Clearwater Threshers Recap – 6/23/2018

The Clearwater Threshers (35-36) beat Dunedin, 6-5 in ten innings.  Mauricio Llovera (3.88) gave up 3 runs on a hit batter in the first inning.  But after he settled down, Llovera held the Blue Jays hitless through the fifth inning, retiring 14 of 16 batters.  He walked two and struck out seven.

Grant Dyer (2.25) gave up a solo HR in one inning of work.  Pat Neshek pitched a rehab inning, striking out two.  He ended the inning getting some poor Blue Jay waling away at a 62 mph pitch that looked like he was launching a shot put.  Jake Hernandez (3.13) struck out four in his two innings.  Aaron Brown (2-4, 5.35) struck out two in the tenth but the overtime runner scored.

The Threshers chipped away all night.  They took their only lead when they walked off in the tenth.  They scored a run in the second inning on Luke Williams’ line drive, solo HR (6) into the left field bleachers.  They scored again in the fifth on Grenny Cumana’s RBI ground out.  They crept within a run in th sixth on Edgar Cabral’s sacrifice fly after Adam Haseley’s triple.  They tied the game in the eighth on Cumana’s solo HR (1).

The Threshers tied the game in the tenth on Gabriel Lino’s RBI single.  Haseley’s two-out single pushed pinch-runner Brian Mims into scoring position.  Henri Lartigue’s bloop single to left dropped in and Mims crossed the plate well ahead of the throw.

Haseley had 3 hits.  Williams stole his 6th base.

Williams entered this season with 3 career HR, spanning 3 season, 205 games, and 706 AB. He has 4 in his last 10 games (38 AB).

This was the first game all season where Llovera allowed any runs in his first inning. His FB was 92-97 mph.  He sat 95-96 mph through his first four innings.  He throws a SL and CH with his FB and is working on a CB which he threw 3 times last night (for a ball, a called strike, and a ground out to first).  Llovera got most of his Ks with Blue Jays swinging at high, and hard FB.  He got his first 5 on 96, 95, 97, 95, and 96 mph FB.

  1. Efrain Morales of DSL Red looks intriguing. He’s 16 for two more days. He’s pitched 20 innings and 16 of them have come as a starter. In that role, he’s given up 12 hits and 4 ERs. He has 15 Ks to 4 BBs but he’s also hit 3 batters. He’s a 6′ 190 lbs kid who has some time to grow.

  2. Eshelman with a nice start as he tries to reset his season.
Reading needs to upgrade it’s starting staff with arms from Cwater.
    Justin Williams? What’s changed recently?
Lakewood with their 16th shutout, most in baseball this year. Retain and promote that pitching coach who is in his 1st year coaching.
Bohm to Wsport, good news. That lineup will score lots of runs, until some of the college guys are promoted to Lwood

  3. Alex Bohm in Williamsport.
May get a game in at Mahoning 100 miles down the road, but definitely should be ready to play on Thursday vs State College at home.

  4. Eshelman has walked more than one batter in half of his starts this year (7 of 14).

Last season, he never walked more than one batter. (23 starts).

  5. Sounds like Neshek unleashed an eephus on those unsuspecting minor leaguers. I remember a Phillies pitcher throwing a couple a few seasons back (it might have been David Hernandez?) Batters always shake their head in disbelief after is slowly floats in for a strike …

          1. rocco…that may be in 2020.
Hall will need to also still spend time in LHV if he continues to rake..

  6. Luke Williams sure has turned his season around, on June 17th he was at 3 HR’s on the season and a week later he’s now at 7.

  7. That kid might solve the third base problem. I just cant believe how much he improved. Which jim can tell us about him and the difference he sees

    1. rocco,

Jim can give a more informed response than me, but Williams is just 21 and I wonder if he’s grown into some power. He is a solidly looking physical specimen, which I didn’t expect when I saw him recently.

      1. good speed too, only saw him twice this year with Clearwater but saw him a few times with Lakewood and the Crosscutters. Between the GCL, Crosscutters and Lakewood he had only 3 HR in over 700 AB’s.

  8. Nice comeback win by Clearwater, down 5-0 in the 9th. Listened to the 9th while waiting for the Crosscutters game to start, they have really turned their season around after that poor start, back to .500 ball now.

    1. Hope Jim was at the game…it’s so uncommon to have back-to-back walk off wins, but it’s probably never been in a 6-run ninth inning!

  9. Vierling with two more hits again this afternoon.
So far 31 PAs with 14 hits…albeit all singles but for one triple.
He seems to have a knack for contact ability.
Hope he can keep this pace up.

  10. Wow what’s up with Ranger 4 of his last 5 starts are 7 ings with less then 3 runs . 2 more Quality starts he should be moved up. Btw so far he only gave up 2 homeruns in Reading. Wow

    1. Ranger is very good and might deserve a promotion soon but unless Anderson goes to the pen, or someone gets hurt, there are 5 starters there who aren’t moving.
