Phillies Affiliates’ Recap (9/05/2021)

Box Score Recap

Sorry, just a short stack tonight.  Lehigh Valley won beating on an old friend.  Reading couldn’t come all the way back from a bad first inning.  Jersey Shore got their butts kicked.  Clearwater hung tough for most of the game before losing.  The FCL and DSL don’t play on Sunday.

Lehigh Valley (48-58) beat Syracuse, 9-6.  Adonis Medina gave up 5 runs (3 ER) in 5.1 innings on 8 hits.  Jeff Singer struck out two in 0.2 innings to close out the sixth, but he also allowed both runners he inherited to score.  Mauricio Llovera gave up a run in three innings on 3 hits.  The IronPigs walked no batters.

Adam Haseley went 0-5.  Nick Maton went 1-3 with a HR, 2 walks, and 2 RBI.  Mickey Moniak went 1-5 with a triple.  Cornelius Randolph went 1-1 as a pinch hitter.  Alec Bohm hasn’t been in the lineup since exiting last Sunday after being hit by a pitch 7 days ago.

Jerad Eickhoff came in with a 7-1 record and imploded against the IronPigs who nailed him for seven runs in 3.2 innings.  

Reading (44-64) lost to Hartford, 5-4.  Francisco Morales couldn’t get out of the first inning and gave up all five Hartford runs on 3 hits and 3 walks.  Tyler Carr came in and stranded an inherited runner and pitched 3.1 innings allowing only one walk.  Nate Lackney pitched two scoreless innings but allowed 2 hits and 3 walks.  Aneutys Zabala allowed just one hit and hit a batter in two innings.  

Matt Kroon went 2-5.  Dalton Guthrie had to leave the game after being struck by a pitch in the third inning.  The starter hit two more before being lifted.  Hartford hit another batter later in the game.  Reading didn’t hit back until Zabala hit a batter in the eighth.  I guess the unwritten rules are in Spanish.  Logan O’Hoppe went 0-3.  Chris Cornelius went 1-4 with a HR and 2 RBI.

Jersey Shore (49-57) lost to Aberdeen, 20-1.  Nothing to see here, move along.

Okay, Jhordany Mezquita gave up 7 runs in 2.2 innings, but no walks.  Carlos Francisco gave up 2 runs in 2.1 innings.  Mark Potter gave up 3 runs in one inning.  JP Woodward gave up seven runs (all unearned, but really, seven?) in 0.2 innings.  Jonas De La Cruz gave up one in 0.1 innings ut allowed both inherited runners to score.  Tom Sutera did well, one hit in one inning, no walks, no runs.

Hunter Markwardt hit a HR in the second to give the BlueClaws a 1-0 lead that they held for an inning.  Four other guys hit singles.  End of highlight reel.

Clearwater (47-56) lost to Lakeland, 4-1.  Rodolfo Sanchez pitched three scoreless innings.  He gave up 2 hits and a walk.  Cristian Hernandez pitched 2.1 innings and gave up 2 runs on 5 hits and 2 walks.  NDFA Alex McKenney pitched 2.2 innings and gave up 2 unearned runs on 3 hits and a walk with 4 strikeouts.

NDFA Freylin Minyety hit his second HR to give the Threshers a 1-0 lead in the sixth inning.  He went 1-2 with a walk.  Simone Muzziotti went 1-4 with a triple.  #13 pick Jared Carr went 1-3 with a walk.

FCL Phillies (20-11) no game scheduled.

DSL Phillies Red (22-16) and  DSL Phillies White (24-13) do not play on Sunday.

  2. Do not know what to make of O’Hoppe at this stage….is he ready for a break out as a top MLB.com/BA 100 prospect and could he actually be ready for the majors next season sometime. He just keeps churning out the numbers.

