Everybody played last night, but only Reading was able to win. Lehigh Valley got crushed by Buffalo. Reading coasted over Bowie after a big first inning. Jersey Shore lost a heartbreaker against Bowling Green in a walk-off. And, Clearwater looked sloppy in a loss to Daytona.
Clearwater (13-12) lost to the Daytona Tortugas, 6-1.
Oswald Medina (4.95) pitched well for a couple of innings then allowed 3 runs on 5 hits (including a solo HR), a walk, and hit batter in four innings. Carlos Bettencourt (1.80) pitched two innings and gave up one run on 2 hits (solo HR) and a walk. Cam Wynne (0.66) pitched two innings and gave up his first earned run on 3 hits (solo HR). Alex Garbrick (2.51) pitched one inning and gave up a run on 2 hits.
The Threshers scored their run in the first inning on an RBI single by Lee Hao Yu. Kendall Simmons had led off with a walk but was forced at second on a bunt attempt by Yhoswar Garcia. The first of several questionable plays. He bunted toward third but got it too close to the pitcher who threw to second (itself a questionable decision) for the force on a very close play. The people around me thought it was a busted sacrifice attempt, but I know he was trying for a hit. Garcia then stole second on the next pitch for his 21st theft of the season. Garcia was balked to third before another pitch was thrown. And, Lee lined an RBI single to score Garcia. During the next at bat, the catcher dropped a ball between his feet that rolled slightly behind him. Lee broke for second and was thrown out. ( a second questionable decision).
Later in the game, a runner was doubled off second after stealing the bag, on a line drive caught by the second baseman. A lot of weak contact led to 16 outs on groundballs and another out on a pop up in foul territory.
Garcia (21), Lee Sang (5), and Azuaje (11) each stole a base. The Threshers hit into 2 double plays. Sanchez (home) and Garcia (second) had outfield assists. Garcia’s occurred as a runner crossed the plate. The home plate umpire made such a dramatic out sign at the plate that I thought he was signaling the out at second happened before the runner crossed the plate. But, the run was counted.
The Tortuga’s catcher is Wilfred Astudillo. He’s the younger brother of Willians Astudillo a former Phillies farmhand and recent Minnesota Twins fielder. He looks taller at 5″11″ but has the same round shape at 209 pounds. He also looks like he might be almost as hard to walk and strike out as his brother. In 669PA in his first 4 seasons, he has 54 walks and 76 strikeouts.
Lehigh Valley (17-14) lost to the Buffalo Bisons, 14-3.
Ricardo Sanchez (0-1, 7.56) was allowed to throw 32 pitches to record one out in the first inning. He gave up 9 runs on eight hits and a walk. Joe Gatto (3.86) allowed 2 inherited runners to score and lasted 1.2 innings with a line of 1.2 innings pitched, one run, 3 hits, and a walk. Jeff Singer (4.05) tossed two scoreless innings with 2 hits. Dillon Maples (2.16) gave up 2 runs in 1.1 innings on 2 hits and 3 walks. Jonathan Hennigan (2.08) stranded an inherited runner and pitched 1.2 scoreless innings with no hits or walks. Nick Duron (2.39) allowed 2 hits but no runs in one inning. And, infielder Yairo Munoz pitched an inning.
The IronPigs scored 2 runs in the first on a 2-run single by Will Toffey. They scored one run in the third on an RBI single by Edgar Cabral. Austin Wynns went 2-4 with a HBP and Toffey went 2-5 with a run scored, triple, and 2 RBI.
Reading (12-16) beat the Bowie Baysox, 6-2.
Reading jumped out to a six-run first and five pitchers kept the Sox in check. Noah Skirrow (3.27) pitched 3.2 innings and gave up one run on 4 hits and 2 walks. He struck out six. Mike Adams (8.56) stranded 3 inherited runners and went 1.1 innings allowing 2 hits and a walk and striking out three. Billy Sullivan (5.00) pitched an inning and gave up a run on no hits and 3 walks. Bubby Rossman (5.93) pitched an inning with a walk and 2 Ks. “New guy” Ofreidy Gomez (0.00) pitched the final two innings, allowed a hit, and struck out three.
The Fightin’ Phils first inning went walk by Simon Muzziotti, single by Jhailyn Ortiz (which ended with runners on second and third), 2-run single by Aldrem Corredor (2-0), walk by O’Hoppe, out, walk by Vito Friscia to load the bases, sac fly by Ali Castillo (3-0), pitching change, walk by Jonathan Guzman to re-load the bases, and a bases-clearing double by Freylin Minyety (6-0). They only managed 3 more hits the rest of the way.
Jhailyn Ortiz (.235) went 2-4 with a run scored.
Jersey Shore (9-17) lost to the Bowling Green Hot Rods, 4-3 in a walk-off.
Matt Russell (4.97) pitched four innings and was charged with an unearned run on 4 hits and 2 walks. Andrew Schultz (9.82) pitched one scoreless inning and allowed a hit. Jhordany Mezquita (2.51) pitched 0.2 innings and gave up a run on 3 hits (a solo HR). Carlos Francisco (5.23) stranded an inherited runner and pitched 1.1 scoreless innings – no hits, 3 walks. Dominic Pipkin (7.88) gave up a run in one inning on 2 hits and a walk. Erubiel Armenta (5.14) only retired one batter before giving up the winning run on 2 hits. Mezquita and Pipkin werecharged with blown saves.
The BlueClaws scored single runs in the third, fifth, and eighth innings taking leads in both the fifth and eighth. They tied the game in the third on a sac fly by Andrick Nava. They went ahead with a run in the fifth on a single by DJ Stewart. And, they retook the lead with a run in the eighth on a triple by Johan Rojas.
Jersey Shore had just 4 hits, 2 by Stewart, and 3 walks. Stewart (9) and McCarthy Tatum (3) each stole a base. Rojas had an outfield assist at second base.
