Clearwater Threshers Recap – 9/1/2018

Box Score Recap

The Clearwater Threshers (77-59) beat Fort Myers, 5-2 in ten innings.  Bailey Falter (2.69) provided an old fashioned quality start.  He allowed two runs in seven innings on 5 hits and a walk.  He struck out three and had a 66.3% strike-rate.  Treveor Bettencourt (0.53) earned the win with two scoreless innings.  Jake (Jakob with 3 Ks) Hernandez (2.80) earned his fifth save by striking out the side in the ninth.

The Threshers collected 12 hits.  They tied the game with 2 runs in the sixth inning on Edgar Cabral’s 2-run HR 6).  They struck for 3 runs in the tenth on RBI singles by Henri Lartigue (.251), Mickey Moniak, and Cabral.

Cabral (.252) had 3 hits, a HR (6), and 3 RBI.  Brian Mims (.318) went 3-4 with a run scored. Jose Gomez (.223) and Moniak had 2 hits each.  The Threshers went 6-15 with RISP but struck out 14 times.

The win insures that the Threshers will have the best overall record in the FSL, and pushed Fort Myers to the edge of elimination as they trail first place Charlotte by one game with one to play.

Lehigh Valley (83-55)  Drew Anderson (9-4, 3.87) gave up a first inning run then shut down Rochester thru six innings.  The IronPigs went on to defeat Rochester, 2-1.  Danny Ortiz () provided the offense, a 2-run single in the third inning.  Anderson and the bullpen made that margin stand up.

Anderson limited the Red Wings to 3 hits and 2 walks while striking out five.  He allowed one hit after the first inning.  Tom Windle (4.25), Edgar Garcia (3.86), and Pedro Beato (3.04) held Rochester to three hits thru three, shutout innings.  Beato secured his franchise record extending 35th save.

The IronPigs collected 9 hits, all singles, and 6 walks.  J.P. Crawford (2.45 went 2-5 with 3 strike outs.  Joey Meneses (.315) went 2-4.  The ‘Pigs went 2-7 with RISP, and left 9 on base.

Reading (64-71) lost to Trenton, 3-0.  Tyler Viza pitched a complete game but lost to the Trenton Thunder, 3-0.  Viza (3-5, 2.75) pitched all eight innings and held the Thunder to one earned run on 5 hits and a walk.  He struck out five.  Viza allowed three singles through the first six innings.  Two of the runners were wiped out by Deivi Grullon, one on a pickoff and one on a stealing attempt.  The Thunder finally broke thru with a lead off  HR in the seventh inning.  They added two runs in the eighth after an error, a walk, and a two-out, 2-run double.

The Phils collected five hits.  Jose Pujols (.274) and Jan Hernandez (.265) had 2 hits each. Damek Tomscha (.301) reached twice when HBP.  Reading batters struck out 12 times, went 0-9 with RISP, and stranded 9 base runners.

Lakewood (86-50) rallied after blowing a 3-2 lead to beat Delmarva, 8-7 in a walk off. Spencer Howard (3.78) scattered 10 hits (9 singles and a double), walked none, benefited from 2 double play balls, and held the Shorebirds to 3 runs, only 2 of which were earned.  Howard also struck out nine batters.  Tyler Fallwell (5.85) allowed 4 runs in his one inning of work.  Luis Cedeno (5-3, 2.91) earned the win with three, no-hit, scoreless innings.

The BlueClaws took a 3-2 lead with a run in the second inning on Madison Stokes’ sac fly, and 2 runs in the fourth on a ground out and a throwing error.  After falling behind 7-3, they fought back with a run in the seventh on Dalton Guthrie’s sac fly (.244); 3 runs in the eight on RBI singles by Nick Maton and Josh Stephen (.247), and Jose Antequera’s (.265) game-tying RBI single; and they walked off with a one-out run in the ninth on Jhailyn Ortiz’ RBI double.

Rodolfo Duran (.260) went 4-5 with 4 runs scored and a double.  Ortiz had 2 hits including 2 doubles and an RBI.  The BlueClaws struck out just four times, drew three walks, and turned 3 double plays.

