The guys won three games again last night with no losses. Lehigh Valley held the Mets to one run, Reading outscored Portland, and Clearwater outplayed Dunedin.
We have two first-place teams in the organization. Lehigh Valley is in a three-way tie for first place in the International League East Division. And, the formerly 1-8 Threshers climbed into a tie for first place in the Florida State League West Division.
The Threshers have some of the best pitching in the FSL. They just added Eiberson Castellano who I said looked good at the Complex this week and predicted might be promoted later in the season. Didn’t expect it to be this quick.
Francisco Morales will be activated Sunday as the 27th man for the Phillies doubleheader. It could turn into a longer stay, one that includes pitching in games and not just sitting in the bullpen, we hope. But, knowing the mana …
Clearwater (13-10) beat the Dunedin Blue Jays, 6-2.
Andrew Painter only threw four innings last night. Probably because of his 71 pitches thrown of which he threw 50 strikes (70.4%). In those four innings, Painter (0.00) allowed 2 hits, 2 walks, and struck out seven. An unearned run scored on an error by Jamari Baylor. Gabriel Yanez (1-1, 2.92) pitched two innings and gave up a run on 2 hits. Malik Binns (1.93) pitched two scoreless innings walking one and striking out one. Rodolfo Sanchez (2.61) gave up a hit and a walk in one inning of work.
The first-place Threshers led from the second inning on. They scored a run in the second when Alexeis Azuaje singled with one out and stole second. Throwing errors by the catcher and center fielder gifted him third and home. They added a run in the third on Lee Hao Yu’s RBI double. After the Blue Jays closed to within one, the Threshers were gifted another run in the fifth on a wild pitch. With the lead back to one run, the Threshers benefitted from some more shoddy play by the Jays in the eighth when they scored a run on a bases-loaded walk to Herbert Iser and 2 more runs on a fielding error.
Coach Marty Malloy was ejected after the third Thresher was hit by a pitch. They were the seventh, eighth, and ninth Threshers hit by a pitch this series v. two that our guys hit. Lee was in a little distress after being hit but stayed in the game.
The Threshers only managed 3 hits but also garnered 7 walks plus those 3 hit batters.
Lee (.295) went 2-4 with a HBP, double, and triple, run scored, and RBI. Azuaje (9), Yhoswar Garcia (20), and Baylor (8) each stole a base. Baylor (2) was also caught stealing.
Lehigh Valley (17-12) beat the Syracuse Mets, 4-1.
Joe Gatto (3.65) pitched two shutout innings, walked two, and struck out four. Jeff Singer (4.76) pitched two innings and allowed a run on 2 hits and a walk. Jonathan Hennigan (2-0, 2.30) pitched three shutout innings, gave up 2 hits, walked one, and struck out three. Tyler Cyr (2.89) struck out two in a clean inning. Connor Brogdon (1.35) picked up his second save striking out the side in the ninth.
The IronPigs scored all four of their runs in the third inning on an RBI double by Drew Maggi, an RBI single by Nick Maton, an RBI double by Darick Hall, and an RBI triple by Dustin Peterson.
Reading (10-16) beat the Portland Sea Dogs, 6-4.
Jack Perkins (8.20) pitched five innings and gave up one run on 3 hits and 2 walks. He struck out four. McKinley Moore (4.61) pitched 1.2 innings and gave up 3 runs on 4 hits and a walk striking out three. Billy Sullivan (1-0, 4.50) got the win but blew the save allowing 2 inherited runners to score. In 1.1 innings, he gave up 2 hits and struck out two. Bubby Rossman (6.39) earned his first save with a one-walk inning.
The Phils scored three runs in the first inning on a 3-run HR by Josh Ockimey. They added an insurance run in the seventh on an RBI double by Vito Friscia. After Sullivan allowed the Dogs to tie the game in the bottom of the seventh, Ockimey broke the tie with a 2-run HR in the eighth.
Ockimey went 2-4 with 2 HR (3) and 5 RBI. Friscia had 2 outfield assists both at the plate.
Jersey Shore (8-15) v. the Hudson Valley Renegades rained out. Makeup on June 8th.