    1. He’s doing really well, but could probably use at least a couple of hundred at bats in AA and then we can see where he stands. If he continues to progress, yes, a September call-up next year is possible, but they are probably going to want him to get nearly at full year in AAA in 2023. There is literally no room for him right now (unlike Marchan, I don’t want O’Hoppe being the back-up guy for any more than a year or so) and he so long as he’s developing in the minors, all is good.

      1. Agree..O’Hoppe need to play on a regular basis…not back-up..
        And it would not surprise me if Trader Dave decides yet to trade one of Marchan or O’Hoppe since their value seems to be climbing.
        There are just so few teams of the other 29 now, that really need catching…many have an established veteran (late20s-early30s) in place….or a first or second year catcher there….or even a top prospect on the way in their system.

        1. I also think one of Marchan or O’Hoppe is likely to be traded. Ideal scenario to me is Marchan starts in AAA next year and O’Hoppe in AA; at least that way both of them will get at-bats before one or both of them get promoted.

          1. I doubt the Phillies are going to get value for Marchan or O’Hoppe, especially if the Phillies are that high on them.

            Marchan is either going back to Lehigh or being the backup for 2022. There’s absolutely no rush for O’Hoppe with JT under contract for 4 more years. If O’Hoppe forces his way into the lineup in the future, that is a good problem to have. We’ll cross that bridge when we get to it.

  3. Morales has to be the most disappointing prospect this season. Really bad season across the board. Can’t understand how his command went backwards after having the entire 2020 season to work.

    1. Sometimes a season like this is not a bad thing……maybe it will now make him more determined to correct whatever he is doing wrong….or maybe just listen to advice more attentively, absorb it and then work on it…

        1. Morales would benefit from a move to the pen, where he can focus on commanding just the FB and slider.

            “……..Morales remains on the starter/reliever fringe, and I think the latter is more likely. He has a traditional power pitcher’s fastball/slider combination, while the upper-80s changeup (it was 87-89 during 2020 instructs) remains firm and unrefined, as does his control. Morales is a good athlete — he’s sinewy and strong — while his delivery is violent and difficult to repeat. One of those will usurp the other and dictate what happens to Morales’ role. I think he’ll be a ninth inning bully. From a size and athleticism standpoint, I think Morales is very similar to prospect-era Dylan Bundy and Daniel Espino, who were better executing a deeper repertoire at the same age. (Fall Instructional League)”

            He had a stretch…last part of June until the first week in August (six weeks or so) were he showed his promise and potential coming around…then it dissolved the last 5/6 games.
            Hopefully he can resolve his control issues and he should repeat Reading next spring..

            1. Probably true. Although the fewer pitches he has to focus on, the more likely he is to develop consistency.

            2. Serious question, I know that is the default answer for pitchers with crappy command but does that really work? Don’t they just become relievers with crappy command? I honestly don’t understand how moving to the bullpen helps a pitcher with poor command.

        2. I think he’s probably still top 10 because our system is bad, as long as his stuff is the same. Definitely stock down but he’s still only 21. He should have been in Hi-A this year; not sure why they never dropped him down. I think he should be given about half of next season to see if he can figure things out as a starter.

            1. Think you’re being generous. He had 5 good starts in a row and 2 other good starts outside of that all season; and in one of them he still walked 4 guys. So he’s made 21 appearances, maybe 7 of them weren’t bad. He has a 7.38 ERA in a league he’s young for after missing a full season.

            2. Yeah he had plenty of inconsistencies ….that 10 game stretch he did average a Game Score of 55 …which is a little above average ..and for a 21-year old in AA that is not terrible.

              But taken on a whole ….all his starts collectively….he had a poor year.
              Like you say he is young and repeating Reading next season will be a challenge and may be good for him, .

          2. Another massive massive development failure by this org. Young pitched with elite stuff and they can’t develop him at all. Just a complete disaster.

  6. Is there something going on with Bohm other then the loss of confidence in his skill set? I thought I’d see him in the lineup more at AAA and I’m not seeing that.