Williamsport (32-42) beat State College, 7-3.  Ethan Lindow (3-2, 2.19) twirled a six-inning gem.  He held the Spikes to 3 hits and an unearned run.  He walked none and struck out five.  And he threw 60 strikes among his 80 pitches (75%).  Austin Ross (3.34) walked two and struck out six in two no-hit innings.  Jose Jimenez (3.71) gave up 2 runs in the ninth inning.

The Crosscutters collected eight hits.  All the offensive damage was wielded by the 3-4-5-6 hitters.  Alec Bohm had 2 hits, 2 doubles, and 2 runs scored.  Ben Pelletier (.277) had 2 hits, 2 runs scored, and a walk.  Jake Holmes (.253) had 2 hits, 2 runs scored, and 2 RBI.  And, Edwin Rodriguez (.250) had 2 hits, a run scored, a double, HR (3), and 5 RBI.  The Cutters went 5-7 with RISP, and left just 2 men on base.

The GCL Phillies East finished in first place in the GCL North Division with a 30-24 record. They lost a one-game semifinal on the road against the Palm Beach Cardinals.

  • #25 Dominic Pipkin (1-2, 3.64) made 10 appearances, 8 starts.  In limited action, he pitched 29.2 innings.  In a SSS, he posted a 1.180 WHIP, 2.4 BB/9, and 5.5 K/9.

The GCL Phillies West finished in second place in the GCL Northwest Division with a 30-24 (.556) record.

  • #14 Luis Garcia finished the season with a league best .369 AVG.  His .433 OBP placed third, his .488 SLG placed 13th, and his .921 OPS placed seventh.  These were not only team leading but also the best of both Phillies GCL entries.  Garcia’s 33 runs scored were fourth in the league following team mate Yerwin Trejo’s 40.  He led the league with 62 hits.  Placed second with 32 RBI.  Trejo’s 23 stolen bases led the league, Garcia had 12.

The DSL Phillies Red finished the season 31-40 (.437) in fifth place in the DSL South Division.

The DSL Phillies White finished the season 39-33 (.542) in fourth place in the DSL San Pedro Division.

  1. Just because it’s a quiet Sunday, I downloaded the stats of the teams whose seasons are complete. Some of these guys might be called up to LKW but for now they’re done. Sorting by top 10 BAs, Two are 17 yo’s (Luis Garcia, #1 overall and Johan Rojas (from the DSL) and 2 are 21 yo’s (Jack Conley and Yerwin Trejo). Garcia is a top 30 guy and I’ll bet most will put him in the top 10. Rojas should be state-side next year. It should be noted that 18yo Logan O’Hoppe was only .002 behind Garcia for #1 BA and Juan Aparicio was 3rd.

    O’Hoppe, Garcia and Conley finished 1 – 3 for best OPS. All finished above .900

    I wanted to look at who had the most total bases on the year. But the stat didn’t tell me what I wanted to know because the guys in the DSL played 60+ games and the guys in the GCL only 40+. So I created a TB/G on my spreadsheet. Garcia was #1 again. O’Hoppe and Abrahan Gutierrez were 2 and 3. The HR leader was Carlos De La Cruz with 6 and he finished 6th on the TB/G stat. He was also pretty high in BA and OPS.

    My little analysis shows: First, Garcia is bucking for top 5 and O’Hoppe will be hard to keep out of the top 30. Second, De La Cruz is very intriguing and probably will get some discussion during the top 30 polls. Third, there are some guys in the DSL who we’ll want to keep an eye on next year.

    1. Great analysis – I agree with your conclusions. Garcia is a top 5 prospect. I wonder if he goes right to Lakewood next year. It’s more than possible.

  2. JPC…over the last week since his walk-off hit last Saturday….11 hits in 29 ABs……379/437.
    Burning , maybe he has flip the switch.

    1. I’m very curious to see JPC when he is recalled again. I think all of the skills are definitely there. But he needs to be less defensive when he swings. He still needs to be discerning at the plate but when he decides to hit the ball, he needs to go on the attack, not fight off pitches. I still believe in the talent – I’m hoping the lost year leads to a serious off season.

        I can still envision the JPC from July and August last season at LHV where he was an approx 280/375/545 guy in close to 250PAs with 12 HRs, 10 doubles, 4 triples and 33 RBIs…all after making that AAA adjustment from the first half of 2017 and second half of 2016..
        He can still do that at the MLB level…that is, make those adjustments.

