Box Score Recap

Lehigh Valley lost. Joe DeNato started and Zach Eflin relieved. J.P. Crawford hit his 11th HR.

Reading  won a rain-shortened game.  Tyler Viza pitched well.

Clearwater won.  New guys McKenzie Mills, J.D. Hammer, and Seth McGarry teamed with Trevor Bettencourt for the win.  Cornelius Randolph completed a come back with a 2-run double in the seventh inning.

Lakewood walked off on Daniel Brito’s bases-loaded, 3-run triple.  Mauricio Llovera and Jonathan Hennigan combined to throw a three-hitter.

Williamsport won as Spencer Howard, Connor Seabold, and Damon Jones limited Batavia to one run.

The GCL Phillies swept a double header from the GCL Yankees East as Ethan Lindow, Bailey Cummings, Jakob Hernandez, and Ben Brown combined to pitch a 2-hitter in the first game; and Jhordany Mezquita and Victor Sobil combined to pitch a 2-hitter in the second game.  Cummings made his debut.  D.J. Stewart hit his first professional HR.

I would like to offer an apology to mwbbfan for the response I posted yesterday.  Not only was it rude, it also included faulty data.  However, even with correct data, I would have posted the unwarranted comment.  Mwbbfan is a long-time reader and infrequent commenter, and deserved better.  Once again, I apologize.

Lehigh Valley (67-44)  lost to Rochester, 5-2.

Joe DeNato (5.40) started and pitched two, one-hit innings.  Zach Eflin entered in the third inning and gave up all 5 runs on 9 hits.

J.P. Crawford hit a solo HR (11) in the sixth to get the IronPigs on the board.  They added a run in the eighth on Rhys Hoskins RBI single.

Dylan Cozens had an outfield assist (home).

Tom Eshelman is scheduled to pitch tomorrow.

Jake Thompson is going to be optioned back to Lehigh Valley.

Reading (58-50)  beat Harrisburg, 6-1 in a rain-shortened game.

Tyler Viza (8-7, 5.13) got the win on a night when he might have been able to go 7-8 innings.  Viza allowed one run on 5 hits.  He walked none and struck out four on 59 pitches.

The Phils scored 2 runs in the first to take the lead on Drew Stankiewicz’ 2-run HR (2).  They padded their lead with 4 more runs in the third on Kyle Martin’s 2-run double, a throwing error, and Damek Tomscha’s (.262) RBI single.

Clearwater (59-51)  beat Palm Beach, 3-1.

McKenzie Mills (1.80) pitched 5.0 innings in his first start with the Threshers.  He allowed 5 hits and a run, but walked none and struck out one.  J.D. Hammer (1-0, 0.00) retired the side in order in the sixth inning and qualified for the win.  Trevor Bettencourt (0.90) pitched a scoreless two innings.  Seth McGarry struck out 2 and walked one in a hitless ninth for his 15th save.

After the Cardinals were spotted an early 1-run lead, The Threshers started their come back with a game-tying run in the sixth inning on Derek Campbell’s two-out, RBI single. They took the lead in the seventh on Cornelius Randolph’s two-out, 2-run double.

Mark Laird was back in the line up and leading off.  The Threshers collected 10 hits with every starter but Zach Green getting at least one.  Wilson Garcia and Emmanuel Marrero had 2 hits each.

Lakewood (58-52) beat Hagerstown, 5-4 in a walkoff.

Mauricio Llovera one-hit the Suns for seven innings.  The only 2 runners he allowed scored.  He walked none and struck out five. Yet, he managed to give up 2 unearned runs on HBP-SB-E2T-SF and 2B-PB-SF.  Jonathan Hennigan (1-3, 5.03) gave up 2 runs in two innings but benefited from the BlueClaws rally.

The BlueClaws tied the game with 2 runs in the third inning on Arquimedes Gamboa’s RBI double and a wild pitch.  They entered the ninth inning trailing by 2 runs and loaded the bases with one out on singles by Gregori Rivero, Raul Rivas, and Jesus Alastre.  Daniel Brito cleared the bases with a triple for a walkoff victory.

Hagerstown was held to 3 hits.

I heard thru the rumor mill that a certain 19-year old pitcher has pitched his last game at Lakewood and is headed to the Threshers.  If he stays on his current 6-day cycle, he could pitch as early as Saturday in Palm Beach, Ranger Suarez’s next scheduled start.  Edgar Garcia is scheduled to start on Sunday.

Spencer Howard pitched four shutout innings, striking out four.  Connor Seabold picked up the win with two, one-run innings.  Damon Jones struck out five in three innings while picking up his third save.  (Former Phillies pitcher, Tyler Frohwirth, pitched a shutout inning for Batavia.)

The Crosscutters scored 2 runs on just 5 hits.  They opened the scoring Adam Haseley’s RBI ground out in the first inning.  They extended their lead to 2 runs on Malvin Matos’ RBI force out in the fifth.  The bullpen made the 2 runs hold up.

