Box Score Recap

Everybody won last night.

Lehigh Valley won in ten innings, Zach Eflin and the bullpen held Durham to one run.

Reading won, Tyler Viza and the bullpen held Hartford to one run.

Clearwater won, JoJo Romero and the bullpen held Fort Myers to one hit.

Lakewood won, Bailey Falter and Ismael Cabrera shut out Hickory.

Williamsport won, Will Stewart held Mahoning Valley to one earned run, and Jhailyn Ortiz brought the offense.

The GCL Phillies were up 4-0 when their game was suspended in the second inning.

Lehigh Valley (65-42)  beat Durham, 2-1 in ten innings.

Zach Eflin gave up a run in six innings on four hits and two walks.  He struck out seven.  Pat Venditte (3.21) pitched 1.1 innings, and Ricardo finished up and got the win.

The IronPigs scored in the fifth on a wild pitch.  They walked off in the tenth on Scott Kingery’s two-out, RBI single.

Kingery had 4 of the IronPigs 8 hits.  They struck out 12 times but only went 1-4 with RISP.

Reading (56-48)  beat Hartford, 8-1.

Tyler Viza (7-7, 5.29) went seven innings and held the Goats to one run on four hits.  He walked none and struck out six.  Jeff Singer made his Reading debut as a setup man and struck out 2 in one inning.  Victor Arano (4.30) pitched a scoreless ninth.

Reading jumped out to a 5 run lead in the first inning on a wild pitch, a throwing error, Damek Tomscha’s RBI single, Jorge Flores’ SF, and Tyler Viza’s RBI single.  They added a run in the third on Zack Coppola’s RBI ground out.  And two more runs in the fourth on a fielding error.

Tyler Viza had 2 hits.  So did Jiandido Tromp and Tomscha.  Tromp had an outfield assist (second base).

Clearwater (56-49)  beat Fort Myers, 3-0.

JoJo Romero was reunited with his Lakewood battery mate, Edgar Cabral, and tossed a one-hitter over seven innings.  He didn’t allow a base runner until a fifth inning walk, and didn’t allow a hit (that I saw) all night.  However, the official scorer saw things differently and ruled an error by the shortstop as a hit in the sixth inning.

Romero walked 2 and struck out five.  He breezed through the first four innings on 52 pitches and 39 strikes.  He started to lose effectiveness in the fifth when he threw his first 3-ball count.  He had 4 3-ball counts total.  As good as he looked early, Romero pitched behind a lot.  He threw just 14 of 25 first pitch strikes (56%).  On the flip side, he got 21 of 63 strikes swimming (33%).

Romero mixed his pitches well all night.  So well, that I don’t have fastball velocity.  He must have a couple FB, like a 2-seamer and a cutter or splitter.  His velocities were as follows  –

  • 95 MPH – 7
  • 94 MPH – 7
  • 93 MPH – 3
  • 92 MPH – 7
  • 91 MPH – 5
  • 90 MPH – 10
  • 89 MPH – 11
  • all the way down to 79 MPH

Aaron Brown made his Threshers’ pitching debut.  He threw 16 pitches, 10 strikes.  he walked one and struck out two.  His FB was 91-94, but sat mostly 93-94 MPH.

Luke Leftwich struck out the side in the ninth and earned his eighth save.  All three Ks came swinging, the last two at fastballs at 96 and 94 MPH.

Jan Hernandez put the Threshers ahead in the second with a 2-run HR (15).  The Threshers tacked on a run in the seventh on Grenny Cumana’s RBI single.

Hernandez and Cabral each had 2 of the Threshers seven hits.

Bailey Falter pitched great.  He threw seven shutout innings, gave up 3 hits, walked none, and struck out nine.  He needed just 84 pitches.  Ismael Cabrera (3.43) struck out three in two innings while earning his second save.

The BlueClaws scored 2 runs in the first inning on RBI doubles by Darick Hall and Henri Lartigue.

Lartigue had a 2-hit game.  The BlueClaws managed only 4 singles after the first inning.

Will Stewart had a nice night.  He pitched five innings and held the Scrappers to one earned run.  Poor defense helped bring his total runs allowed up to three.  Stewart walked none and struck out six.  Randy Alcantara (2.25) struck out three in two innings.  Luis Ramirez gave up a run in two innings and picked up his fifth save.

The Crosscutters scored four runs in the third on Austin Listi’s RBI ground out, Greg Pickett’s RBI single, and Jhailyn Ortiz’ 2-run HR (7).  They tacked on a run in the fifth on Ortiz’ sacrifice fly.

Pickett and Ortiz had 2 hits each.  Ortiz had 3 RBI.  Nick Maton drew 2 walks.

Williamsport committed 5 errors.

