Box Score Recap

Lehigh Valley won by shutout, Crawford hit 2 home runs.

Reading lost by shutout.  Jerad Eickhoff made a successful rehab start.

Clearwater won by a 3-hit shutout.

Lakewood won, holding the opposition to a single run.

Williamsport  won with a late rally.

The GCL Phillies won on an Edwin Rodriguez walk off HR.  Zach Eflin had a successful rehab start.

Lots of good pitching performances Tuesday.

And, lots of player movement among the affiliates – 18 level assignments, 1 rehab assignment, 4 signings, 1 DL assignment, and 1 release.

Lehigh Valley (53-32) beat Syracuse, 8-0.

Tom Eshelman (7-2, 1.96) combined with the bullpen on a 9-hit shutout.  He pitched 7.0 innings and allowed 6 hits and a walk.  He struck out four.  Jesen Therrien (2.04) gave up 2 hits and a walk while striking out 2 in an inning of relief.  Edubray Ramos (0.00) allowed a hit and walk in one inning.

The IronPigs scored in the first inning on Jorge Alfaro’s RBI double and Dylan Cozens’ 2-run HR (19).  They scored on 2-run HRs by J.P. Crawford (5) in the fifth and seventh innings, and on an Herlis Rodriguez’ RBI single in the sixth.

Scott Kingery (.361) went 4-5 with a double.  Crawford (.216) went 2-5 with 2 HR (5) and 4 RBI (32).  Alfaro (.256) and Pedro Florimon (.301) had 2 hits each.  Cozens’ 2 RBI raised his total to 53.

Reading (50-31) lost to Trenton, 2-0.

In a rehab assignment, Jerad Eickhoff (0-1, 1.80) pitched 5 innings striking out five.  He allowed one run on 2 hits and a walk.  The run scored on a solo HR.  Alexis Rivero (3.45) pitched a scoreless inning.  Yacksel Rios (1.95) gave up an unearned run in 1.0 inning. Alberto Tirado made his AA debut and pitched a scoreless, 2-hit inning.

The Phils collected 9 singles.  Carlos Tocci (.314) had 3 hits.  Angelo mora (.305) and Zack Coppola (.299) had 2 hits each.  Cord Sandberg went 1-4 in his AA debut.

Clearwater (44-37) beat Daytona, 5-0.

The enigma with a high-80s fastball who is Harold Arauz (3-0, 1.15) combined with Luke Leftwich (3.26) for a 3-hit shutout.  Arauz gave up 3 hits in 6.0 innings while walking none and striking out three.  Leftwich pitched 3.0 no-hit innings for his 7th save.

Mark Laird (.285) had 2 hits and 2 RBI.  Zach Green had a hit and a walk.  Wilson Garcia (.265) had 2 hits.  Cornelius Randolph (.240) had 2 hits, 2 doubles, and a SB (6th, 3rd base). Carlos Duran played RF and went 1-4 in his first game after his promotion from Lakewood. “Where in the world is Jose Pujols?”

Lakewood (45-38) beat Delmarva, 3-1.

Bailey Falter (4-5, 3.24) gave up one run in 6.0 innings on 6 hits and no walks.  He struck out six.  Felix Paulino (6.06) was yanked after 0.1 inning and a hit and 2 walks.  Ismael Cabrera (3.71) stranded 3 inherited runners and struck out 2 in 1.2 innings.  Jonathan Hennigan (4.66) earned his 3rd save with 2 hits and 2 strike outs.

Daniel Brito (.252), Henri Lartigue (.267), and Luke Williams (.227) each went 2-4 with an RBI.  Lartigue had the BlueClaws lone XBH, a double.  Raul Rivas (.281) had 2 hits in his return to Lakewood.  Juan Luis went 1-4 in his Low A debut.

Mickey Moniak (.270) went 1-4 with a run scored and his 8th stolen base.  Rivas, Williams, and Brito were also successful stealing bases.

Bailey Falter picked a runner off first base.

Williamsport (7-8) beat State College, 4-2.

Julian Garcia (2-1, 1.50) pitched 7.0, 3-hit innings.  He gave up 2 runs on 3 hits and a walk while striking out eight.  Zach Warren struck out 2 in 1.0 inning.  Luis Ramirez (2.16) earned his first save.

The Crosscutters finally broke through with 3 runs in the seventh inning on Josh Stephen’s 2-out, 2-run double.  He scored on Rodolfo Duran’s RBI double.  They tacked on a run in the eighth on Jhailyn Ortiz’ RBI double.

Adam Haseley (.421) had 2 hits and 2 runs scored.  Jhailyn Ortiz (.270) went 2-3 with a run scored, double, RBI, and 5th HBP of the season (in 10 games).

Josh Stephen (.245) went 1-3 with a run scored, double, 2 RBI (8), and walk.

GCL Phillies (4-4) beat the GCL Braves, 5-4 in 9th inning walk off.

