Hit:  40 – needs to refine his approach and strike-zone judgement

Power:  60 – raw power

Arm:  70 – as strong an arm as just about any catching prospect in the game

Defense:  50 – his defensive tools remain a work in progress

Overall :  55 – Has shown progress with his catching skills.  Alfaro has played some first base in games and done some work in the outfield, and he is athletic enough to handle such a move if it’s necessary.

Profile:  Alfaro arrived in Clearwater while still on the DL and worked out at the Complex.  I saw him take his first live BP on a field adjacent to a GCL game.  He displayed his massive power to left, left center, and center fields.  He has an impressive physical build.  During 2016 spring I watched him throw lasers to second base from behind home plate during drills with the other catchers.  His arm is both strong and accurate.

Alfaro posted a .285/.325/.458/.783 slash at Reading in 2016 with 15 HR in 404 AB.  Alfaro defense has been questioned, but he had a very respectable .993 Fielding Pct. with 6 errors and 7 passed balls.  He threw out 44% of potential base stealers (33 of 75).
