of trade in mind for him.

That makes a lot of sense. I had Marson pegged to start MLB this season, he is ready. I’m sure he will move up at some point in 2009 and hope he tears it up in AAA and all the young catcher prospects move up a rung.

Definately D’Arnaud and I think Naughton ready to be tested at the next Minors Level.

It would be very interesting to see both D’Arnaud and Naughton Platoon on the same team by end of 2009 ??

  46. Airborne, I’m wondering why you think Jaramillo will be a better player?

He looks more like a AAAA player than anything else. He hasn’t had an OPS over 711 since low A ball.

  47. For one think Paulino reminds me of another catcher we thought might be the answer, Rod something or was it Sal something. A couple of questions, is Paulino a vast improvement over Coste for the backup slot? I don’t think so. Will Paulino be in Philadelphia beyond this season? I doubt it. So what’s the point of the trade? Trading any position player for someone at the same position just doesn’t make sense. I didn’t think the Golson-Mayberry trade made much sense either. Who’s determined that Golson couldn’t become a 20 to 25 hr hitter. I think he will someday.

As for Jaramillo being better then Paulino. Well Jaramillo has shown marked improve in pitch recognition as his walks to plate appearance has improve steadly since being signed. A sign he has an idea what he’s doing each at bat. His strike out totals are also very good and indicate good plate discipline. Jaramillo has a cannon for an arm which sometimes lacks accuracy, is very good at boxing pitches, and keeping the ball in front of him. Most of all him being a switch hitter is a plus that affords a team to use him in many more situations.

  48. Paulino is a stop gay most likely until next year when Marson is ready. And yes Paulino is an improvement on Coste, he breaks down after the first few months of solid hitting. If you don’t believe me check Coste’s Post All star splits the past two seasons. He becomes useless, because his defense and game calling aren’t very good. Love the guy, but Paulino is an upgrade.

Also Jarmaillo’s walks were down and strike outs up this year, while finishing with the exact same OPS of .711 while repeating AAA. I can’t find Jaramillo’s CS% from this year, but he had 16 errors this year, which is pretty brutal for a guy who needs + defense to be a productive big leaguer. I just don’t see much reason to believe he has anymore upside.

    Like

  49. I should clarify, Paulino should be an upgrade if he plays to a reasonable level that is expected out of him. I don’t think a .275/.335/.385 ish hitter is too much to ask from him. I expect Ruiz to have a better year, maybe that’s just wishful thinking though.

    Like

  50. I don’t see this Jaramillo is a better athlete than Paulino stuff. That’s about as far off as it gets. Paulino may not always get results as far as stats go, Talent wise he’s got it all. As opposed to what?, a player who waits on walks/ who only is around a .250 type hitter when playing near every day in the minors, but who supposedly will do better as part-timer in MLB? What of a switch-hitter who is not that proficient from either side. Better to use a proficient hitter left-on-left or right-on-right.

    Like

  51. Paulino is an upgrade over Coste simply because Coste is a bad defensive catcher.

As far as the Jaramillo/Paulino comparison, Jaramillo has only had 1 minor league season comparible to Paulino’s rookie season in the majors, and that was in the Sally league 4 years ago so that tells me that Paulino has more ability.

Now if the Phillies get the same lazy guy the Pirates had last year, then Jaramillo will certainly be better in the long run.

Either way, both Paulino/Jaramillo were going to be stop-gaps until Marson takes over anyway.

    Like

  52. When a guy is 6’2″, 245lbs that might indicate a bit of a weight issue. I watched some video of Paulino. It appears he has a slow stroke and was easily fooled. His hits were going to right field with not much authority. Defensively he looked very average.
I’m not against Jaramillo going somewhere else because I think in the long run Marson and D’Arnuad are the future. But for another catcher seem pointless. If Coste isn’t going to be part of the team or envolved in some trade why is he taking up a spot on the 40 man? A lot of mixed message around the catching position.