  1. Ortiz is proving to be worth the money, at this point in his career. He’s hitting .300/.423/.620/1.043 as an 18 yo in Wmsprt. He has 9 dbls, a triple, 7 HRs and 24 RBIs in 29 games. He’s tied for 1st, in the league, in HRs and RBIs. The guy he’s tied with in HRs is 21 yo and in RBIs 22 yo. He’s also 1st in Slg% and 3rd in OPS. He’s in the top 7 in the league in most offensive categories. He’s even 3 for 3 in stolen bases. Ortiz was # 15 in our top 30 last December and #11 on my list. He’s solidly in my top 10 with a bullet. He’s still very young and a couple of years away from being in a league where we’ll know if the $4M man will be great.

  2. I would have Ortiz as #3 behind Kingery and Sanchez and ahead of Hoskins due to the 5.5 year age difference. Ortiz is not some big lug. He can field and run and throw. Very impressive kid.

  3. Jay Floyd of PhoulBallz earlier this month interviewed Reading LHP Cole Irvin and asked him a few questions. One of the questions:
    What is the pitch menu for you right now and is any of the offerings a go-to pitch for you?

    “Four-seam, two-seam, one-seam- I haven’t been throwing that here yet, because it’s so unpredictable- but, change up, slider and curve ball. My out pitch is my change up. I can throw it in any count. All my pitches I can throw in any count, but change up, slider, curve ball, those are my out pitches and every once in a while if I know a guy is a free swinger, I’ll throw a fastball up ’cause he’s gonna be able to swing at it. You just gotta understand the situation in terms of kind of what’s going to be an out pitch, especially at this level. Guy are going to start being patient. There is a difference between High A and here with patient hitters, guys not exactly jumping out at the first pitch they see. You know they understand that the might get one more decent pitch to swing at. So, the biggest thing for me is to minimize how many decent pitches they see. (Laughs)”

  4. I very much agree with Jim. The “hit” against Romero was a CLEAR error. Routine hop that went right by the SS’s glove. Would have been cool to say I attended two milb no-hitters in two weeks, but the official scorer had other ideas… Regardless, Romero was very impressive. There were very few balls hit hard against him.

  5. Pujols, Encarnarcion, Gruilion were big $ LA signings who have done next to nothing. Very encouraging results from Ortiz especially when many scouts soured on him prior to his official signing but after the Phils agreed in principle to a deal.

      1. Grullon has a chance of becoming a very good MLB catcher in my opinion.
        Granted he was not a million dollar signing, but at $600K he could be also considered a bargain from that position if he develops into a quality catcher.

  6. I have a lot more faith in our last 3 years of LA signings as a whole and that goes towards this month’s signings as well. We always did admirably with low $ LA players. But we were not able to get the future superstar in those markets. Sixto can be that guy. Kilome is interesting but Sixto is the player I would buy stock in over anyone in our system. Ortiz would be 2nd.

    1. ciada, This is my understanding of Alfaro and his option years.

      Alfaro is in his third and final option year. Alfaro’s 3 options were burned on –

      – March 23, 2015 Texas optioned C Jorge Alfaro to Frisco RoughRiders
      – March 18, 2016 Phillies optioned C Jorge Alfaro to Reading
      – March 17, 2017 Phillies optioned C Jorge Alfaro to Lehigh Valley

      A player can be recalled an optioned any number of times during an option year and it will count as one option for that year (within certain restrictions), but once his third option year is over, a player cannot be optioned again.

      This is Alfaro’s last option year. As long as he is on the 40-man roster, he will not be exposed to the Rule 5 Draft (the number of option years has nothing to do with it). He cannot be optioned to Lehigh Valley or any other affiliate next season. And, It is unlikely that he would be designated for assignment and exposed to the waiver process.

      You may have noticed that back in March, when a player who was on the 40-man roster was sent back to an affiliate, he was optioned –

  8. Alfaro already on 40 man. He cannot be sent to LHV next year without being exposed to waivers where he absolutely will be scooped up. That is why some people say trade Rupp because Alfaro will be on ML roster next year.

    1. And he’ll be on the team next year. The team will try to trade Joseph, Rupp, and Hernandez in the off season but they have little value. However, none will be given away. Hoskins, Kingery and Alfaro look like they’ll be in Philly in ’18. JP is a question mark. That effects the decisions on Galvis and Cesar.

      1. I really do not understand the love for Alfaro. So we will trade one of the two guys in front of him who are clearly better ball players so that he can be the 2nd string catcher and miss the playing time that he sorely needs to get better. I watch Alfaro a lot as most of the home games are televised in my area. He might have the tools, but I don’t see them being exhibited in game time situations.

        1. @jim……if Grullon stays with Reading the remainder of August, and handles himself well and is expected to start there next season, the Phillies would be in a very enviable position with Rupp, Knapp, Alfaro and possibly Grullon all showing signs of being quality MLB catchers.
          If Grullon does well in ’18 at Reading, that may force the Phillies hand and may decide to move Alfaro llo of Rupp.

