2019 Draft

This is the Phuture Phillies forum for discussion of the amateur draft and J2 signing period that are about 3-4 months down the road.   I’m providing this space for those who are ready to enter discussion about this year’s crop of prospects.  You can place video, scouting reports, or just comments here.  You can reference these weekly discussions on the menu above.

This space is for the discussion of prospects in the upcoming draft and J2 signing season.  This is NOT a space for you to continue complaining about past picks and the past/current draft philosophy.  That horse has been beaten to death in  weekly open discussions.  If you must, keep it there.

    Scouting Report from last summer:
    “…. (RHB) Hinds (6’4″, 210 lbs) played up last summer, … standout tool is his prodigious power … strength was on display at the Under Armour All-America Game last July, as the then 17-year-old snapped his wood bat over his knee with relative ease when frustrated with his performance in the homerun derby. Currently a shortstop, Hinds may soon grow off the position,…. arm would be an asset at either spot (3rd or cornerOF), although his below average speed could make him a better fit for the hot corner. Hinds is an LSU commit …”

    …IMO, do not see Phillies going with another variation of the first name of Rhys, Rece or even Reese….not with Bohm in the system.

      Yeah, the Phillies may just want to allow other teams to select the top position players while they hit on their arms picks, then either trade for them later or sign them as free agents, maybe the arbitration process will be shortened by then.

  2. This is not my area of expertise, so I will not be disputing anybody’s picks. I’ll rely on Hinkie, and trust his judgement, but I’ll also trust Klentak and PHIL. The Phillies line up and pitching staff is loaded for the foreseeable future, so I would hope that they lean toward a HS player that they can take their time with.

    1. No, they’ve not shown they can identify and develop a H.S. hitter. We have SOOO many misses on first round H.S. picks. We also aren’t nearly as loaded as you think we are today. We aren’t even, and shouldn’t be, the favorites to win the NL East. We have interesting young pitchers after we get past the gem who is Nola, but will be lucky if 2 of them truly make it and then we still need to replace Arrieta in the rotation in a year or two. If we have a shot at a solid college starting pitcher, that REALLY is something the organization needs. Even if we draft a good one and he develops smoothly, he won’t arrive in Philly until Arrieta is gone. The guys we have working their way up the minor league starting rotations can replace whomever of Pivetta/Eflin/VV don’t make it. We don’t have a stand-out SP prospect in the minors today — no Hamels or Nola or even Sixto. Medina and Howard — solid prospects, not looking like #2 SPs. Draft a college SP with that ceiling.

  4. allentown, I agree completely with you. I want the highest rated College SP. No to HS bats, you are correct. We don’t evaluate them well enough. HS Pitchers are very risky, but I will take the next Cole Hamels. I don’t know who that is, however. I am hoping that Median and Howard have great seasons and show that they are potential #2s. I don’t really think we have high ceilings otherwise.

      1. LHPs Zach Thompson and Nick Lodolo might be available by the time the Phillies make the pick — my approach is still get the BPA regardless of the time and need. So if Brennan Malone, Carter Stewart and Spencer Jones are available, I’ll get them regardless of the risks. With teh farm deep in low ceiling and high floor prospects, Johnny A. need to start putting his bets on high risk, high rewards prospects.

        1. rocco – You can never have enough pitching. I’m real curious to see how Gowdy does, and if that affects the Phillies line of thinking (pitcher or hitter).

  6. any thoughts on Flo St’s Drew Mendoza or Flo’s group of Dyson, Dalton, Langworthy, McConnell? Thinking about watching Flo St vs Flo tonight.

    1. Mendoza is probably the left handed version of Alec Bohm….but without the contact ability…he has the size and power…..not sure the scouts are high on his glove at third.
      Dyson…power arm for sure and will be there when the Phillies draft. every year the Gators always have good pitchers like Vandy.
      McConnell…read one report..he was once comp to Troy Tulowiztki…stays healtyh should be a late first /Round A- CBA or 2nd round pick.
      Wil Dalton…power LHB OFer….but what is going on this year with him? Must have some sort of injury or nagging ailment early on. He needs to get it going
      Langworthy…..probably gets drafted in the later rounds between 7th and 15th round……does not hit for average and his smaller than the average OFer.

  7. Will Wilson, NC State SS/2B is the top choice of guys likely available at 14. Better than Mendoza of FSU offensively or defensively. Max effort every play.

  8. Potential International Signing?

    Yhoswar Garcia, OF, Venezuela
    Team: Phillies

    Garcia has an exciting tool set in a lean, athletic 6-foot frame. He’s a plus-plus runner who defends his position well in center field with a strong arm. He’s a righthanded hitter who has also performed well in games against professional pitching, with a hit-over-power offensive profile. If he retains his speed and keeps hitting the way he has recently, he could develop into a player along the lines of Nationals center fielder Victor Robles. Garcia trains with Roberto Vahlis.

    1. Been reading about this kid for a little while. If he’s a Robles comp, we have something to look forward to: OF/IF combo of the “Garcia brothers”, maybe by 2022?

  9. Of all the tools, imo speed is the least important unless they are a true base stealer, eg Roman Quinn. The difference between a 40 speed guy and a 60 speed guy is just not material imo. Has so little impact on the game.