Zach Eflin made a rehab start.  He pitched 4.0 innings and gave up one run on 3 hits.  He walked none and struck out three.  His FB was 93-95, touching 96 MPH.  He expects to head for Lehigh Valley for his next start.  Sandro Rivero (5.40) pitched 4.0 innings and gave up a run on 6 hits and a walk while striking out three.

The Phillies had carried a 2-run lead into the ninth inning.  Jesus De Los Santos (6.00) loaded the bases on 2 hits and a walk before giving way to Sati Santa Cruz with 2 outs. Santa Cruz walked in 2 runs before getting the final out.

Brayan Gonzalez gave Eflin a 2-0 lead on a 2-run single in the first inning.  They added a run in the second on Jonathan Guzman’s RBI single.  After the Braves scored a run off Eflin, the Phillies got the run back in the bottom of the fourth on Keudy Bocio’s SF.

After the Braves tied the game in the ninth, Edwin Rodriguez led off the bottom of the inning with a walk off HR (1) to right field.  He crushed it.

Rodriguez (.200) had 2 hits including the game winning HR.  Kevin Markham got his first professional hit.  Simon Muzziotti (.333), Jonathan Guzman (.308), and Gonzalez (.348) each went 1-4.

Generally a good day for the entire farm system, Reading’s loss notwithstanding (Eickhoff had a wonderful rehab outing). Let’s hope the prospects continue to push their way upwards as we enter the second half of the MLB season. As always Jim, thanks for the effort.

    I believe that I read a story earlier this week, that they want to have him and Moniak in separate teams so both can Play CF every day. Moniak doesn’t look like he is ready for Clearwater to me, so they will either have Haseley leapfrog him or they will keep both on their teams as of right now.

  4. Ramon Rosso, on DSL White, is 4 – 0 with a .59 ERA, giving up 23 hits in 30+ innings. He has 40 Ks to 8 BBs. His downside is he’s already 21. Is it a case of older guy beating up on very young competition? Very likely. It also could be bigger guy (6’4″ 215 lbs) beating the crap out of little guys. This is his first season with stats or so his profile says. He was signed by the Dodgers in 2015 and released in 2016. Phillies signed him and maybe tweaked something to make him very good. Then again, it might just be a 21 yo beating the hell out of 17 year olds?

  5. Just saw the replay of one of JP Crawford’s homers. Wow. That was a different swing from the very tentative defensive hacks he took earlier in the year. He may have gone through an essential transition this year. His upside is still enormous.

    2. Phillies SS J.P. Crawford, Triple-A Lehigh Valley, No. 4 overall: To be honest, Crawford probably wouldn’t have made this list prior to Tuesday. Sure, he was in great need of a second-half improvement, entering that day with a .212 average and .631 OPS over 70 games. (He hit .244 with a .647 OPS in 87 Triple-A games last year.) But the evidence for a turnaround wasn’t there — no BABIP markers, no significant month-to-month improvements. Then all he did was hit two homers in a game for the first time since Aug. 24, 2014. Of course, let’s not get too wrapped up in a single day’s performance, but it did strengthen Crawford’s case for being a prospect to watch in the second half. Since returning from a groin injury on June 20, he is 17-for-58 (.293) with three homers, two triples and five doubles in 15 contests. His 10 extra-base hits are tied for second in the International League over that span while sporting a nearly even 9/8 K/BB ratio. Again, this run may be too small of a sample, and Crawford could turn back into a Triple-A pumpkin at the plate one of these nights. But to show that he truly has potential with the bat at this level, he needed to grab some attention in a big way, and he accomplished that. At the very least, the 22-year-old shortstop reminded us he’s still one to keep an eye on.

  8. Rumor has it that the enigmatic Arauz doesn’t even have a hight 80s bf, but a cutter that he consistently throws for strike and with a ton of movement, combine with a 12-6 cb and a slider. Someone please confirm this rumor. I just can´t swallow that a high 80s fb guy holds a 1.15 ERA in high A ball. Do we have a Koji Uehara or a Marco Estrada in the making here?

    2. Jim’s probably seen him a few times in CLW. I think he'[s been unimpressed with his FB but his secondary stuff allows him to sneak away from danger. It works until it stops working. He should rise to his level of incompetence. That may be AA. It might be AAA or maybe he’s that guy who deceptively gets away with great secondaries and a sneaky fastball. Certainly if you were placing odds on it, you might say 5% or less he’s successful in the show. But what are the odds of any player in A+ being successful in the big leagues? Probably 5% or less.

      2. Jonathan Arauz came off the restricted list on May 31st. He’s hitting .250 in 27 games since in full season A ball for Quad Cities (a level equal to Lakewood).

  12. Haseley and Moniak will need to be on same field eventually. Put one in LF. Moniak has held his own as a 19 year old and deserves a new starting assignment next year. That or double jump Haseley next year to AA

  13. Calling all JPC haters? After a few good games? The concern and criticism was justified,he was struggling with hitting,sure he was still getting walks,etc. I was concerned that he was to defensive “looking for walks?
    Hopefully this is the start of an improved JPC and he can be one of the better overall shortstops for the next ten years!