  12. I guess I missed it yesterday but godspeed to Matt Hockenberry, who I’m pretty sure was the last guy to be drafted from Temple’s baseball program. He isn’t having a good season and probably just didn’t have the stuff to make it in AA and above, but I was rooting for him. I’ve always liked this video of one of his bullpens; I wish more pitchers had videos like this where you can really see what their stuff is like firsthand:

I suppose it is too soon to tell, but I’m wondering if Ortiz can be fast tracked like the Braves have done with Acuna (won’t be 20 until December) and Albies (turned 20 last January) both of whom are in AAA. Don’t want to rush the kid but if he doesn’t have to take one step at a time he shouldn’t.

    1. Besides the fact that the Phillies are not aggressive in promotions, there are a lot of OFs in the Phillies system ahead of him. If you look at the Braves pipeline, their second best OF prospect is #12 and he’s in low A. So clearly, nobody ahead of Acuna.

    2. Another interesting development is that the Braves OF situation are all owed money. None of them are FAs. Inciarte is not going anywhere, Kemp is owed $43.5M and Markakis is owed $11M. Braves are going to have to eat some money to open a spot for Acuna.

Some of those high ranked and profile prospects the Braves rushed thru their system going back some , and had up at 20/21 years old seem to plateau fairly quick…Francoeur, Heyward, Ryan Klesko, Brian Jordan, Tony Tarasco,…of course some went on and prospered like Chipper, Andruw Jones, Brian McCann and Freddie Freeman…..so it can be hit and miss.

      1. One other issue with the Brave’s history of fast-tracking guys to the majors is how many of them left in their age 26/27 season because they were early FA’s. It’s better to be a year late than a year early with a prospect where you are spending a major league service year getting AAA league performance.

          I see all the posters on philly.com. clamoring on bringing all the prospects up right away…then when JPC struggled in April thru parts of June…..he was a bust.

    2. No, I’ve seen his talent. Just some bad luck – hitting hard right at somebody. Also, there really is an adjustment to games every day with only four days off. One of last year’s Wmspt players (I forget who) said in a pre-game interview about the difference between college and pro ball, “In college I had a life.”

The Phillies FO have missed some opportunities the past few years to bring in stud prospects, but I’ve believed there are some diamonds among the great bounty of 2nd & 3rd tier prospects that they’ve accumulated. I think it’s starting to show as some keep trending up to the brink of that 1st tier (studs). Kingery seems prime example. (I don’t buy that he’s not already Top 25 in MILB). Sixto could reach similar status too by next year. And there’s more developing that could outperform (led by Jhailyn).

    1. Chase Utley was only ranked 1 time in the BA top 100 and that was at #81. Jimmy Rollins only got to #31, Ryan Howard #27…

      I know that ranking players is a fun exercise but I put very little stock in them in relationship to how a player will help the team…

      1. The list is endless of MLB quality hitters who never made the BA Top 100.
        That little guy this week playing for the Astros who ripped apart the Phillies, Jose Altuve, never made it and he could be on his way to the HoF with 5/6 more seasons like this year.

  17. Sixto and Ranger are flat out dealing it today!!!!!

    Sixto is thru 5 inn. with a one hitter, only 56 pitches, 42 strikes
    Ranger through 4 inn scoreless with 6 Ks…

    1. he really was superb, wasnt he? only 73 pitches, 54 strikes, essentially a bloop single and the other hit a good third baseman gets to. only a couple hard hit balls. Hall did not look good at all at first base. gun in stadium seemed a tick or two above the scouts sitting in front of us, but at least one 100 reading and alot of 97’s, but it didnt really matter; nobody was really getting around on anything.

      had my son and a friend see Sixto warm up up close, then seats behind home plate. they were in awe. by the way, he just turned 19. a little thicker body than i expected from seeing him on video.

      Moniak started well; line drive single to right center, a well struck sacrifice fly to center, and worked a walk after he crushed a foul homer that one hopped the food shack out past right field. a lefty got him late in the game and then he struck out on a breaking ball with the tying/winning run on second/third to end the game.

      kyle cody was hitting 96/97 frequently and struck out 11 but threw almost 100 pitches and didnt make it through 5.

      russ and hibbs gave it all up in 8th/9th.

      2. Hall really did butcher the balls hit to him. I had to see the much talked about delivery of Sixto Sanchez, and boy, it looked like he was playing catch with Rivero, and you look up at the score board, and he is throwing 99mph, 100mph, with little effort. Amazing.

  20. Not trying to jinx anybody, but … two Phuture Phillies pitchers are currently throwing no hitters. Julian Garcia for Williamsport so far 5 IP, 0 H, 4 BB, 11 K. Harold Arauz for Clearwater 6 IP, 0 H, 0 BB, 9 K.

  21. Everybody here is excited about Ortiz and Haseley in Williamsport. So am I, but there’s one other guy that looks like a real hitter, Greg Pickett. He lost part of his first season in 2015 and all of last season to injury. He’s healthy now, and hitting in the middle of the order at a .324 clip and an OBP of .375. He has power, and he’s only 20 years old. I like this kid. As Whitey used to say, “He looks hitterish.”

      But he does have some pop in his bat.