GCL Phillies (21-11) swept a double header from the GCL Yankees East, 6-1, and 2-0.

Game One:  Ethan Lindow and 3 relievers tossed a two-hitter.  Lindow struck out seven in four innings.  Bailey Cummings gave up a run on a hit, walk, and hit a batter in his first pro appearance.  Jakob Hernandez resurfaced and struck out the side while recording his first professional victory.  Hernandez has struck out 8 of the 9 batters he faced this summer. And, Ben Brown pitched a clean seventh with a strike out.

The Phillies scored 3 runs in the second inning on D.J. Stewart’s first professional HR, a 3-run blast to left center by the righty.  They scored 3 more in the seventh on Ben Pelletier’s 2-run double and Rafael Marchan’s SF.

Game Two:  Jhordany Mezquita and Victor Sobil combined to throw a two-hitter in the second game.  Each pitcher gave up a hit and a walk and struck out a batter per inning. Mezquita, the starter, only went 4 innings so Sobil got the win.

  1. i was going to mention the lakewood site was showing that its going to be a Sixto Saturday Night, but i guess hold off on that thought based on what Jim has posted above.

    could Eflin out of the bullpen be because they might bring him up as a long man in september?

    1. No, Eflin was slated to be the starting pitcher, but with the threat of rain they held him back. They did not want him to start the game pitch an inning or two then have a long rain delay and Eflin not being able to come back and pitch more innings.

  2. Do you know how rare it is for a three run walk off triple? The batter has to get to 3rd before the base runner from 1st touches the plate.

        e scoring rules – 10.06 (f) – state that:

        When a batter ends a game with a safe hit that drives in as many runs as are necessary to put his team in the lead, the official scorer shall credit such batter with only as many bases on his hit as are advanced by the runner who scores the winning run, and then only if the batter runs out his hit for as many bases as are advanced by the runner who scores the winning run.
        Rule 10.06(f) Comment: The official scorer shall apply this rule even when the batter is theoretically entitled to more bases because of being awarded an “automatic” extra-base hit under various provisions of Rules 6.09 and 7.05

  3. Good day for the state-side teams. 6 wins and only 1 loss. The only loss was interrupted by a 2 hr rain delay. I guess that’s why Eflin came on in the 4th inning. He probably wasn’t supposed to pitch yesterday but had to be moved up to finish the game.

    Viza is getting back on track. He’s given up 2 runs in his last 19 IP. 13 Ks to 1 BB over that period. Something changed. Maybe they were asking him to try a new pitch or arm angle or pitch to contact or something like that or maybe he was dinged up and now is back to 100%. What ever it is, welcome back Tyler.

    Llovera is one of those guys the Phils use in LKW that begin the season as a reliever and finish as a starter. There are also guys who do the opposite. Bastardo and Bonilla were used that way. But Llovera has been solid both ways. He could be used as a starter, long reliever, short reliever and who knows maybe a closer. He blew his only save opportunity but as he gets a better feel, who knows?

    Spencer Howard, Ethan Lindow and Jhordany Mezquita, the 2nd, 5th and 8th round picks respectively, pitched very well. Also three of our new acquisitions, Mills, Hammer and McGarry, pitched well too. It was a pretty good day on the pitching farm yesterday.

  5. I was at Lakewood last night and can confirm the rumor regarding Sixto Sanchez being bumped to Clearwater. He came out of the clubhouse after the game, with bag in tow. I asked him, but he didn’t say anything. It appears it’s legit, but not announced yet.

      1. Recently turned 19 YO Sixto Sanchez heading to High A is very impressive.
        Even more impressive … I actually heard Jayson Stark say (on the radio) that he was told if the Phillies had been in a playoff race, they would have consider bringing Sixto up to the big league team and using him out of the bullpen.

  9. The depth of quality pitching throughout A-ball and Rookie is just outstanding. Sixto leads the way but there’s a lot to be optimistic about between strong performances and improvements among those who started the year with us, plus all the ’17 draftees and even the recent trade returns. Last night was just another night that so many have shined! It’s going to be so fun to watch many of them debut from mid-2018 through 2020+.

  11. Have to believe that Sanchez has very few innings left this year thus the organization wants to see briefly how he does at the next level. They may even use him in the bullpen to limit his innings.

    1. he’s at 67 and had read elsewhere that Jordan said at one point they would try to get him to around 110 so one start of six innings the next 4 weekends would only get him over 90. i see Clearwater does finish up labor day weekend so could be 5 weekly starts but still would be under 100.

  12. Ramon Rosso was lighting it up in DSL. RHP is a K machine. Racking up 71 K’s in 50 IP. Was recently promoted to GCL. He is 21, but I’m hoping if he keeps mowing them down he moves through the system quickly. Worth keeping an eye on his progress.