  16. I jokingly wrote couple days ago that Ranger Suarez performance was statement of ‘what about me?’ after Romero was promoted to Clearwater, and now he is too! Excited to see what these two Leftys can do there.

    Tirado and Sandberg to AA. I love that they’re being pushed/challenged at this point. FO basically taking off training wheels and saying, Prove you deserve protection on 40-man! C’mon boys, Step up!

    Eshelman continues to impress with his #5 stuff. Who knows…..
    Kingery is killing it, that’s what a #1 prospect looks like. He’s got to be top 50 overall in next ranking. Cozens keeps getting overlooked because his average is low and Ks are high but take out April and his numbers are actually very good. I think August and Sept in Philly could be fun with lots of call ups. Phils manager even acknowledged that the lineup in August could look very different than today.

      1. Has anyone seen Gallo numbers? I mean sure we are hoping for better and if you at cozens swing compared to gallo it’s a better swing. Less effort, shorter, and more hands. Gallo has 21 homers hitting 190!!! Cozens surely can and will do better but to think he will be more than a 230-340 hitter is wishful….but I’m ok with it. He will hit 30 hr imo

  18. I’m curious to see the midseason top 100 lists. Kingery will be on there but curious to see how high. Same with Sanchez and Hoskins. With Williams return after his first half? I expect maybe an Alfaro drop. Will Cozens make an appearance? BA not great but I think it’s actually better than many expected it to be in AAA and power has continued.

    Gallo was a top ten prospect. You would think that Cozens should at least be in the top 100

  20. I’d hate to see Joseph traded prior to seeing what Hoskins can do in majors but I do feel that his hitting will translate just well to majors. So the risk of trading Joseph to allow room for Hoskins who is not on 40 man roster is minimal. And Hoskins is the most deserving for a promotion. Crawford and Kingery will likely stay together in AAA all year and not get called up unless enough 40 man roster spots are freed up in July and August. There is no rush to bring them up but we could legitimately see 3/4’s of the infield as rookies next year from the start in the majors.

    1. Bob, I agree with you about Joseph/Hoskins. This is a problem since neither one is remotely capable of playing another position. An AL team could rotate them between 1B and DH.

      The Phillies could bring up Hoskins and rotate him with Joseph on a strict three game on/off schedule no matter the pitching match up. At least they would then have a minimal idea of what Hoskins can do against major league pitching. This is not ideal but trading Joseph without seeing what Hoskins can do against legit major league pitching has risks.

      BTW, I discount a lot of September stats because a lot of the pitchers and hitters are September call ups and that tends to pad stats and not give a true idea of what a guy can do against real major league pitching and hitting.

    2. I have a hard time seeing ToJo fetching enough to make a trade worthwhile this month. Maybe, he can be included in a multi-player deal (in the offseason) to improve a return.

        1. Jim … any injury news on Rafael Marchan ? I was looking forward to seeing him do well in the GCL after a nice debut in the DSL in 2016. He’s only played in one game this year (2 AB’s) and that was over a week ago.

  25. Several thoughts –

    First, placement on a rookie roster doesn’t necessarily mean what you think it means. There is a 35 player limit on both the Williamsport and GCL rosters. On game day, 25 players are designated as active. Those transactions are not reported to the league office for publication to us.

    Second, a player on a roster does not necessarily have to be in that city. It is far more likely that Gowdy remains in Clearwater to continue his rehab where there are far more support people on hand than there are in WPT. I’ll know tomorrow if he is still in Clearwater.

    Third, WPT’s roster was well below the 35 man limit. So, some players (like Gowdy, I believe) were moved to it so that recently players could be added to the GCL roster, where they are more likely to see playing time. A continuation of the paper moves that the thye affiliates used earlier when they assigned players to XST, WPT, or GCL.

    Nth, available innings aren’t an issue. Some of the pitchers on the WPT roster might not throw a pitch while on it. HS pitchers left on the GCL roster are unlikely to get many opportunities. Last year in the GCL, the 5 main starters were the only pitchers over 40 innings – Sanchez (54), Llovera (53), Fanti (51.2), Stewart (44.1), and Carrasco (41.1). Others were limited too – Young (27), Nunez (20.1), Brown (19.2), Kurokawa (19.1), Nin (17.2), Frohwirth (17.1), Alcantara (16.1), Luis Gonzalez (14.1), Ortiz (13.2), Fultz (13.2), Miller (13.1), Gowdy (9.0), Oskerlly Sanchez (7.0). In WPT, pitchers may see their roles changed or be shutdown completely depending on their college workload. (e.g. Bettencourt was shut down after 2 appearances in 2016).

    Nth+1, the recent draft picks have be indoctrinated to baseball being a job with a daily routine that is very different than what they followed in HS and college. This is as important as innings pitched.

    1. Jim, this is exactly why I have been advocating for a second GCL team. No matter how you word it and no matter how many “paper” transactions there are, there are way too many players chasing too few available innings and ABs. Just within the past week you have had players like Zach Green, Zach Eflin, and Derek Tomscha rehabbing in the GCL and rob young kids of innings and ABs. The Phillies can afford a second GCL team at the complex.