  3. Bohm is .289/.357/.447 in his last ten. Good to see him get his stroke back a bit before the season ends. If he skips Lakewood next season, Clearwater is going to have quite the lineup!

    1. Something would seem to be off if a bat-first college player drafted 3rd overall didn’t start in Hi-A. I’m glad he’s started to get his feet under him this year.

      3B has been a sore spot in the org for a long time but there could be a handful of interesting players there next year, with Bohm in Clearwater, Holmes (hopefully) in Lakewood and DJ Stewart probably in W-port. Maybe throw Luke Williams in there too if he moves to Reading.

      1. But it might not happen. My view is, if in doubt, start him at Lakewood. If he’s too good for that level, we will know soon enough. I’d prefer not to see another start like Moniak had this year where, frankly, I think he was not quite ready for that level.

        1. Frankly, I always view half-year stats of recently drafted college players with skepticism. Often guys struggle adjusting to college ball the first half year and then just rake like crazy the next year, and Rhys Hoskins is a recent example. I’m just glad he appears to have made some strides recently.

        2. Yeah, it might not happen but it would be disappointing if so. Bohm wasn’t drafted with the thought that he was raw as a hitter so if he’s not ready for Clearwater that could be a problem.

          I’m usually in the “pay little attention to a college player’s stats in ss-ball” club. I don’t really care about Bohm’s triple slash, just the high ground ball rate. I think it sometimes signifies difficulty adjusting to wood bats. I know he had a good track record with wood bats previously, so maybe he’s just tired or something.

          Hoskins’ underlying numbers were strong, and we had some reports that he was hitting into bad luck. Bohm has been like the Maikel Franco (pre-July) of Williamsport (and the GCL). To be clear, I’m still taking his numbers with a grain of salt or two. I’m just hoping that he puts those concerns to rest early next year.

    1. I don’t want to toot my own horn but pretty damn close to moniak at 275 to finish the year. I bet they give him the day off. Go because 270 looks a lot better than 269! What an accomplishment kid!. Go Threshers in the playoffs and the rest of the teams as well. I enjoy this board a lot. Thanks Jim

      1. No offense, but that would probably be the last reason they would give him a day off. Think about it for a second. Does that make any sense? Giving a player in hi A ball a day off so he can hit .270 and not .269? What difference does that make?

        1. Moniak isn’t in the lineup today. Wouldn’t surprise me if that’s the reason, honestly. One extra game played probably doesn’t mean anything in the long run either but maybe getting to .270 was a goal that he wanted to accomplish. Who knows.

        2. No offense taken! I know it seems like that would be the last thing that they would do but to me personally .270 looks better than .269 for the season. I know it is a minuscule percent but when something is stamped at .270 in books for season and not .269 it looks better especially when going over someone’s career stats.. maybe I am getting at phuture trade bait?! I don’t know. Just my two cents.

      Perhaps get him completely stretched in Sept and part of the FIL, prior to joining the Scorpions in the AFL in October.

    2. Maybe in low leverage situations but I doubt it. The Phillies are really careful when rehabbing pitchers and their caution worked wonders for major leaguers like Nola and Velasquez so I’m trusting their care and judgment.

  6. It seems like Brito made a fairly smooth transition to Hi-A. The numbers aren’t great but still decent, and he’s young for the level. Hopefully it gives him something to build off of when he starts there next season. Remember there was a lot of hype around him in the past and, fwiw, Fangraphs has a 60 FV on his hit tool. He might be stock down from last offseason but not by too much.

I was a little disappointed by the number of hits given up by Howard, but I looked at his last 10 starts and this was the first one in which he gave up more than 4 hits so it makes me a feel a lot better and 9 Ks and 0 BBs in 5 innings works for me. It also makes me feel better 9 of the 10 hits were singles.

  8. Does anyone know what the process is for Leiter being claimed off of waivers byToronto(above)? Do they get him for nada? Do they have to work out a deal?

    1. According to the ruling……..Phillies can arrange a trade with the Jays for Leiter but has to be within two business days of the Jays’ claim; or just do nothing and allow the Jays to assume Mark’s existing contract, pay the Phillies a waiver fee, and place him on their 40.
      Assume the Phillies are doing option two, and just letting him move on without any trade concerns.
